The roads at the tip of Manhattan are from the original founding of the city. The reason they curve and look weird is likely because that's where the land originally ended. Lots of Manhattan (especially the tip) has been built on reclaimed land. So the roads would curve with the original edge, and then over time the island got expanded so more roads were added.
It's estimated that by 1970 the land area of Manhattan has been expanded by 29% or around 3000 acres. Also in some areas the landfill is literally trash.
Yep. Battery Park City area was land reclamation made up of material excavated from the World Trade Centre's construction and other projects, for example.
The roads in the financial district are less of a grid because they're old: that's where the original Dutch colony of New Amsterdam was. Some of the streets still follow the course of the those old tracks laid out within the walls of the colony. Wall Street follows the course of the old town walls, and Water Street runs along the quay (the site of the colony is now ringed with reclaimed land). It's worth thinking about this when finalising the road layout down there: where were the town walls? Where were the gates? The quays? The fort? That'll give you the start and end points of the oldest roads down there.
Manhattan has a TON of mixed-use development with ground level commercial topped by residential. Also a TOOOOOOOOOOON of brownstones/row houses. That could help you get a good mix of buildings and zoning types. Also, you'll obviously need to think about as subway when building anything inspired by New York. Looking forward to how this proceeds.
I was just thinking that he should be using more mixed use buildings in the game which are the ones you’re talking about with a store on the botttom and residential above
This build is intense, so much to uncover. Good thing you've laid the bones out and they look good to start. The detailing part and figuring out where the central station and train tracks will lay.... that's another story. As for the name of Fake Manhattan, Algonquin is taken, thanks GTA IV, so I thought about Franklin Island (Ben Franklin), since the he's on our highest currency bill, and Fake Manhattan had the highest population.
Well, just off the top of my head... ~ Five Pence (Five Points) ~ Quids (Queens) ~ Milhattan (Manhattan) ~ The Bucks (The Bronx) ~ Boodle (Brooklyn) ~ Hoka (Harlem) ~ Yapers (Yonkers) ~ Franklins (Fort Lee) A lot of the streets in lower NYC are/were literal: ~ Wall Street is where the original fortifications for New Amsterdam used to stand ~ Canal Street was originally a major canal to bring shipping inland ~ Pearl Street is where the original coastline was, the shores lined with oyster beds ~ Water Street, Front Street, and South Street mark each step they took filling in the East River ~ West Street marks a similar expansion into the Hudson; Hudson Street, east of Greenwich Street, marks the original shoreline ~ Trinity Place and Church Street were so named because they led to Trinity Church (once the tallest building in North America) ~ Fulton Street was named for the Fulton Ferry, which used to be where the Pearl Street Playground is now ~ Old Slip Park was once an actual slip for shipping by Corlaer's The list goes on, but the pattern should be recognizable.
By the time the grid plan was implemented, the roads in Lower Manhattan were already in place and influenced by the original Dutch colony. Lower Manhattan was already densely populated and developed, making it difficult to impose a grid system. Additionally, land ownership was a deterrent; when the city was initially developing, physical features such as streams or hills often defined properties. Additionally, Wall Street is named Wall Street because there was a literal wall. The wall was built to protect the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam from the British attacks. You can still see the original wood posts embedded in the streets of Wall Street.
With the massive population expansion in this episode, I think adding more city services should be the focus of the next one. Maybe even adding more transit options connecting both cities. Yes, I'm asking for more subway and train episodes 😅
One thing to keep in mind, are the relatively lower buildings in middle Manhattan. There used to be a lake there, South of central park. (collect pond) And as such, the area is marshy and prone to flooding. The most infamous example of this, was "the tombs". An egyptian revival-style prison known for it's dark and damp interior.
Historically, Midtown (specifically the Garment District) was home to various industries; the West Side next to it was home to many rail-marine freight yards, where loads of freight cars were shipped across the Hudson river from New Jersey. So think the area around Hells Kitchen, where Hudson Yards is. The New York Central built an at-grade freight line on 10th and 11th Avenues, all the way down to Chambers Street way back in the 1850s. But in the early 1900s, there were discussions to elevating the line, so they re-built it as the elevated High Line.
Bro just casually dropped the Cities Skylines 2 Cover art on a random Saturday! Insane build, I've eagerly been waiting for this ever since this series began!!
"Manhattan" is derived from a Lenape word, so maybe some anglicized version of "miltëwakàn," which apparently means gift or "nishinxke," which means twenty?
