just bought a melanochrysum for my plant mom of a girlfriend, but need to keep it a surprise for a month, so i gotta take care of it for a moment! wish me luck!!
I realize that it takes months to make these propagation videos but I really appreciate you showing the progress of your props. Thank you for the great content 💚
I have such good success with propagating my melanochrysum, I put my success to using a prop box with a heat mat underneath grow light on top, planting the cuttings into perlite has been awesome as I have seen roots begin within three weeks and within 6-8 weeks they are ready to plant into their growing medium, I’m actually addicted to growing these. I live in a climate that has four seasons in one day with the least amount being summer so my indoor climate is cold during autumn/winter, we often have the fire going so it is dry so I have to have humidifiers going in the house for my plants regularly.
I love that your chanel is very open and you share your successes and failures, we need more content like yours that doesn't always show the picture perfect plant and also for us to appreciate the amount of work that goes into growing them before we bring them into our homes.
I'm obsessed with this plan from the first time I see it. So beautiful and elegant, the dark green, the velvet feeling, the veins of the leave are just so perfect. Such a beautiful thing! Still learning how grow them right.
I just got my first melano a couple months ago and it has TAKEN OFF. I knew that this plant was going to be one that started off small and would quickly overwhelm me with how large it is getting and so I thank you for making this video because I was not exactly sure how to go about trimming it back/taking cuttings from it. It’s quickly turning into one of my favorite houseplants though. I don’t want to speak for everyone in every region, but if you are looking for an easy to care for, beautiful, house plant, I would personally recommend this one.
Thank you so much for all your detailed and well-considered process! Please refrain from using toxic pesticides in general, not only for the environment, but for you. They are insidious! Be well, and thanks again for your wonderful videos!
I wish I had the climate that you have! The humidity there must be amazing for plants. Here in Texas is dry for the most part and humid only during summer. Which is not enough. Then my house is mostly dry except when I use my humidifier. So much work to keep humid loving plants for me.☹️ But I love your videos and plants! Beautiful!
I can hear the passion for plants in your voice and I can see it in your hands.I enjoy listening to your clear expiation for what you do.Learnt so much from you.Great job.
Your tried and tested methods. ....and practical tips ......the air layering tip was very useful Shows how much you care ...thank you for sharing . Your videos are really good and worth watching for any plant lover .🙏👍
Hi dear friend!! Today I transferred my propagated melano from spagnum to aroid soil and put it in a plastic bag to capture humidity as a new leaf unfurled. Your amazing videos are my guides for pretty much everything I do with my tropical plants!! Blessings and salutations from Greece!!!
I agree, My Melanochrysum also struggles a lot in growing and not doing well in my propagations. I just keep for myself now hehe It pushes new growth in the nodes of the mother plant but like yours, it dries out or produces significantly small leaves.
THANK YOU for all your efforts and time in creating a video. 6 months, wow. Just wanna let you know I SERIOUSLY appreciate and love your videos. Pls don’t stop doing this🙈 ✅ care, propagation, and complete updates- the best!
Thank you for this video, it saved me US$100, I planned to buy it tomorrow ( I saw it in my garden nursery today and I love it) but after seeing your video... I don't think I can keep it happy, my humidity even with the humidifier is around 50%... I can barely keep my syngonium happy....
I have a melanochrysum too, and it is so difficult for me. My humidity is very low. I hope you have better luck, I look forward to seeing what you learn so I can try it too.
What do you consider very low? I’m trying to figure out what to do with mine this winter (my first with this plant). Our house actually got below 10% in February! Because we have high ceilings I have trouble getting any space above 30. I’m hoping to hear a success story at that level for encouragement!

Finally, Melanochrysum. I was asked to my self why Sean never filming his Melano. Now it just answered. I always using moss for Melano propagation, but it didn't make it at all. After watching your video, it make sense why my top cutting is not working, because they don't have enough roots #LeafToRootRatio. Since your top cutting succeed in water propagation, I will try it. Thanks Sean buat pencerahannya pagi ini.
Great video! Bevor I am buying again stupid stuff (horrible monstera variegata leaf), what is important when buying a melanochrysum cutting? Thank you very much and have a nice day!
