52:16 The Bromance is off the charts, holy shit I wasn't expecting that xD
The kindness Snake gives Hal after everything that happened is to give him a mission so Hal doesn't need to dwell on the grief.
A moment that says a lot about both of their characters now that I'm thinking about it.
They're both incredible characters and give on positive vibes to strive for in real life. writing masterpieces, without super spoilers they both took in and take care of the 3rd person who lives with them in the 4th game in their nomadic plane. they had no reason to do that, but along side all the other things they do they do that too.
Keep in mind that Hal was a young teenager when the "affair" with his stepmother began. Even if he was correct about her having "seduced" him (and that it's not just a lie that he's telling himself after the fact to let himself think that he willingly participated in the "affair"), he would not have been able to give consent legally or morally due to the significant age difference, and the fact that they were stepmother and stepson had inherently further imbalanced the power dynamic of the "relationship".
In short, this wasn't an affair. It was nothing short of sexual abuse, and Hal was the victim, not a perpetrator.
Do we know how old exactly was he back then? Huey died in 1997 so it must have been before that and Hal was born in 1980, so his father died when he was 17.
Welonz: "You gotta give me a break, here! We gotta process this one at a time."
Game: "TIME FOR MORE CUTSCENES!"
Ahhh, that explains the Otacon/Snake fics. Also lol to your "can love bloom on a battlefield?"
But yeah, poor Otacon, man; I remember growing up and people were blaming him what happened to Emma despite he was unambiguously molested and taken advantage of. It doesn't help the wording used was being in a "relationship with her mother."
This is another part of self-blaming there. He isn't without fault, but saying it's (all) his fault is cruel and unfair.
Between drowning, getting choked, burned, sprayed with coolant, getting shot, and getting stabbed, Welonz is making sure Emma will be traumatised for the rest of her life. Too soon? Too soon.
And RE: the Cyborg Ninja reveal; it’s kinda funny that back in the Ames rescue episode Olga appeared and asked Ocelot who the cyborg ninja was and Welonz’s surprise at Olga’s appearance was perfect timing. “Olga?” Part 7, around 12:30.
Plus even without knowing what happens, you can kind of believe it being possible since Olga's wanting to avenge her father & being highly skeptical of Ocelot. So the motive for going turncoat and working with snake (presumably to take down Ocelot and/or Solidus) tracks, though the mystery still is how Olga ended up as the cyborg ninja...
@@teagame1011 *spoiler* for next 1/2 episodes
Ocelot made Olga to be a stand-in for Grey Fox altough she probably didn't realize it
You say Emma will be traumatized for the rest of her life as though that's a long time...
52:16 got damn after all these years I still shed a tear of brotherly love 🥲
The whole "I enjoy killing" codec call was because of how many people you've killed if I remember correctly. Basically the game is mad at you for killing a bunch of people like how it gave you the "I didn't feel anything when I killed them" codec call early in the game when you talked to Rose after killing someone
it's a very good codec call though so I'd consider it more of a reward, at least for character development heh
@@dalmaskadeadtrash3592 Yes, extremely suiting for him. I mean, with Revengeance and all.
I think it's actually hardcoded to play, seeing what happens later. I always got it even on pacifist runs.
@@zummone It might be but I've never seen it and played the game multiple times, weird
@@datguyuno98 Probably since its uncommon in playthroughs to save in that particular spot just before arsenal? So most people just get the dialog for saving at arsenal.
Unless it's not location dependent in which case maybe it just takes frugal use of saving to get to that point in the dialog it shows up?
In the hardest difficulty getting spotted is an insta game over. You can tranquilize/kill guards (I think), but it's risky if you don't take them down at once. You are also rewarded for non-lethal playthroughs, but fighting bosses with the tranq pistol is obviously harder.
Easter eggs in this episode from the top of my head:
-GW stands for George Washington, following the USA/patriotism terminology going on.
-Like with Meryl in MGS1, having Emma following you allows all kinds of shenanigans. You can drag her around on a chokehold, knock her out and crawl over her to piss off Otacon, scare her with bugs, etc.
-As Raiden said, he's done a lot of VR training, which includes playing MGS1. In MGS1, Meryl gives you the level 5 keycard shortly after you meet her in person, but here Emma doesn't give you her level 5 card until it becomes needed, which is why Raiden gets annoyed, as it deviated from his expectations set by the VR training.
-During the sniping segment, you can use the mic to hear Emma talking to herself (iirc she likes Raiden's hair) and later speaking with a guard who lets her go; you can also catch Snake talking to himself (he wonders if Otacon would mind if he asked Emma out).
Actually, you can determine if you want to have being spotted to be a game over or not. It's an option.
They injected drugs on Emma's knees. Ocelot says it when you're with Ames spying on their conversation, and Emma tells you that herself.
39:11 - That's why it's called Meta Gear Solid!
40:37 - IIRC, that guard was wearing headphones and listening to music, so his walk was also a bit of a dance.
IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR PEAK METAL GEAR, I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT EPISODE
Right? I just hope she answers the calls. :D Every. Single. One.
@@Shadowcat2085 I hear it's amazing.
If you need a laugh after that emotional beating, there's an easter egg if you aim the directional mic at one of the pillars when Emma goes behind them.
You can with both of them one she comments on his hair the other she meets johnny
@@aceofhearts87it’s not a wig 😭
…he says even though wigs are his unlockable items in this and MGRR lol. (I’m aware people with hair can wear wigs)
(Disclaimer: In this comment there are no spoilers for anything not already seen in the game. Pinky promise. But maybe watch this episode first.)
Here's a cool thing that not many people know: Olga's voice actress in Japanese was the same one as Meryl's in MGS1. So obviously, if you play this in Japanese, then all of the scenes with Snake and Olga become much, much, much more surreal: in terms of audio, it always sounds like it's MGS1 Snake talking to MGS1 Meryl - both in the Tanker chapter and in the Plant chapter.
This is super damn meta, and it ties into how this game in many other ways makes you really question if anything is really there or if you're imagining it or if it's VR. Meryl is otherwise absent from this game, and I think the player is supposed to wonder (at least a little bit) about her absence.
This other one is more well-known, I think, but it's related to Olga: Solidus Snake and Solid Snake also have the same voice in Japanese. So you can imagine what it would be like if you could see those scenes with Solidus (off-screen) and Olga (off-screen) talking, except they're voiced by David Hayter and Debi Mae West. It's super surreal and super meta. But the game never got localized that way.
Additionally, I have heard that in early development, Pliskin was supposed to speak with Liquid Snake's voice, like a part of his "act" up until the reveal. A part of me thinks the game might've been better if Kojima committed to that idea, like, that scene on the bridge where Pliskin (= Liquid's voice?) confronts Solidus (= Solid Snake's voice?) would've been super mind-bending and totally surreal. It really feels like that scene was written with this concept in mind.
It's kinda hilarious how David Hayter said he's glad the Liquid Snake voice idea didn't get used for Solid Snake because he would have had a LOT fewer lines in this game haha.
Weren't they also thinking about making "Pliskin" blonde? Would've been extra trippy lol
29:30 the sniping is way easier if you lay down before equipping the sniper rifle, like how the first game made you lie down automatically. Much less shaking even without the drugs
40:36 he was listening to music. that's why he was the only one left aboard Big Shell, probably didn't hear evacuation message, also he wouldn't hear your gunfire even without supressor or any other sound-related mechanics. there was also one soldier like that on Tanker 2 years ago
51:33 Top 10 hardest moments in videogames, immediately proceeded by another one 52:16
God I love Otacon's growth over the course of this series and Solid Snake is the coolest guy to ever exist
According to the wiki, Emma Emmerich is 18 years old, born circa 1991
isent the big shell incident take place around 2007 on the timeline? if so she should be 16 (just from reading on the wiki timeline of MGS series)
@@BloodKitten_ The tanker is 2007, and the Big Shell is 2009
so, this is a bit of fun/creepy fact? couldent post it on last video due to how it is.
kojima, wanted originally to have emma bleed from her crutch while underwater, wich would lead to riden asking where she is hurt, only for her to deflect it and say she is fine, and later when stabbed by vamp, she would say she is fine, it's just her period....
you can imagine why it hasent passed but hey, kojima have some radical ideas alongside the good ones.
19:33 The controls when pushed up against a wall might just be the biggest mechanical flaw in a game which already sometimes has some awkward controls. It doesn't necessarily show itself well just on video, but anyone who's played the game knows how awkward it is when the camera switches angles and you suddenly have to hold some random direction in order to stay pushed against the wall or move left or right.
Yep, Hal is a victim of abuse
It's sad that a lot of people seem to overlook that part, and just blame Otacon. It wasn't just "an affair", this boy was very much groomed and assaulted.
Huey deserved everything that came to him, if not more
Yes, of life in general honestly.
@@datguyuno98 Absolutely. That rat bastard.
@@loco_logicwho blames Otocon irl?
56:40 did anyone in the history of gaming ever answer no to the question of if they want to save or not
Yeah
Yes, you gotta get that FOXHOUND rank by any means necessary
@@datguyuno98 Big Boss rank: This isn't interesting.
@@NicoTheCinderace No Traces: I WANT SOME MORE
tons of people. Speed runners, getting higher rank, ect.
Usually they look for the latest downed enemy, so if no one is there/there's only sleeping enemies, it won't cause an alert.
The fact that you played the whole game without ever knowing you could zoom until the last few minutes is hilarious (although a pity, sniping is very enjoyable in this game, the tranq sniper is my fave to get rid of enemies) .
I think you slightly misinterpreted the relationship between Hal and Emma. They were very close but I don't think they were in love. Maybe Emma had a crush, but she was a child when they separated, and during MGS2 she's still only 16 (Hal is in his thirties during MGS2). Otacon's step-mother clearly abused him (as he was probably a minor and impressionable) when he was still a teen, but he thinks it's his fault because that's how children/teens in this position interpret it.
