How would have the late 1930s and early 1940s turned out if Japan could source plentiful amounts of oil domestically (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and waters around them)? Would Japan have not invaded South East Asia (at least initially) or do you think they still would have, and if so how would their plans against the US have changed?
How do you think the Atlantic/Mediterranean naval theatre would’ve gone down if some how ignoring logic the axis got its hands on the entire french navy (ignoring fuel restrictions)
Is it possible to transport dismantled battleship size turrets by sea and/or land, if not then could vital stuff of a turret be transported. And why Germans didn't asked Italians for the blue prints and vital equipment of triple 15" guns in order to create their own 15" triple and thus making somewhat more efficient Bismarck class?
Battle of Samar(more specifically Taffy 3), if Kurita had pressed his attack instead of turning away; what, if any, effects would it have had on the Pacific War as a whole?
You haven occasionally referred to a ships guns being good or bad; what makes them this way? Is it the construction materials? Techniques? Linings? Twist rate? Maintenance schedules? What separates a good main gun from a bad on? Also, how were fixed torpedo tubes on capital ships employed? It seems somewhat inconvenient to move a whole battleship just to aim torpedoes
Anyway, even though I like your optimism about the future income, I have just upgraded my pledge level on the Patreon. Not because I really need more options, but just to support you.
Together with Ian of Forgotten Weapons Drach has the best voice of any channel I follow. Both are pleasure to listen to, particularly as some one who is not a native speaker of English.
I mean it wouldn't be my favourite sponsor.... one of the educational channels would surely be better, but I'd happily put up with Raid Shadow Legends if thats what it takes! And I mean the company has a sense of humour, they let you do pretty much what you want as long as certain terms get in there! They pretty much paid for the IVF of a creator I follow (count dankula), and let him have a ball messing around with the format. Internet historian had a good time with RSL and with Nord too, the Nord ads were hilarious 😆
RSL might not be a very good game and it's certainly not a genre I'm in the market for, but they spend their marketing budget in a way that supports individual creators and I approve of them for that.
Here in the US, the end of year holidays seem to be a favored time to cut staff. After months of assuring everyone in my department we were all "vital parts of the organization", management called an "all hands" meeting for the department in mid December to tell us we were all on the street New Year's Eve.
I did indeed listen to the end to find out your news. Best wishes as you navigate the changes. Everyone: if you have the means and you haven't yet, subscribe at Patreon and support Drach!
Surely, Drach, you could shop a resume around the US Navy or Royal Navy to develop content for their public websites or academies showing them what you do on a shoestring budget and what you would be capable of either as a fulltime employee or on a contractual basis?
As someone who has greatly enjoyed your content and never minds even the longest drydocks, I believe that you deserve to personally benefit from the work you do for the channel. I'm happy if my viewership can improve your life and appreciate all the work you put into your material and your commitment to integrity and the use of funds to further the channel itself!
Drach you’re an amazing guy and an inspiration to many. I am very sorry to hear about your job. My hope is that this turns into an opportunity for you, and you will come out with circumstances that are even better than before.
That final bit of news is a good reminder to everyone to actually let the ads play on any channel where you care about supporting the creator. Drach if you put a nice several minute ad at the very end of videos I’m sure a number of viewers will happily lower the volume and let it play through as they bask in the naval history afterglow.
While I won't lie in saying that getting more channel content sounds great, I do wish you all the best and good luck in your future career, even if that means less channel update if say you get say a super job that takes more of your free time.
Found the channel and listen every night, job scenes tough but you got a lot of loyal fans and you're a smart guy, don't think you'll have any problems mate
Having a job end under you or being forced to leave work you like is a gut-wrenching experience no matter how it happens. I’ve had it happen a fair amount as an academic and consultant, and it always makes you doubt yourself no matter the circumstances. I hear that uncertainty pretty plainly through your comments at the end of this Drydock. There’s no reason to apologize. If you put half the successful effort into your “day job” that you do into the channel - and it’s obvious you did - you were a very good employee. You have every right to draw a reasonable living from the amount of work you do for this “hobby” if you can. The Channel hurts when you do.
Big ups for the last few years of work that you have put in for the channel/community and how you can now sustain yourself without a day job. Truly impressive stuff Don't feel bad for pushing a few sponsors here and there 👍
Sorry to hear about the loss of your job. I spent 40 years in the US domestic oil business as a geologist, and got sent away 5 or 6 times, was recalled twice, and ended up being a full time consultant for roughly the past 20 years. On the whole, I think I came out economically ahead of most of my peers who remained in a non-consulting position. Although there were some fairly dismal moments... In an interesting turn of events, I ended up retiring from the oil business and becoming the Chief (Brigade Commander to you) of our local rural fire department. Thanks for all the wonderful history, both well researched and well presented. Good luck with the job thing, and have a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.
