Kinosaki was the highlight of our trip! BIG tip is to buy your tickets BEFORE! We got to the station about 45mins early to get our tickets to Kinosaki, and they stopped selling them after a certain time for that day. We had to go to the conductor and explain the situation and they were very nice about it, saying that we could sit anywhere as long as we move if it's already been assigned (we also had JR pass, so that helped a lot).

Hi! Thank you for the comment. Regrettably I have never been to Takayama but I'd love to visit some day. Large holiday periods such as Golden Week from the end of April to 5 or 6 May and Obon in mid-August can be very crowded and should be avoided at these times. I think Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go could be an alternative.😊