Nice video, u put a lot of time in it👍🏻...i have 2 melano .. I relies it that plant that just propagate will grow more faster in grow light ( red blue light) and with humidifier ... i buy pink princess that just cut in really small leaf in sphagnum moss media... i just think it never gonna make it but when i put in grow light and humidifier the growth just blown my mind 😂😂😂 it like 2 weeks and it already put new leaf ... and not just pink princess but also my propagate plowmani even alocasia .. so i think grow light ( red and blue) and humidifier is so soft that so good for propagate plant ....
Noted Tip again. If plant is happy, dont repot it. Wish that this video has come out before I repotted my Monstera Albo few months back. Not your fault and sorry for saying it in this Melanochrysum video. 😅 Now it is struggling. I am trying to air layer it like what you taught in a lot of the videos and it seems to be stabilising. Still need to thank you for the air layer tip. 🙇♂️

Thank you for all the hard work you put in all your videos. Really appreciate it. In your video I saw your Lupinum . Can you share some care tips on that cause all my leaves unfurl damaged and torn. I don't know why. There are not pest damage visible.
i like listening to your video. i like that you are explaining everything that you had in mind for the plant. well explained too for me, thank you c: good video
new shoot/leaf of my melanochrysum died before even unfurling and it's still inside its cataphyl now. I don't know if I should cut or just wait till new growth comes out... your plants are lovely, by the way. Thanks for sharing
I live in South Africa. Nelspruit. It gets very humid in summer. I have tried all sorts of propagation. The best one for me is to put your cuttings directly into your potting mix and then keep your eye on your cutting, keeping it moist and pest free. You don't get as much rotting and die off. If a cutting is not going to make it, it will die soon after propagation.
This is perfect! I’m just about to need to chop my melano. He’s outgrowing his space. But I’m nervous to cut him & reset the leaf size. They’ve finally started getting fairly large, but could be so much bigger. Hopefully I won’t be starting from scratch after cutting him Edit - Now that I’ve watched the whole video, I’m even more nervous to cut 😬
Your videos are so helpful! I love that you film the progress over time so we can see the outcome. I have a little dilemma, maybe you or someone can help?: I am trying to rehab a Melano that I had shipped about 5 months ago. It did not acclimate well and lost all its leaves within a couple weeks of arriving. The roots were still healthy (albeit kinda small) so I stuck the now naked stem in sphagnum moss and put it outside (I live in an area with a very warm, humid climate). It’s growing leaves but they’re very small, not even half the size the leaves were when I got it a few months back. It gets bright indirect sun (under a covered porch that receives good morning sun and afternoon shade) and it gets Liquidirt occasionally. How do I get the leaves to grow bigger?
It does take a bit of time to get bigger leaves. As side shoots usually revert to a much smaller age. But I would imagine that you got a few plants out of this? You seem to be caring for it right, do watch for spidermites. And finally just give it time... perhaps around a year to see decent sized leaves
@@onlyplants thank you! These are side shoots, so I guess it’s normal. I’ll just be more patient. 🙂 I think I was comparing my regrowth to photos I was seeing other people post of their new growth from their propagations and getting confused as to why mine was so small. I'm having problems to make the new leaves get bigger. The plant don't climb in the pole e the air is too dry where I live. :( I bought a humidifier to help.