37:50 To add another example, I know in "Neptune's Inferno" it's noted that, onboard USS San Francisco during the first Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Admiral Callaghan and Captain Young were on the bridge, XO Hubbard was in the aft control tower, and damage control officer Schonland (3rd in command) was in the conning tower. That's 3 different, fairly well spread out locations used, all of which with the ability to control the ship if necessary; none in the gun turrets though, so I wonder if that's more a British thing, maybe British ships had fewer backup control stations than US ships? (Also, good luck Drach on your new circumstances, we're all rooting for you)
I dont think that's quite correct. Richard Franks states that Schonland, as the damage control officer, was belowdecks at the damage control station and fully occupied (at the time various hits killed the more senior officers) with keeping the ship afloat and right side up. He kept this work up and left the conn in the hands of Lt. Commander Bruce McCandles in the pilot house.
@@kemarisite Ah, yeah, you are correct. I was going off memory, but upon further review, he was indeed at Central Station, he only had control transferred to the conning tower. I must have misread it the first time as him being in the conning tower at the time, and that affected my recall, my bad (and now that I think about it, that makes more sense anyways). Point still stands though, he wasn't in a gun turret.
I can't imagine how you found the time to do everything you already did on the channel. The concept of you having even more time for this is almost a little scary. But I look forward to (post-lockdowns) even more on-site filmed specials
Fantastic video as always sir. Thank you for answering my question. I can see if they ever did a controlled demolition on the SS Montgomery. Drach would be on the closest beach, observing 2,000lb bombs and bits of ship hurtling through the air, live streaming all the while. It would be the greatest video to ever hit TH-cam. I bet Drach and Mrs Drach are just happy that the shed, greenhouse and sitting room are out of range of any possible damage from random debris. Even though some months may be better than others on TH-cam, your followers will doubtlessly still hang on your every word (even when you ramble)! Best always from The States!
Yes Drach, i really like you voice, and especially you sense of humor ;) . There is a reason why i follow you channel for couple of years now ;) Best Wishes from 3city in Northern Poland
Interesting news on work. I will indeed jump in and help you as soon as you get things settled. I particularly love the Rum Rations but everything else is also top notch. So keep us posted so we can join.
I was a bit surprised to hear about your forthcoming availability! I was a highway engineer in uk and overseas, later an auditor for TfL, and various other stuff including project review. (I retired in October 2020) I can appreciate the feelings you expressed. I couldn't help thinking after watching a lot of your videos how transferable your analytical and communication skills would be to project reviewer. So good luck.
Good luck Drach! Great episode. All of my contemporaries from school are retiring but I have to hang in there at least 5 more years due to responsibilities. I know it is odd to say this during this crazy time in the world, but you have one huge advantage over many people. If and when you do finally call an end to your "day job" you already have something that you enjoy and will keep you occupied mentally and physically. A friend told me "don't just retire, retire to something - otherwise there will be a huge hole in your day."
I am sorry to hear about the bad news about your job. I am one of your Patreon supporters and, like lots of others, we are here to support you and your great work. All the best to you and your family.
Drach, keep up with the amazing work! Do yourself a favor and find a job in a naval museum of any kind! Double the pleasure, double the fun. You are by far the best naval historian out there! No competition what so ever.
More quality Drach content would always be welcome. Just take care of yourself and family first and we will be here to watch and listen to your great videos whenever they come out.
Best of luck on the job situation, I’ve just been through it myself. Regarding the SS Richard Montgomery, you can almost hear Drach craning around to look towards the wreck.
I can't imagine what you are going through right now, not the type of news one hopes for, especially so close to the holidays. Best of luck to you and the mrs.
Drach, best of luck in your future endeavours. You are a top tier contributor in a culture not so top tier. I will carry a stick to keep you honest on the mid video ads.
Sorry to hear about your job drach :(. Don't burn yourself out with the channel though. And thanks for keeping mid video ads out, makes my blood boil every time I get one of those! Cheers!
Sometimes bad news is good news. Good luck in the upcoming year. Your success is our success because I love your content and I'd love even more of it too!
Im sorry to hear about your job but I'm happy to hear you will put a little more time to the channel, I love your dedication to history as it gives me more to think about during my everyday to day life as all I do is think about ships, tanks and planes all day
Drach - me personaly dont have ANY objections if you take sponsorships or adds. Everyone needs to make money for their work. You are SUPERB at what you do.
