Summer of 95 in the afternoon after the local summer program for me. Power Rangers was getting old for me and this show gave me more action with bladed weapons, special attacks, and a face turn that made sense. Lol. Saw this before I even heard of anything called Dragonball. Ronin Warriors will always be my favorite anime.

This was absolutely my gateway anime. It introduced me to so much, not just anime itself but online fandom. I wrote my first ever fan fic for Ronin Warriors when I was 10 or 11 years old (it was a 100% innocent monster of the week type story lol) back around 1997. Ronin Warriors has remained as a sort of safe space for me over 20 years later, a show and fandom I can slip back into when I'm feeling down. I have loved them since I was in elementary school and I'm 35 years old now. What's funny too was when I first was dating my now husband I told him about the show and he had this look of knowing on his face. He grew up in Italy watching the Italian version of it, Cinque Samurai, and it's been his favorite since childhood too.

I didn’t realize that the US was pushing anime in the mid 90s really hard. Between this, Sailor Moon, Dragon Warrior (yes, there was a dub of this show), Dragon Ball (I remembered the original version before Z came out) and Samurai Pizza Cats.

I was in the 6th grade in 1995, when it aired. It was my first and, to this day, favourite anime ever. It just felt a lot more impactful than other kids' animated shows of the era. I liked TMNT, Transformers, X-Men and the classic Looney Toons but Ronin Warriors moved me. Seeing a group of guys so bonded to each other that they would give their lives for one another made a huge impression on me, being almost friendless at the time. The show would remain on my mind until I could find DVDs a decade later.

WOW. This was an INCREDIBLE retrospective look at one of my all-time favorite series. This was quickly forgotten after the 90s, and didn't get the respect it deserves. if you bring it up nowadays, it gets a "huh?" response. But it was awesome, even if only from a nostalgic perspective. And it should have 100% gotten games like the DBZ series got!

    • @omniframe8612

Thank you for the positive feedback. I studies Japanese for a little while but didn't really get too far in conversational dialogue, but i'm a huge fan on Japanese samurai history which is why I approached this video from a more historical POV as opposed to a review. I know there is a Samurai Troopers VG that was made in Japan and there is a manga series. I didn't go into detail about that because i'm not really a gamer or a big manga person, but I do think Ronin Warriors should have had a larger fan base, If you remember Dragon Ball Z didn't pop off when it came to the states, it didn't get mainstream attention until the 2000s.

    • @HylianFox3
      @HylianFox3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

"And it should have 100% gotten games like the DBZ series got!"
One of my deepest desires is for this series to get a Koei-Tecmo 'Warriors' type game, that features the entire OG series and OVA cast as playable characters.
I mean come on! The English version even has 'Warriors' right there in the name! Seems like a no-brainer to me, but sadly this franchise remains the realm of obscurity...

Great overview of this fantastic series! I grew around so much of its merch back in the late 80s & early 90s in Thai grocery stores because they would sell candies that had figurines of either the Samurai Troopers or the Dark Warlords back in the day. I still miss this dub every now and then but I'm really itching to see it subbed at some point. It's a neat show but I do have to say that it still doesn't hold a candle to Saint Seiya. It's was good for it's time, and you can tell that it was an 80s Sunrise production given its pre-inclination for using Tokyo as a backdrop. Great stuff!

This is one of my top old school anime when not talking about DBZ. Always tried to get this recorded before karate class, and watching it after session. I likely have a couple of episodes still retained on VHS somewhere. If my mother hasn't thrown them out yet. lol

Great Video! Love the extra knowledge about the villains. Loved this show, was great watching it growing up, getting to usually watch it before I had to leave for school. I think I watched it on the USA network. The music in this show is really great too.
Anubis was a great villian/hero! Wanna say this was the 1st time I experienced the bad guy becoming your friend trope/cliche` that many shows and games use. Not that it's a bad thing.
The one I didn't like was the OVAs that were created after the show ended. I think I really only enjoyed the Legend of the White armor OVA, and personally thought the other 2 were just not good. The new armors would have been cool, but I just couldn't get through the weird story.
Overall the show itself is amazing and still worth watching today!