The browning in every shoot/unfurling might be because of misting, wet leaves can help the humidity but some bacteria's prefer to stay at cool and wet environment they might stay for too long and can rot those unfurling leaves. this applied different compare to wild because wild/natural habitat is more wide and spcae tallows to circulate air widely and properly. Btw I like all your videos. Goodluck I hope someday I can have plants like yous
Ooh gorgeous 😯 Can you make a video elaborating your preventative fungicidal treatments?? I live in a similar subtropical climate and monsoons means fungus all over the soil in some of my pots 😅
@@onlyplants oh Thank you! I thought it looked like an aglaonema but I have never seen one with blue! I am going back into your video history to see if you have a video on it, if you do not please show it off one day. :-)
cutting the top , will eventually generates bigger leaves? or everything re-start from begining with small ones? i was wondering how my melano will shoot bigger leaves . Should i attach it to a 1 kilometer moss mole to see that happens? ROFL
I never ever measure light haha but yea it is very subjective. For someone living in low lit apartment their definition of medium light will be entirely different. But these guys are actually adaptible, ive seen them grow in many many conditions in my nursery tours. The key may be to acclimatize slowly if there are sudden changes in light levels, and to give it ad bright as possible light to encourage better growth
I guess I gotta move mine to another spot. Hopefully she’ll thrive with winter ending………. Looking forward to chop her up share with my family if all goes well 😂
Hi Sean do you recommend using dry moss pole for the Melanochrysum to climb up on or does it have to be moist like the sphagnum moss pole? Everyone in my country creates their own sphagnum moss pole but it just means I have to make one up. The dry one looks nicer actually for me cuz it resembles the Tree effect because a Tree is usually Dry? Cheers hope it makes sense lol
I have my cuttings bought online but it's been 2 months and there's just roots no node eyes yet...I hope I could get the same beauty as yours soon.. Those transparent pots looks amazing.. where did you get those again?
I got them on tokopedia, a local online marketplace. Try searching for it in your local online store under “clear pot” “translucent pot” “transparent pot” as keywords there should be lots of options 😀
60% should be ok for it to survive, but not be happy. There are other factors outside of humidity that are more important. Such as light, watering, and keeping it pest-free. I have a feeling spidermites would love your plant in those conditions so do be a bit vigilant 😀
@@onlyplants wow. How can I prevent spider mite? Right now I spray with neem oil and soap solution every two weeks. Trying to avoid chemicals cause I have a dog and cat. Maybe I really need the insecticide they sell in store
House plants here in Pakistan are sold in heavy clay soil which I dislike. What would you suggest? Repot them using a more light way compost or just leave it and hope it does well?
If its doing well I would leave them be but if you are struggling with them, definitely repot them. Its actually quite stressful for plants to get a full repot 😀
Could be fungus (maybe fungus rust) or bacteria. Usually caused by a stressed plant especially after being moved. Mau also be spidermites or root rot 😅 its best to rule out these possibilities one at a time
@@onlyplants thanks! I've decided to propagate it so I can see if it's the mites or the fungal. Your vid gave me courage hahaha. Roots seem OK. Hoping for the best :)
Great video! I have a question? I recently had to transplant my Melano to Spag Moss because of root rot in soil. Now that I have it in Spag Moss I have decided to permanently just leave my Melano in Spag. How do I water it now? Do I saturate it with water by soaking everything form too to bottom by pouring water On top? Or do I just spray with my water bottle? If I am just spraying misting into the Spag than how much do I mist? I am so confused? Hope I can help….thank you.
Oooh noo dont saturate sphagnum moss ever. Ive killed many plants this way… keep the moss fluffy, airy, and lightly humid. I achieve this my misting the top of the moss lightly everyday. But I also use translucent pots for these, so I can see if the bottom is dry. Moss can get severely dry in the bottom of a pot if you only water the top a little bit.
@@onlyplants Thank you so much. Yes. I have them in translucent pots. You mentioned you mist the top, but how do I get to the bottom of How do I get moisture down to the bottom and up to the half way mark if I am only misting the top part only. What is a good sign that I can tell it is time to mist again? Do you wait until the top part or half is dry? Or does the Melano always like to be moist in Spag Moss?
Do you have any idea what it could be when my Splendid (cross of Melano x Verrucosum) unfurls every single new leaf with some damage, f.e. some with a tiny spot on the edge missing (as if someone took a little bite lol), some with one or two tiny holes in the middle of the leaf etc.? I already checked for pests and there is none - and it's inside so definitely no animals disturbing it. Humidity is always at 60%.
Both melano and verru as pure species do that when they are not adapted to the new space. They will often fail to unfurl entirely even… giving them proper care and lots of time will remedy the problem usually. And treat it for pest regardless because both parentage are prone to spidermites.
Omg it’s so beautiful! I just got a tiny leaf cutting. When you get more juvenile plants, how many years does it take usually to get to a more mature form like your melano?