Losing your job sucks, even if it is a job you're not thrilled with. Sorry to hear it, but here's to a safe landing, Drach! And taking care of yourself is taking care of the channel too.
Good luck to you and yours Drach! It's bound to be an anxious period for you up to mid Feb but...if you're able to consult or work p/time whilst growing the channel that would be quite the result! We'll all be here cheering you on! Very best wishes, Mark.
Another limitation to WWII aircraft on a modern carrier: The crews. It might be possible to store 4-5 times as many wartime aircraft in the same hangar space, but the pilots/gunners/etc would probably complain. Their numbers would also go up even faster than the number of planes, since dive bombers, torpedo bombers, and especially larger aircraft like medium bombers all have at least two crewmembers, while current combat aircraft are mostly single seaters. The number of maintenance personnel, ordnance crew, aircraft handlers, etc. would obviously have to go up as well, and so on. I suspect running out of space for people would become a problem even before the number of aircraft becomes unmanageable.
I'm extremely glad to hear, after all of the covid horror stories, that losing the day job isn't going to put you under. Your content is amazing and you do great work! If I ever get ahead of the financial curve I'll be sure to get some your way because I used this channel to psychologically survive covid. Thank you for your hard work
Never mind the power and configuration of the propellers, for a sense of scale, just look at the human beings near the propellers in the naval dockyard. This puts things into perspective.
Battle cruiser doesn't fit with the song I know it's not quite top tier but I propose ' I want an Admiral Hiper for Christmas. Only an Admiral Hiper will do...... I can see me on Christmas morning Creeping down the stairs Oh what joy and surprise When I open up my eyes And see my Hiper hero sitting there. "
hopefully you will have little trouble getting an appropriate and financially sound job. Let that be your first priority for the immediate future and thank you greatly for continually finding ways to make your videos. Your channel is the one that i absolutely can not do without and i am sure many many others share that sentiment.......
All the very best for the future. I agree about the joys of working from home. I've been doing it for over eighteen months now and the only thing I miss is the chats at the tea machine with the young ladies from the other offices on our floor

Hi Drach, i did already sign up to your patreon a while ago. I very much enjoy your work and am very glad you are doing it. Its sad to hear about your job being "deleted". It is frankly astonishing how much content you put out already. I am however a littel worried that you are drving yourself to hard. Doing 3 hrs of patreon drydock. Normal Drydocks, Guides, Wednesday specials etc. on a regular basis cant be easy. So please dont pressure yourself into doing even more. Its important to sometimes take a step back and relax a bit. Regarding the channel money i would not mind if my money goes towards keeping your two faucets watered. You are working hard for that money and you creat a whole lot of joy for others. Stay healthy and merry Christmas
Cruiser killers were a good idea. Battle cruisers were a bad idea. The temptation to throw them into the line of battle where they didn't belong was just to strong.
A bigger problem would be the strategic cost issue. You’re building a capital ship to kill subcapitals and the subcapitals will always have a strategic advantage there.
Drach, ramble listened to right on to the end! All the best as you move into this next chapter, and know that you are held in high esteem by many. Now I must away to become a Patreon supporter because I do in truth owe you for reams of information I would not otherwise have gleaned on my own. I truly considered myself something of a 20th century naval history authority as amateurs go, but your erudition puts me to shame, my friend! Let the archivists tremble at the coming assault!
Just a side note. The captain of the new Ford was a childhood friend and we as a town and all old friends couldn't be more proud. J.J. Cummings . Good old Massachusetts blood.
Drach, contact SpaceX & Cameron County (TX) are going to need someone who can design roads that can deal with 300 t (dry mass) spaceships. The ones they have are already stretched to the limit with the 120 t (dry mass) spacecraft they’ve been dealing with. You could really be a lifesaver there.
Oh yes! I look forward to 'RAID: SHADOW Drach!' jk. Sorry to hear you losing ya job, but I know you will be fine. I didnt realise how close you lived either. I just figured you were proper southern being so well spoken. Im in Essex so it was nice to hear about Montgomery, I reckon they could detonate it if they taped all the windows up in Essex and Kent. Also like the new jingles and intro.
Best wishes Drach your channel is great glad to hear I can look forward too seeing you...... Put them midroll adds in everytime make that money you deserve every penny
I'm sad to hear of you losing the day job, but I sense you will be perfectly capable of charting a new course. At 59 I've known many who had change thrust onto them and did well. You have a dedicated fan here (you're always first on the my home page of videos) and you should know you got me back into ship modelleing!!!
