    I know many come to TH-cam to DIY. I give you a BIG thumbs up on explaining the process and the respirator. I would like to know more about how to find environmental cleanup companies. I don’t know a lot about the processes so more info on what questions to asks is very helpful. I am shocked by the expanse. I did not know the EPA had guidelines, this is helpful. I thought it was state by state. I have a abandoned house with water damage with insulation on the floor so I need an expert to come in. Thinks for having the courage to talk about this issue. We all need more education on this

    I followed advice from a buddy in our local pipe fitters union and just removed it myself. P100 mask, long gloves, disposable body suit. Connect garden hose, use mist setting, and soak it all down. Keep a large garbage can under work area, and as it becomes saturated it will break and easily fall into can lined with a contractor bag with no dust. Just keep it all wet, keep the hose in hand as you go. Seal bags wet and move on. For residual sticky stuff on pipe, do another pass- keep it very wet. Scrap pipe with file or rasp to turn it to residual into mud and wash into garbage or wipe down with disposable clothe and throw in can, and repeat. Don't let muddy residue drop on ground where it can dry and create dust later. Just be smart, and be careful. Words to live by.
    I clean my basement in 2 hours. Sure beats a an $8000 abatement job.

    I’ve done quite a bit of work in refineries and chemical plants where you have to be clean-shaven to use a respirator or supplied air. Having facial hair disrupts the seal around the mask and you are still getting unfiltered air whether you realize it or not. Not trying to be a jerk just food for thought.

      Thank you for this important advice! Especially when removing asbestos on one's own, it is important to strictly adhere to the applicable regulations and recommendations regarding occupational safety. Otherwise you may endanger your own health and that of your fellow human beings.
      Particularly in the case of renovation and refurbishment work, the following therefore applies: Exercise the greatest caution and play it safe! Even a small material sample is sufficient to determine in a professional test procedure whether a suspicious material contains asbestos. If the commissioned analysis confirms the suspicion of asbestos, have any work on it carried out exclusively by service providers with the necessary certificate of competence. This is the only way you can be sure that there will be no accidental contamination of your living space or clothing with asbestos fibers. If you want to know more about possible locations of asbestos in your home, feel free to visit our interactive asbestos house: www.crb-gmbh.com/en/interactive-graphic

    Very helpful video - thanks! What do you do with the plastic/tape at the end of the asbestos insulation where there is just bare pipe? Will the heat from the pipe melt the plastic or tape? Also, where the pipe is exposed, what should I use to insulate the pipe?

    • @inspectordaggett
      @inspectordaggett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great Question. You have to use a thick mil plastic and a good quality tape. Reinforced packing tape is a good option.
      As far as exposed pipe there are a few options available from a fabric based insulation, cordage or foam insulation. Any of those are adequate.

    Question for you: I had old vented wall furnaces (gas powered heaters) in a condo I live in. The pipes for the venting are asbestos. When one of the old heaters were removed the part of the pipe connected to the pipe broke off. What is the best way to seal where it's broken? These pipes are recessed into the wall and will soon be covered up permanently as I had a different kind of heating system put in. As I understand it the best thing to do is use oil paint to lock it in place. Does that sound correct? Thanks!

    • @paddyalex3094
      @paddyalex3094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I remove asbestos for a living, if it's in a damaged state the best thing to do is have it removed. If you can't get this done then look up serpi-coat, it's a specific paint for the encapsulation of asbestos, because of the type of asbestos this will be, it will require a licenced operative to remove this for you as it falls into the notifiable category. Look up licensed and none licensed works with asbestos to find out more.

    For whatever it may be worth. OSHA requires that your respirator for CLASS I Work (specifically abating thermal insulation materials) have its own supplied air. "Class I work with full-facepiece supplied air respirators operated in pressure-demand mode and equipped with an auxiliary positive-pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus when exposure levels exceed 1 f/cc as an 8-hour TWA." People should be really careful with this type of stuff. Just like some of comments below mentioned, if you miss something (like the facial hair not sealing the respirator) then this type of stuff can really negatively impact you.

