I've never knitted before; this is my first project. (I crocheted baby booties once, though.) First, I looked up tutorials for each stitch. Then, I skimmed through all three videos to understand how each part is put together. Next, I practiced the first several rows on scrap yarn four times until they came out not wonky and looked like the tutorial. I also tried knitting it left handed, (my dominant hand), but it's just too confusing, so I'm going to knit it right handed. My supplies arrived in the mail and it took three days to knit the sweater. I made a few errors, but they're hardly noticeable. I learned a lot, and the sweater turned out pretty well. Hopefully my new niece/nephew will enjoy! Thanks so much for the tutorial!
I followed all 3 parts and knit a beautiful cardigan. Thanks for the simple words n detailed description. I want to make for 9 to 12 months, but don't know how many stitches to cast
OMW! I'm 67 - I don't knit often but when I've knitted baby jackets like this I've always done from bottom up and individual sections - front, back, two sleeves. How have I not known it can all be done as one?? I HAVE to try this. I've no one to knit for but I'm sure I can find someone to donate it too. Glad I've found your channel. It's good to knit along with you as we use the same knitting technique. I'm often thrown trying to follow someone who knits a different way to me. Best wishes. Julie in Sheffield UK.
Please advise me whether I should remove the knitting needles after knitting up to 13:37. Am I knitting the piece of the buttons separately?. I am stuck here
My yarn is here so I'll start this today. Grandbaby arriving first part of May :). Thanks again for the lovely videos. By the way, you have a great voice for instructing, easy listening.
hi and thank you for this pattern and the nice clear video instructions. Since I will be knitting a number of these cardigans for my first grandbaby and it is many years since I have knitted I wanted to also follow you written instructions as I am watching at half speed. At the end of the 5th row in written instructions it says I should have 50 stitches but I had less. Confusion followed and I want perfection for this first baby item. Eventually I noticed that you say cast on 40 stitches in video but 42 in written. This is not mentioned to annoy you or any bad reason but just to save the brainpower of anyone who has slow brainpower for medical reasons (like me lol). Thanks again for your efforts and free pattern 😀
Beautifully explained ❤️ Thank you so much for these 3 videos. I just started the knitting by watching these videos and successfully made a beautiful sweater for my newly born granddaughters for the very first time 🥰
I truly enjoy your videos; so clear and easy to follow, step by step for a beginner … I’ve just started a top down baby shawl neck sweater so you’re a lifesaver. I will need assistance with shaping the shawl neck if you had a video on this would be perfect 👍 Thank you so much 😊
Thanks a lot. I was searching one tutorial like this step by step, to make a cardigan. I’ve only done scarves, straight ones so long. Expecting first grandchild, desperately needed to make a cardigan. I’m going to start, as I’m already sure I can make one following you. Thanks and God bless.
So Woolly . Is there any way of emailing you the pics . Only I don’t do Twitter or other sociable medium . Your pattern was super easy to follow. I’m not a good or fast knitter , but I have got an incentive. First grandson ! . I’m going to knit this again but make it longer ,so it’s like a little sleeping bag
So question.. on the row where you are making the first button holes, around minute 14:40, are you working the knit or purl side here and also, at the end of the row at minute 14:44, how do you only have 2 stitches past the last stitch marker instead of three? I feel like I missed something.
Hello there Mama Wooly, I'm so excited I've made it to the button hole and its looking great, I think I can do this. Thank you so much, I've always wanted to knit I've been crocheting since I was a child and have always found knitting more difficult. But thanks to you I'm feeling more positive ill be successful. Yippee better than Christmas for me..thank you again hugs Rhonda ~
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for this tutorial, it is so simple and easy to follow and I managed to make an absolute amazing little cute sweater for my baby cousin's teddy bear!!!! It looks amazing despite being my first knitting project ever! Thank u once again
Any tips for not ending with a bit of ahole under the arms when thread is joined to start sleeve. I pulled it tight but still ended with a few holeystitches
I really love this sweater. Thank you for the tutorial. I just don't know the measurements for a 6-12 months baby size. How much to cast on and leaving how many stitches for sleeves/back. Is there a guide I could find. Thank you!
