Actually the Untamed is an adaptation of the book, just like the animation. I recommend you to read the novel "Mo Dao Zu Shi"since is the original story. In the adaptations sometimes they skipped some scenes or changed them because of the censor.
"The Untamed" is specifically the live-action adaptation, the original story and the rest of the adaptations are called "Modao Zushi", MDZS for short, sometimes translated as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation or Founder of Diabolism. The donghua is also an older adaptation than the live action (it started airing one year before) so it's not really accurate to call it The Untamed 😅
