I have fished the Kennet for many years at Aldermaston Mill and i remember the best nights when i had a 13lb and a 14lb 4oz barbel. I have also had 33lb of fish across 3 fish ie all over 10lb. However about 5 years ago i blanked for 2 seasons and did not even see a barbel let alone get a bite. All i caught was a red signal crayfish - the American invader! So what has happened to the barbel fishing there?
I have spoken to a couple of friends who have also blanked there on many nights. We are all seasoned barbel anglers and have given up on the venue for a few years now. Is anyone catching any barbel or are we all trying in vain because something has happened to the fish stocks? It certainly fished as if were barren! Please post what you are catching so we can all see that barbel still exist in the Kennet. And with a fish farm just above Aldermaston Mill don't tell me the fish have gone off of pellet as that is what the fish farm uses and traces of what they feed, makes it's way into the Kennnet - so pellet is in their diet though we also roll meat on the bottom which used to be deadly - now nothing seems to work??? As for the RDAA's reccomendation that the barbel fishing is good on maggot early season - well i don't travel 100miles to catch tidlers, which is what one usually gets with maggot. Ok for the kids but for serious barbel anglers it's pants - the small one's that is.