Goodspeed in your Life Sir, i changed (on my own Choice) my Workspace this year and will start on January a new Job. And to be warned i got a Cobi Warspite and might search you when you start midroll Add's. (Just kidding, don't want to commit murder)
Catching up in 2021 as I fell behind over the festive period. Sorry to hear about the job front, glad to hear the channel is doing well enough to reduce the stress related to redundancy, it's a fairly major d**k move to announce the consultancy period right before the Christmas period!! I personally don't mind mid-roll ads when the video is designed for them (ie a break is built in), it's annoying when an ad interrupts midsentence but I appreciate the principle and the channel-relevant sponsors is, to me, FAR more important. Right, onto the next Drydock. Pretty sure the Jan Patreon edition will have to wait until tomorrow, but it means I get Drydock-accompanied working for at least two days, which means happy times.

Sorry to hear about the job situation Drach, I'm in a similar if less immediate situation. My employer, Manchester City Council, has told me that as I'm over 55 I'm in scope for Voluntary Efficiency Retirement. Basically bugger off, and you can have what your pension would be worth at normal retirement age now. I'm still doing the sums, it's a bit of a mind f*ck. Best of luck.

Sorry to hear about your day job, Drach. You'll get another day job. Stay strong.
Good luck Drach, we're with you!
Hi Drach, thanks for answering my question. More important, thanks for your great content. I wish you the best of luck on the dayjob front.
Sometimes bad news is good news. Good luck in the upcoming year. Your success is our success because I love your content and I'd love even more of it too!
Yes I've been reading about Croydon Council, they certainly took over the Asylum there Drach, Good Luck 👍👍
Im sorry to hear about your job but I'm happy to hear you will put a little more time to the channel, I love your dedication to history as it gives me more to think about during my everyday to day life as all I do is think about ships, tanks and planes all day
Thank you, Drachinifel.
Good luck, mate! Long may Castle Drach stand, with fair winds and following seas.
Top man Drac, good luck whatever you decide on the job front but fantastic news for us subscribers more content from the best channel on TH-cam !
I'm so early Beattie hasn't messed anything up yet.
Shore leave! *cracks open a Taddy Porter and a bag of hard pretzel chunks* I've waited all week for tonight! =)
The future is what we make of it... Lets make it awesome!
Wild I live in Croydon too!
Camping out in the archives! I love it!
All support, all times
Thanks again, my fraind
Best thing about a dry dock on a sunday is been able to listen to it while making a roast dinner
Sunday is such a great day for the drydock, perfect to watch during the cooking of and the washing up of the Sunday Lunch!
Cool - Battlecruiser vid by the man. Somehting to really look forwar to. All I want for Christmas is a battlecruiser vid etc.
Battle cruiser doesn't fit with the song I know it's not quite top tier but I propose
' I want an Admiral Hiper for Christmas. Only an Admiral Hiper will do......
I can see me on Christmas morning
Creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and surprise
When I open up my eyes
And see my Hiper hero sitting there. "
Red Green:
Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together.
very true. We fight til the end
(brian B) Guest of the RN. The first and finest sea training I have have ever known. Thank God for the RN.
hopefully you will have little trouble getting an appropriate and financially sound job.
Signing up on patreon to help pull the weight! Keep up the great work, we all love your content
Best of Luck for you Sir! And yes your voice is very enjoyable.
Wish you the best of luck in the future!
Sorry to hear about your job. But I am really happy you can spend more time on the Channel.
I love your content and your voice! I hope your TH-cam career flourishes!
Thanks for keeping mid stream adds out of your videos!!!!
Good luck with the channel. Looking forward to more content.
Perhaps a segment on the mini flat top on the Great Lake ( USS Wolverines) to teach pilots to land on flat tops
Your calm voice helped me through a horror year at Work and the Add Free Content was very good. Thanks for your grandios work. And to be warned i got a Cobi Warspite and might search you when you start midroll Add's. (Just kidding, don't want to commit murder)
At around 15 minutes, during the props and rudders question...just under the rudder in the picture is the me gusta meme face. I can't unsee it.
Good luck with everything drach! We all wish the best!
Drachinifel on a Sunday goes a long way to making up for the baby waking up at 0 dark 30.
"this episode is brought to you by raid shadow legends"
Glad I joined up on Patreon to help out.
Admiral TIberious: Do you think the Richard Montgomery is still dangerous?
Drachinifel: Answers question from underneath the table.
Being under the table will be no good, it's submerged so will create a tsunami. He needs to stand on the table.
@@thomas316 Problem with that is the possible shrapnel and shockwave damage. So he needs to be under the table until that's passed then move on top once the tsunami is on its way
Sorry to hear about the job situation Drach, I'm in a similar if less immediate situation.