I’m having a hard time with this starter plant . I had three leaves, lost one , one is growing in but has been in the same stuck looking position for days. The other two leaves look crispy at the ends and I see like two little holes

That would be an aglaonema lotus delight. Hybridized in Indonesia by Sir Greg Hambali 😀
@@onlyplants oh Thank you! I thought it looked like an aglaonema but I have never seen one with blue! I am going back into your video history to see if you have a video on it, if you do not please show it off one day. :-)
This is really good Sean. I enjoyed this very much.
Is there another more natural way to deal with insects and pest?
Beneficial insects that feed on the pests is one, also neem oil is much more natural too. 😀
Thank you for another great video
😀
Amazing video
cutting the top , will eventually generates bigger leaves? or everything re-start from begining with small ones? i was wondering how my melano will shoot bigger leaves . Should i attach it to a 1 kilometer moss mole to see that happens? ROFL
Top cutting produce normal sized leaves
@@onlyplants so that means i will never get giant leaves since i have no space for it to grow higher :(
Did you measure your light? If feel that what you call medium indirect light is still brighter than what most people have.
Looking forward to chop her up share with my family if all goes well 😂
Masyaa Alloh...indahnya ...trims ilmunya...tp sayang sekali saya belum punya ....jd pengen punya...tp harganya mahaaal...😥😥😥😥
Iya lagi mahal dulu murah sekali padahal
Thank you for all the info
Hi Sean do you recommend using dry moss pole for the Melanochrysum to climb up on or does it have to be moist like the sphagnum moss pole?
Everyone in my country creates their own sphagnum moss pole but it just means I have to make one up. The dry one looks nicer actually for me cuz it resembles the Tree effect because a Tree is usually Dry?
Cheers hope it makes sense lol
They have to be moist most or the time. The idea is to mist the pole often 😀
@@onlyplants ah I will invest in Sphag and make my own then thanks
Very informative. Thank U
@@onlyplants thanks k think it's nice to use it for propagation..
Thank you for the video! That was very helpful!
❤️❤️
Please make a dedicated video for lupinum
I would love to but first Im trying to get mine to grow into its mature form, which is being a pain in the butt to do lol
@@onlyplants IKR, we are in the same battle 😂
I would love to see a monstera dubia video!!! Your videos are gospel to me! 🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙
Ooo Im about to cut up my dubia! Ill be sure to film it
Oh please! Mine is not loving me for some reason 😒
How much humidity does it need? I live in a dessert 20% and bought humidifier and it only went up to 60%
60% should be ok for it to survive, but not be happy.
Thank you for not being so greedy with your Melano 💚😁
🥰
@@onlyplants 🥰💚
thank You! We love Melanochrysum!
What's the difference between melanochrysum and gigas? Would gigas grow big leaves as this one?
Im not familiar with the gigas 😅 but they are more oval shaped and melano is more heart shaped I think. Both can get big.
I have one melano with rust colored patches which eventually took over the entire leaf. Would you happen to know what that is?
Hello Sean … that’s cool 😎 thanks for sharing 🧤👒🦘🐨🇦🇺🙌🌱
@@onlyplants Thanks a lot for the tip. Ordered some of those pest granules that you always use and will try if that helps.
Omg it’s so beautiful! I just got a tiny leaf cutting. When you get more juvenile plants, how many years does it take usually to get to a more mature form like your melano?
Depends on your care. In high humidity, good light, and great watering and pest control maybe 4-5 years to reach monster size
I’m having a hard time with this starter plant . I had three leaves, lost one , one is growing in but has been in the same stuck looking position for days. The other two leaves look crispy at the ends and I see like two little holes
Try water propagating single nodes and try again. They are easier to propagate than to rehabilitate.
@@onlyplants thank you
Wow love your Melano ...
Can I make a random comment? I LOVE your tshirt! Where did you get it from?
Thank youu I think its just Pull&Bear brand haha
@@onlyplants ah, thank you! love your channel & content my friend - keep up all the amazing work. going to buy my first Anthurium Clarinervium :)