Here's some potential names for different areas on your map. Harlem=Holdings Yonkers=Bankers Bronx=Stocks Staten Island=Statements Queens=Tellers Brooklyn=Brokers Manhattan=Monopoly Long Island=Long Dividends
Ahhh TwoDollars, don't worry mate. This looks pretty darn great. I definitely felt the NYC vibe and this was one of the most satisfying CS2 vids I've seen so far.
Since Manhattan's name comes from the Lenape language, choosing a name rooted in this language would be a fitting tribute. For example, the Lenape word Ahpookwe (meaning 'to trade or barter') could be Anglicized as Ahpookway. Similarly, Nahitun translates to 'to buy or trade for,' and Winkwéak, which refers to 'trade or commerce,' could be adapted as Winkway.
"NY" is riddled with Museums you may want to think about The Metropolitan which faces 5th ave and sits inside central park the googinhime is just up the street from the Met
The word "Manhatten" is a Lenape word for "gather" or "gathering place". Little Etymology lesson for everyone. I figured that maybe seeing what the word for money was, but it's literally "Moni" as it was only a concept introduced by European 'settlers'. All that to say, I have no idea what to suggest naming the island.
Suggestion to name it "Stuyversant", which is a reference to a historical governor of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (Stuyvesant), while also adding an R, reference the word Stuiver, which means "Nickel" in Dutch.
It's upsetting that even after all this time, they can't fix the most annoying issue from SC1 of ground elevation ruining the zoning on even perfectly straight roads.
coming back to say that, having built NY-inspired cities (in CS1), you're nailing what always seemed surprisingly difficult: getting the general sweep of an iconic Manhattan-esque skyline. especially in the closing cinematics, the Downtown-to-Midtown silhouette is 🔥 as far as names go, a couple ideas came to mind: - playing on currency-related names, maybe borrow from NY's Dutch colonial past; before the Euro (going wayyyy back), the Dutch Guilder or Florin might link NY's real-world history to a very Dollarton tie-in - maybe not the city/island as a whole, but specific, smaller districts/areas, etc. - similarly, "twee" ("tway") is "two," "twintig" is "twenty," so one/the other/some combination of the two - echoing others' suggestions about Lenape/-related words, to honor the region's even-earlier history/Indigenous communities and for transit (*when* it's time!), it could be cool to embrace the city's old elevated trains. I'm thinking of the High Line on the west side-but still operational-as a model, along with still-used elevated lines in Queens (7, N/W) and the Bronx (1, 4/5 trains), how they're integrated into the city's fabric, etc. there's also the Metro North line on Manhattan's east side, which becomes elevated between Grand Central and the Harlem-125th Street Station. I'm completely with you on not loving below-ground subways in CS, but you've got great bones to build out an above-ground/elevated network already!
Some options for money related names for manhattan: - Minthattan: from "mint" where money gets manufactured. And it also give the vibe of fake name. - Pencehattan or Poundhattan.
Once upon a time, the whole Lower East Side was low rent. I’m an old man. 😂 Now none of us old time New Yorkers can afford to live anywhere in New York City, much less Manhattan itself.
There’s a really great video by Daniel Steiner where he goes into some detail about the road layout and history of Manhattan, and why some streets seem to do what they want and why others are very rigid and organised. It’s a really great video if you like learning about that kind of stuff!
the way to get grids that arent all messed up is by turning off road guidelines and snapping to grid, then you drag your road further than actually want it, then delete the excess road behind where it connects to another road
Given the space constraints on the Manhattan side, which makes it difficult to have a run up road of reasonable grade for the bridge, you might consider doing something like on the queens side of the queensboro bridge, where one of the ramps wraps around buildings and is really squeezed in.
6:10 Access to the ports. The trade center was on Broadway/Broad St, which is in the middle of the island, so they curved the roads towards the water which had the ports. This allowed for easier facilitation of goods 12:02 Broadway is famously diagonal from the rest of the grid and has theaters, so it makes sense that it would actually go into the grid and into the theater district rather than end down at 14th st
Look at your map again. Broadway comes down in a mostly southwestern direction, as it is mostly one way, all the way from around sleepy hollow, where it is two way in that area, thru midtown and to close to downtown Manhattan, where it is one way.