Hi! I hope it’s not too late to help you. I’m doing this with a medium-loose gauge with 40 stitches + the slip knot and I think it’s a great size for a 6-12 months baby!!
Thank you so much for this! How would you adjust the initial stitch numbers for a 3-6 month baby, please? I want to make another one, for my friend's 2 month old.
The sleeves could be difficult if this is your first time, so I’d recommend trying with a small “tube” first, and get familiar with the Magic Loop: th-cam.com/video/HF0GdPmcduM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Rrrko-SHfJIp3qAp I don’t have this pattern in more sizes, but take a look at this list, where you’ll find others: th-cam.com/play/PLuYKIe0IecIazeYVgb0c8g6sEX3fMfOVE.html&si=zSyN91vyQgtP-DUH Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was easy to follow and the cardigan is beautiful! I would like to knit a size up, how can I calculate the stitches I should cast on to begin with?
Made this for my niece’s baby. New to knit and so happy with results. Showed it to my mom and she wants one. Anyone know how to take this tiny thing and make adult sizes????
Hi, I’m currently following your written pattern and watching how you knit. I am a complete beginner. I have 50 stitches as your pattern says but when you counted your increases you gave more, I’m not understanding why? Also your Stockinette stitch looks so neat, my pattern does not have the vertical lines that your pattern is making, I’m wondering why I have not got this on my pattern.
Can you please give me the measurements for knitting a sweater for a 3year old. I need to know the number of stitches to cast and how many do i mark for the sleeves, the front and the back respecrively
Hi, so grateful for teacher like you ❤ QUESTION: is there instructions for bigger sizes Our newborn won’t fit in newborn size 😊He’s a big baby Thank you vm
I don’t have much of a selection of yarn choices where I live. Can someone clarify for me a possible name brand and yarn I can buy? I went on Amazon and many of the yarns were 3 ply and I want to make sure I get the right yarn. This is one of my first projects so I don’t really know what I am doing.
Hello there, neither do I (I buy everything online). This is the yarn I used for this pattern: amzn.to/430px14 #ad I love it, because it's smooth, superwash, and easy to work with. Happy knitting :)
@vickivandever4492 My pleasure! One more thing, before starting to knit, please read the instructions through (and cast on 42 stitches, not 40. I made a mistake when recording the video, and said 40). Enjoy 😊
If you do so, you change the gauge. The result will be a smaller cardigan. This means you need to knit more stitches and more rows, so you have to calculate the entire pattern. If you’re not an expert, my suggestion is to follow the instructions 😉 Please take a look of the written pattern on my website.
I got through almost the entire 1st video. But once I completed back, it shows the right and left parts, and goes into making button hole, but nothing about how to knit the left and right sections. Is part of the video missing? I need instruction for what to do after I purled to 3 1/2 inches. Thanks
This is a top-down construction, the back, the sleeves, and the right and left front are knitted in one piece until the proper length is reached. If you watch the whole video 1, and the beginning of the video 2, you'll see the "big picture". Also, I recommend taking a look at the written instructions (you'll find the link below this video, on the description box). Good luck ;)
I figured out my.mistake. I just did purl instead of increase and purl. I'm new to this. I have been going mostly by the videos. Any suggestions on how to read patterns? I think your videos are fantastic.
I’m happy to hear that! My advice is to read the whole pattern first, and get familiar with the abbreviations. It’s important to understand the construction of the piece before starting to knit 😉 Good luck 🍀

What a clear, concise video! I only learnt to knit 3 days ago (have crocheted for many years) and I honestly think I could manage this cardigan! 👏👏👏
Thank you for teaching that cast on. I've never seen it before. It makes a beautiful edge!
Please advise me whether I should remove the knitting needles after knitting up to 13:37. Am I knitting the piece of the buttons separately?. I am stuck here

Hi can this be made smaller for premature babies?
So after the minute 13:15 , we just kint without any increase for the whole piece?
Please check the written instructions: sowoolly.net/how-to-knit-a-newborn-cardigan-for-beginners/

Can I use 4m straight need and 4m circular please?
You could, but maybe it’s going to be a little smaller. What’s your gauge?