13:00 trying to fail the mission as hard as possible 😂😂😂
Alright and after all of this, the _next_ episode is titled "Wtf"?!
I'm in for a treat :D
Tip for future games mostly: when using the sniper, lie down to not shake so much
From this point on starts the mindfuck of metal gear solid 2, full razor focus attention required for the godlike Kojima writing
"Genius Kojumbo"
Welonz/Raiden proving to be the world’s worst bodyguard 💀
27:50 they're not eating rations, you hit them in the right arm so they aren't able to hold AKs anymore, after that I think they reach for pistols or bandages
29:09 that one was using binoculars to locate the sniper ^^
Thermal Goggles are OP
Now the real mind blowing stuff is coming up
> Is this game possible to finish without killing people?
> Shoots literally everyone lethally, including Snake.
40:35 C'mon Welonz! He's rockin out! : )
Jammin' on his walkman.
5:20 all this blood almost makes this look a horror game
YaY! Trauma Bird!
10:03 It is possible, but very hard.
Harder than no Tranq is beating the game and earning Big Boss rank.
Harder than getting Big Boss rank is earning the "no traces" bonus.
And doing all that at the highest possible difficulty (which isn't even shown until you've beaten the game on extreme) makes MGS games about as hard as any Dark Souls no-hit run :D
Having played both MGS and Souls, I would argue the finesse required to get through any MGS without alerts/takedowns makes that *WAY* harder. People who can speedrun stealth games perfectly are a special breed, man.
@@Roronoa2zoro I played all souls-like and MGS as well and for me personally perfect stealth is much easier than no-hit. I think that's because MGS is all about learning patterns and if you remember it all you can just run through easily, souls also needs you to have high reflexes and reaction speed (the later ones at least) which I'm pretty bad at hahah
Can’t. Wait for episode 11
5 min in and it is already a blood bath.
Not tranquilizing anyone is completely possible, but very hard.
Most MGS enthusiasts will do anything for the perfect no kills and no alerts playthrough, not to brag but I've done it a few times myself 😅
13:00 You can't seriously claim the whole sequence was just an accident
33:15 Self-imposed challenge again
55:35 Overload, but that's only the beginning
one thing this scene with Vamp always makes me wonder about is: was it really a stab wound?
Snake says that through the Codec after checking but Raiden never gets to see it.
blood stains appear on Emma's front and back which would make sense for a sniper bullet that goes extremely fast rather than a knife.
This can be indicating that in fact it was Raiden who shot her but Snake pinned it on Vamp so Raiden wouldn't blame himself and deliver the virus on time. And Raiden would likely believe it since throughout the game he is shown as a bit of an egoist so he probably wouldn't even consider he misfired. That's my interpretation of the scene, curious if anyone else sees it that way.
The titular 'Ferrous Cog' is gonna show up, get your pogs ready lads!
LOL for the record Emma is 18. Since Welonz sounded disappointed not finding out herself.
But yeah. Pretty sad part. :( Otacon loses another woman in his life. He's a pretty tragic person in this game series. As are most characters tbh.
I fucking love Otacon
Fun fact: If you use a Directional Microphone, when Emma is out of vision you can hear she Has a funny conversation with one of the soldiers.
Nice acrltion and Next im surę IT will be better (scizors) :D
Strap yourself in Welonz... Things are about to get crazy...
Something happened to me last Thursday when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go - I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky, to the east!
42:37 Arsenal is about to be activated so they are searching for a way out before Big Shell is completely flooded. Lower levels most likely already are or they wouldn't be out in the open like this
Welonz, you mentioned not knowing how Raiden was when you started playing as him. Out of curiosity, who did you think the guy with the sword and SOCOM at the end screen of your MGS2 videos was?
Vamp appears
Emma: "Hey, You're not sparkly at all!"
Snake: "Its no good, I cant do it!"
Raiden: "I can."
Ka-Bam!
Vamp: "AAAAAAAA! See you in 5 years!"
Proceeds to drown.
WOOOo yeah, what a rollercoaster. Yeah Octacon, poor guy. He was taken advantage of as a kid and blames himself for everyone dying around hi. Haunted by the things he never got to say or do with one of the few people he had left.
Some slightly strange and kind of fun Trivia, in the recently after decades translated journal of Hideo Kojima. Apparently he wanted Emma to be on her menstural cycle...during the game. For potential comedy.
Honestly it would have made sense as an explaination of why she had trouble walking..and her attitude. Girl heard explosions, had to face her trauma and fear of bugs, get shot at and everything else.
I wouldn't be able to walk either.
I think the romantic angle could’ve been left out, it doesn’t add anything. But otherwise great storyline with Emma.
I wish we could’ve gotten more of them making up to each other
❤👓🐍❤

ah, wonderful. things are tied up nicely. now, commence the brain melt XDXDXD