The roads in downtown curve towards where the ocean used to be. It's the most European road layout in the US from how there was no plan and it was just some Dutch guys building roads wherever they wanted
Let us have a moment of silence for all the many Cities: Skylines players which have attempted to recreate Manhattan, in which nearly all have ended up creating some dystopian nightmare along the way.
I love this channel, I’ve been watching you for quite a while, and I love cities skylines. Haven’t been able to play cities skylines 2 because I play on console.
Maybe a long shot but as Manhattan was originally a Dutch colony it could have a Dutch name. The Netherlands used to have the Gulden before the Euro was introduced. The coins had some interesting names. Stuiver, dubbeltje, florijn, daalder. Idk maybe there is something there
25:17 its not just moving in, at the second intersection, everybody is trying to get into the single middle lane, as that is the only lane that goes through the tunnel, might wanna fix that regardless haha
The history of New York - and especially the top of Manhattan - is that it was originally built as a colony, that the Dutch very loosely planned and was basically laid out as the Dutch settled more and more. The further northern you go (basically like Houston and above) its becomes a planned grid by the British
Great naming suggestion for your Manhattan-inspired island would be Monopotan/Monopoton. The name is derived from the Monopoly board game, figuring the island would have the monopoly of the region. And it also ties in with your naming suggestions that are about money, such as New Dimesburg/ New Dollarton
I feel like a funny tribute to Wall Street could be "Floor Road." As for name suggestions of the area, I would call he area Matehattan or something, i dunno. Love this series but mate!!
The power plant is a Con Edison plant that produces Natural Gas and electricity. The housing complex next to it was built after WW2 for teachers and other neighborhood folks. It is now $$.
Broadway st technically runs almost the entire length of Manhattan. The city diverted the north bound traffic to park street because that intersection was too crazy
Have you ever thought about making a video on your process for building these cities? I watch your builds but don’t fully understand what works and what doesn’t and would love to know ur process behind knowing what works in a city whether that be road layouts or building ect, also watching from New Zealand!
FINALLY! two dollars as u said when assets come on the market can u also maybe delve into the history of neighbourhoods like upper east side is old money rich, tribeca and soho is "new money rich" and so what i am asking is for u to make ghettos and rich neighbourhoods this will greatly add sense of reality to manhattan, I myself tried to build 1:1 manhattan on CS1 and it was lot of fun. I know ur not super high detail but it would be good so see detailing around famous neighbourhoods of Manhattan.
If you want to keep the graphics of photo mode; simply follow these steps: 1. save your game - 2. Open photo mode and fiddle with the settings till you like it - 3. then hit the 'Esc' key - 4. Finally load your save that you made in step one. Tada! now you have a beautiful scene whilst engineering your city.
Hey, big cities have towers where a highschool / middleschool resides in a 25 story tower, it occupied about 3 -5 floors for classroom. that would be a good asset to create and use
Would be great if, a general rule, zones tried to utilize all surrounding streets evenly, and that maximum lot depth was automatically decided the block median. So that for instance with a 4x8, the lot depth would automatically be 2, 6x12 it would be 3 and so on... Of course, this wouldn't be perfect either, because sometimes we'd want to override this and have larger buildings placed - But I'd much rather be forced to plop large buildings once in a while than all the little ones all the time.
New Guilderdam, a reference to New Amsterdam and the money used in the Dutch republic, including New Amsterdam at the time: the Guilder. (17th century). Much of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut were historically part of the Dutch colony of New Netherlands. Located to the south of the New England colony. A lot of places still have Dutch (related) names. Some well-known names include; Harlem, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Coney Island, Flushing, Wall Street, Broad Way, Bushwick, the Bronx, the Battery, Greenwich Village, Hempstead, Yonkers, Dutch street, Nassau street and many more. The Dutch history of New York City (and state) is very extensive. This different influence from the Dutch other than from the British one is partly why the city is so different compared to any other US city. “The island at the centre of the world” by Russell Shorto is a very good and interesting book about this forgotten history of the US.
21:30 The fact that those streets are both classified as highways and have 65 mile an hour speed limits, bruh nah, that one on the right is short and super urban and would still likely be 25-30 and the one that goes up the ramp, it probably goes to an actual highway, but that section at the intersection there would likely be 25, there is Vision Zero anyway in New York. The rest of the highway might be 45-55, but it would start going down from 35 to 25 as you approach that intersection and the urban area/highway end.