      @@meandnature6452 good question. Where I'm from to be considered Friable it has to, when wet, crumble under hand pressure and contain greater than 1% asbestos. When you touch it, you should wet it down first to help lock the fibers down. Keep the touching to the absolute minimum you can to make the determination. If a small amount of fibers get released its not really a major deal. There are permissible exposure limits that are considered safe. Alot of people are actually exposed daily and they don't even know it. In America its still used in various products such as brake pads on cars. If your standing on a city street corner and cars and busses are stopping for traffic lights there is most likely asbestos fibers floating around in the air. When working in bigger cities we actually have to establish an alternative air quality standard because the existing air is already considered contaminated. The filter I use depends on what I am doing. There are specific filters for specific chemicals (acid, formaldehyde, aerosol, etc.) For this application I was using a pre filter and a multi gas 3M 6006. I use a different and appropriate filter for each different type of chemical (which can get expensive to have each filter type.)
      As far as the beard you are correct that it can diminish the effectiveness especially with chemical materials. For this application my beard was trimmed down and trimmed in for a better seal. I have had this mask fit tested at an OSHA approval testing facility (in Frankfort Illinois) and it passed the fitment test on me with the beard at the trim level it was for the video.
      My intent in this video was not to be a comprehensive reparator video. I may do one in the future and bring in a professional to discuss it in depth and all of the nuance that goes along with it.

      I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE REMOVAL AS DIY!
      If it gets to the point that you have to remove the asbestos I do not recommend doing that as a DIY. That process is the most dangerous as it pertains to exposure. You should at that point hire a professional EPA approved company to come in and do the work.
      They will "Bag" the area, creating a negative pressure situation and use very high quality HEPA filters (they call them scrubbers) and ensure that all fibers are collected. They also have all of the safety equipment and trained personnel to handle the situation.

      You encapsulate sections, remove the insulation and clean down to the bare pipe between the sections (ensuring everything remains encapsulated) and then cut the encapsulated sections apart. You have to keep the material wet with a spray bottle as you carefully remove it and collect / capture anything that drips or drops off as you are removing the insulation.

    All due respect, but you should NEVER even touch the stuff without a mask and gloves. And if you are going to touch it, you must wet it down, really soak it, drench it. Wet asbestos is relatively safe to work with. as long as it doesn't get airborne, you can safely remove it with water and gloves and tools. You scrape the wet stuff off, put it in a plastic bag, change gloves, put those gloves and the plastic bag in a second plastic bag and you are done. But touching dry asbestos for this video? Yikes. All you have to do now is rub your eye, touch your mouth/nose, or pick up a sandwich and eat it, and you have officially put enough asbestos into your system to kill you in another decade or two. Asbestosis takes as little as a spec, the size you can fit on a pin. I have had several co-workers die of it. Most worked with it a lot over the years, but a couple guys died of it and can't remember ever touching it, but knew it was on sites they'd worked. This stuff ought not to be touched. Really, wet it down first, please. ( I restore old houses for a living.)

    • @inspectordaggett
      @inspectordaggett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a 3M full face mask. I use a number of different filters on the mask depending on the material that i am potentially being exposed to. 3M has a great website that will help you make the choice on the proper filter and pre-filter to use. Another important note is that if you are going to be working with hazardous material to have your mask fit tested to ensure it is the proper size and is sealed to your face. I had mine tested at an OSHA approved facility by a professional in a battery of tests. One of which is testing your lung capacity and function to ensure you are healthy enough to use the mask.

      The cost of encapsulation as I showed will cost less than $200. Re-piping an entire exposed plumbing system would require a qualified pipe fitter, draining the system, having the water shutoff for an extended period of time and is the most invasive solution. The costs could easily reach $10,000.

    1) For a worker on a job, it is illegal and unsafe to use either of these respirators with a beard. Homeowners can do what they want, but they have to know that they will not be protected with that beard. 2) Both respirators he shows are for organic vapors, they is not effective or legal for asbestos dust, you need P100 or HEPA filter cartridges instead, 3) Using a lemon to test the fit is not great, there are better tests you can do just with your hands, which are still not sufficient, but better than a lemon.

      The EPA recommends encapsulation before removal as removal increases the probability of the material becoming friable (airborne) which is when the asbestos is hazardous. If the material is in good condition encapsulation should be the first choice. If it is deteriorated and falling apart then removal is indeed the choice.

    Wow, you really need to learn about respirators before giving advice. Those respirators you've shown are great for asbestos work, but both would need the proper filter. You've shown them with black cartridges which filter out organic vapors. They do not stop particulates, such as asbestos. For asbestos, you need purple or magenta filters (P100/N100/R100). Yes, you have a particulate PRE filter on one cartridge, but that is not rated for asbestos. And an orange or lemon for fit testing? Come on. You are putting people at risk with this nonsense.