Finally someone has done a proper review on the series and I couldn't have asked for a better one. I have looked for one of Ronin warriors before on here 2 years ago since it seems the new "In" thing today is to do reviews on anime, new and old, since anime is mainstream now like you said vs our time when anime was still wowing us on Toonami, but no such luck, at least not as good as yours. I have been saying this for years but I would love to see this series along with Gundam Wing rebooted today with modern writing ✍ and animation. I think it would do significantly better now that the reboot/remake craze is in and everyone wants there old shows and video games remade

@@omn8612 well, i guess i'll have to wait a few years for it to be uploaded to the internet. It might come to the US one day. (Probably maaaaaany years later. Lol) The 2 reasons I want it is for the picture quality obviously, but also to see if they redid the subtitles. The DVD's subtitles were a bit flawed throughout some of the episodes. From the top of my head I remember learning the Troopers and Mashos (Ronins and Warlords) special moves in their original japanese names for them and for some reason on the episode where Rajura (Dais) came to fight Ryo and Cye. (Ryo and Shin) He clearly mentions something about his special move "Tou Chi Mou" (I can't remember what that translates to, but it's his special move for sure) but the subtitle for some reason had wriiten out "Do you like to play games" which was what the English dubbed version incorrectly had as the line, but then later down the line whenever he says that, the subtitle reads "Web Of Deception". So i soooo hope they had someone redo the subtitles and not just use the DVD's subs.

This was a very informative, and overall great video about Ronin Warriors/Yoiroiden Samurai Troopers.
    1. It made more sense for Cale to be named "Anubis" not only for his look but how he is able to use Wolves/Dogs to attack Sage/Seiji. I just didn't realize back then until this video.
    2. You were spot on about the character development and how they got together was sudden and outta know where, but it was the message of the show that got me.
To Elaborate; How Talpa (I love the VA btw) is essentially the negative aspect of the human spirit, and the Ronin's and Kaos are fighting to preserve the Positive parts with their guiding virtues.
Greed, Wrath, and Pride are only just the tip of the problems in their world and Talpa was easily able to manipulate people because it was at it's highest, and everything went to shit.
It was the fight for humanities life and it's soul. Which is why this will always be my favorite anime. They went through hell but they kept fighting, Shiten redeemed himself, and sacrificed his life to ensure the future of humanity was protected going forward with Kayura.
Yeah, it may not be as deep as I am making it, but to me, seeing where we are today with Covid and everything else, it doesn't seem to be that far off.
    Anyway, Great video!

I swear to god, calling Ronin Warriors/YST a "gateway anime" doesn't even begin to describe it for me.
This show had such a profound impact on me as a kid it's not even funny. It wasn't just a gateway for anime, this show introduced me to all sorts of aspects of Japanese culture and history. From legendary samurai to the tenets of Confucius (I've seriously considered getting 仁義礼智信 tattooed on my arm, no really!), to various real-world locations in Japan such as Akiyoshidai National Park and the Naruto Strait with its famous whirlpools (and yes, this where the 'Naruto' anime gets its name from). I even bought the 30th Anniversary commemorative book despite it being entirely in Japanese.
The more I looked into this series and its supplementary materials (did you know there were radio dramas? yeah, YST has goddamn radio dramas), the more I grew to love and appreciate it.
It's a tragedy that this series never really became popular, even in Japan. There's just so much potential to be had with its themes of action, friendship, and even spiritualism. I'm not too keen on the "Let's reboot literally everything" craze that's been happening lately, but here's one instance where I would GLADLY see a comeback.

I know this vid is old but I am a fan of Samurai Troopers I got the books of them , one of the books is a manga the Anniversary of this series. I have the Original series in English and the OG sub as well. How I found it was a bit of a remembrance of Ryo of the Wildfire looks like Keith of Voltron that's how I mistake it . A mistake I'm glad I did because I grew up Voltron from the 80's. Living in Chicago at the time this anime came out on public TV it was my escape during my radiation treatments. I just had to share it sorry

Oddly enough I watched Ronin Warriors the summer it debuted here in the states, I watched it long before I ever even heard of Power Rangers, which actually came out first.

I was 8 when I saw it in France(Club Do). All the most great anime was here and Yoroiden Samurai Troopers still one of them. The plot is classic but always effective with a lot of feelings and intensity. Thanks to the fantastic character design/armors and the awesome Ost. The animation still incredible today. I find him more personnality than a lot of another average anime without soul. For example I rewatched the 4 Oav with Mukala "Legend of the Supreme Armor" and man... The draw and production are just fantastic. Yes this is one of my favorite anime ever for all those reasons. It have a very special place. Chodando SO-EN-ZAN !!! 🤘😎😇