Wow, i cant even imagine doing something like this. Great job. Some things I noticed that are different. Columbus circle is not in the right spot. It should be on the left lower corner of Central Park. Broadway is not straightin midtown around time square and south to around the Flat Iron building. It angles. Its all the other avenues that run north south that are straight. So Broadway actually crosses some of these avenues on an angle. So thats why you ran into the problem of sort of making Park Avenue look like its Broadway. Park avenue ends at Grand Central Station. Then contiues north after the station. Park av and Madison dont go all the way down the finacial district. Madison starts at around 23 st. Forgot where Park, and Lexington starts. Oh and thats 5th ave along the east side of the park. But this just goes to show how complicated this build is and you defintly got the flavor of it right. And not complaining. Just pointing out some of the things that are different. Great job.
For name ideas could possibly call it New Gulden / New Guilder to keep in the money theme and reference Manhattan’s New Amsterdam past (the gulden being the pre-euro currency of the Netherlands).
I wouldn't be NY if it doesn't have mountains of garbage piled or bedbug infested furniture on the sidewalks! I also lived in the upper east side on 72nd and 2nd, there is a man notorious for jogging in the "Borat" swimsuit except metallic silver with sweatbands to match. I lived in Brooklyn too, Ditmas Park, and I worked all over the city, I had between a 1.5 hour to 2 hour commute on the subway everyday, transferring at Coney Island. They frequently close stations down for line repairs and have "shuttle bus" transfers between the closed stations. The R and parts of the D were still destroyed from the hurricane when I moved out in 2015. I know there are assets from CS1 for Hudson Yards so it would be cool to see that again or the naval yard in Brooklyn because it's a huge artists space in the old buildings, really interesting place. Some of the streets by Wall St. are pedestrian streets instead of for cars. Prospect Park has free summer concerts and Green-Wood Cemetery is the highest land elevation in the city, they would make nice points of interest. The Bronx Zoo, there's one on Staten Island, Redhook is also art centric and ESPECIALLY the Gowanus Canal, you could plop some industry. It's pretty industrial looking around Coney Island on the D. Oh also the unmarked white van that is the Ikea shuttle outside Borough Hall that you REALLY hope is the Ikea van lol. If you need some info, hmu! I worked in public and charter schools all over the city, in every borough!
Following the logic of money centric names for New Dimesburg, I think Pelfmore could be really good. A pelf is money, but gain illegally which could tie into some Lore if needed.
I think a name based on Dutch currency would be appropriate, considering New York's Dutch history. The currency in the Netherlands was the Dutch Guilder (florin) before the Euro. The Dutch frugality and commercial skill would, in my opinion, give a name in this category more significance and depth. My proposals are the names of the coins but Americanised, like they did with boroughs around New York for Dutch cities (Haarlem → Harlem, Breukelen → Brooklyn, Staateneiland → Staten Island) So Manhattan would have to become an overarching name, I propose the name of the currency "(New) Florin" or "(New) Guilder", either that or the (correct) name for the Manhattoe (namesake of Manhattan) people: Weckquaesgeek →Wechasgeek, because it's easier to pronounce, how American (🦅). With boroughs consisting of names of Dutch Guilder coins, how the Dollar has quarters, dimes etc. Here are some of my proposals of neighbourhood names: Stuiver (ƒ 0.05) → Stuyver Dubbeltje (ƒ 0.10) → Doubleton Kwartje (ƒ 0.25) → Quart Guilder (ƒ 1.00) → Guylder Piek (ƒ 1.00, alternative) → Peek Rijsdaalder (ƒ 2.50) → Ryksdale Riks (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Ricks Knaak (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Knake Vijfje (ƒ 5.00) → Fyve I hope you consider using some of these as I would think they would fit nicely, and feel free to mess around with Americanization (🦅)

~ Pearl Street is where the original coastline was, the shores lined with oyster beds
~ Water Street, Front Street, and South Street mark each step they took filling in the East River
~ West Street marks a similar expansion into the Hudson; Hudson Street, east of Greenwich Street, marks the original shoreline
~ Trinity Place and Church Street were so named because they led to Trinity Church (once the tallest building in North America)
~ Fulton Street was named for the Fulton Ferry, which used to be where the Pearl Street Playground is now
~ Old Slip Park was once an actual slip for shipping by Corlaer's

Possibly as a root to is Dutch founding, the city could be the old currency of “Guilderhatten”
Loving the build.

as far as names go, a couple ideas came to mind:
- playing on currency-related names, maybe borrow from NY's Dutch colonial past; before the Euro (going wayyyy back), the Dutch Guilder or Florin might link NY's real-world history to a very Dollarton tie-in - maybe not the city/island as a whole, but specific, smaller districts/areas, etc.

30:28 that spot that your cursor is at would be a perfect spot for a madison square garden style stadium
I love this channel, I’ve been watching you for quite a while, and I love cities skylines. Haven’t been able to play cities skylines 2 because I play on console.
Cant believe that all this time later, these traffic issues and other UI glitches still arent fixed... great video at least!
Maybe a long shot but as Manhattan was originally a Dutch colony it could have a Dutch name. The Netherlands used to have the Gulden before the Euro was introduced. The coins had some interesting names. Stuiver, dubbeltje, florijn, daalder. Idk maybe there is something there
A truly ambitious build. Bravo
No joke, I think we have assets coming soon, you just give the vibe they are
For photo mode, I think there’s a mod called Preserve Photo Mode where you can keep the settings while playing the game
I'm from jersey city. That's sweet!
Manhattan could maybe be Twohattan? :)
Tdt, it’s hard watching you upgrade roads, get it together man, just hold and drag the whole road to upgrade loool thank you sir. Missed the vids btw🎉
You HAVE to make the New York subway next. Love your videos ❤
Great vid. I basically never zone anymore, only plop.
TDT organically discovering US-style corporate governance by just giving tax-cuts to the rich is iconic
Pro tip: zone in 2x4 rows, wait for the to fill in, and fill in another row, and another, and another until you get what you need
I have been waiting for this video since the launch of CS2
Yes!! Finally!
A transit infrastructure episode is going to be insane.
Waiting for this moment for a while
Manhattan could be called something like “Big Buck”, which has a nice ring to it and is money related
"No public transport" meanwhile New York has some of the greatest public transit in America in real life and has the largest metro.
Have you ever thought about making a video on your process for building these cities? I watch your builds but don’t fully understand what works and what doesn’t and would love to know ur process behind knowing what works in a city whether that be road layouts or building ect, also watching from New Zealand!
Big Bank, from Big Apple
Have you made this map available on PDX Mods. I'd love to work on the Brooklyn side starting with my hood.
Bro did not need an introduction, straight to the point 🥶🥶
FINALLY! two dollars as u said when assets come on the market can u also maybe delve into the history of neighbourhoods like upper east side is old money rich, tribeca and soho is "new money rich" and so what i am asking is for u to make ghettos and rich neighbourhoods this will greatly add sense of reality to manhattan, I myself tried to build 1:1 manhattan on CS1 and it was lot of fun.
"What's Broadway doing down here? I can't figure out these roads. Whatever!". Said by many. LOL
Maybe something like Emperica or empire related could be a good new york sounding name for the Manhattan like island.
Any significant investment of time in this pre-beta is a waste of time.
Bankstown/Bankside could be a fitting name as a reference to Wall St and how it is on the “Bank” of a river
Fyi, there is a mod that keeps the photomode settings when you exit photo mode :)
My proposals are the names of the coins but Americanised, like they did with boroughs around New York for Dutch cities (Haarlem → Harlem, Breukelen → Brooklyn, Staateneiland → Staten Island)
So Manhattan would have to become an overarching name, I propose the name of the currency "(New) Florin" or "(New) Guilder", either that or the (correct) name for the Manhattoe (namesake of Manhattan) people: Weckquaesgeek →Wechasgeek, because it's easier to pronounce, how American (🦅).
With boroughs consisting of names of Dutch Guilder coins, how the Dollar has quarters, dimes etc.
Here are some of my proposals of neighbourhood names:
Stuiver (ƒ 0.05) → Stuyver
Dubbeltje (ƒ 0.10) → Doubleton
Kwartje (ƒ 0.25) → Quart
Guilder (ƒ 1.00) → Guylder
Piek (ƒ 1.00, alternative) → Peek
Rijsdaalder (ƒ 2.50) → Ryksdale
Riks (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Ricks
Knaak (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Knake
Vijfje (ƒ 5.00) → Fyve
I hope you consider using some of these as I would think they would fit nicely, and feel free to mess around with Americanization (🦅)
Some names I had for my Manhattan-esque build were Roseburn Island, Canarie Island, and Muskogee
Naming this version of SoHo “PesoHo” to fit the theme, and this Queens “Reals”
I like your videos
