    This man has taught me more in almost 15 minutes then my lazy instructors have going on three weeks at the Cdl school I'm at. They give us no instruction to what we are dealing with and just throw us to the wolves when we get behind the wheel then get mad if the gears grind or we stall out. I would of went to your school in a heartbeat if I would of known about your school earlier.

      Pray4us! Thank you for taking the time to comment. If you'd like to learn double clutching, this video has helped many truck driver students: th-cam.com/video/z6AKaBeRNU8/w-d-xo.html. Hope you aren't paying an arm and a leg at that crappy school, brother.

      I’m seeing a lot of people complain about this its even my complaint I wonder why they don’t teach us knowing we will be alone eventually doing this. I should not have to come to TH-cam to learn this outside of the truck.

    Great video! When I started driving trucks, guys I rode with just told me do whatever feels most comfortable to me. And I always just saw them floating, so I managed to pick it up pretty quick. Managed to get a CDL evaluator at the DMV who didn't seem to care that I floated the whole time. And watching this video helped with some of the finer details that you may not even think about. Like it's easy to panic when you are a newer driver floating, and it doesn't go into the desired gear right away. Thank You!

    Thanks so much. Way easier to learn watching your video than during the pressure on the road with the school ( left nameless) . Well explained too, some of us need the explanation of the mechanics that are taking place as well as the procedure so it all makes sense. I know I'll pass my road test and maneuvers this time. I've seen all your videos and they are outstanding to learn this trade by.

    When I went to driving school 45 years ago, they taught your Hybrid Shifting method. I thought it was weird, and since I always like to think out of the box, I modified this method. I take it out of gear without the clutch, and clutch it into gear. I call it partial clutching, and I always do this on a new truck that I am not familiar with, for about the first week. From then on I float all shifts. I tell my students that the secret is to get the engine to neither be accelerating or de-accelerating. Just in the middle, the transmission will get loose, and it will fall out of gear. Great video !

      Partial clutching is how I'm currently being taught as a beginner!( And some floating.) Makes sense than hybrid because its easier to float to neutral, but going into gear the clutch helps you find the gate.

      flimsyjimnz You and I are on the same page on this one. Just make sure when you float it out of gear, you are not forcing it out. Gentle pressure and good throttle control is the name of the game. Good luck !

    Wow it was awesome how they applied all the techniques at the end, double clutch, hydrib and floating!!! I was always wondering if it was possible to downshift floating gears and thanks to this video now I know!!! Can't wait to apply the hybrid as well!!! I just recently got my CDL license but I was only taught how to double clutch and was told about floating gears but like I said I didn't know you could float gears to downshift and didn't even know about hybrid shifting!!! Awesome video!! This helps a lot for us beginners because I'm sure employers look for this kind of knowledge on potential employees!

      Hybrid shifting is the method I use to introduce some of my (graduated) students to floating. Think of hybrid shifting as a baby step on your way to floating gears. Thank you for watching and commenting, brother.

    This is a great video. Better than anything else that I have found. I am still seeking one answer though.
    I just finished CDL and was taught to float when upshifting and use the hybrid when down shifting. My question is regarding use of the jake brake when downshifting. Assuming it is engaged, how do I properly downshift? Do I need to play with my throttle to disengage the jake during my shift?
    Thanks.

  • @danielwhite6838
    @danielwhite6838 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gear shifting is designed to the RPM of the engine and the speed of the truck. Old school instructors called it the V the high and low RPM to shift at that is the reason there is a tachometer in every truck. Floating gears can be very good but no transmission manufacture will recommend floating gears. The more you know about your equipment will make a more professional operator in every.

    Great instructional videos; these are organized, informative, camera work tracks the action, ...can't say enough good things.
    Question regarding "shallow" double-clutching - From watching your various videos, I think I understand the function and use of the 2 air actuated switches on the gear shift (Range selector and Splitter) and that you can pre-switch these in anticipation of the next gear (they seem to actuate with the transmission once in neutral), I also understand that only by depressing the clutch fully are you able to engage the clutch brake and engage a gear when totally stopped (non-synch transmission) but that you can float gears while moving and never use the clutch. So, what actually happens during those 2-3" shallow clutch movements that help the shift process from one gear to the next? What exactly do "shallow" clutch movements do with the transmission (vs deep clutch to the floor for the initial start from a stop) when double-clutching...they don't seem to do anything since you can float gears, make Range changes, and select Splitter choices, all without use of the clutch? Thanks for all you do!

    Awesome tutorial! When downshifting, what RPM do you start at and what do you REV the engine up to?

    • @Bendigo1
      @Bendigo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the engine and transmission. On most standard semi trucks, with 400 to 500 hp. And 10 spd transmission, usually wait until 900ish rpm then rev up to 1400ish rpm. On 13 or 18 spd star same around 900 or 1000 rpm then rev up to 1300 to 1400 rpm. 10 spds are usually around 500 rpm difference 13 and 18 are usually around 300 rpm difference while splitting and 600 without splitting.

    Great tutorial, really explains things neatly. My new employer is making me FLOAT gears, and will not let me double-clutch. He says that I'm ruining the clutch (by using it) and it making me float gears. It's nearly the craziest thing I've ever heard. Why would the manufacturer design it to be double-clutched and even include double-clutching instructions in the Owner's Manual if it were harmful to the clutch?! I may need a new job...

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There is a reason why the manufacturer recommends double clutching. The more the driver uses the clutch, the quicker the clutch will fail (this takes a long time). When the clutch fails, the manufacturer is likely to make more money when the repair is made. Pretty lame, huh? Money, money, money...

      It's all in the pedal driver, if you're having trouble floating try watching your tachometer till you get the feel for the truck, 4 to 500 rpm between gears. For instance if you're turning 1700 & wanna upshift you'll fall back in about 12 to 1300 rpm same with downshifts2if you're turning 1300 rpm gently put it in neutral bring your rpm up to around 1700 & gently slide it into the next lower gear.

      @@jazzlives Interesting that you mention that because I just finished watching a video that featured the national service manager for Eaton transmissions, and he said that you must absolutely never float gears with an Eaton, that you must ALWAYS double clutch. I don't drive a truck, but I know enough to know that ain't what's happening in the real world! lol.

      Sir, your videos are pretty good but your ideas about FLOATING are WRONG. Don't be a fool with the "they just want to make money" learn the truth...see what the engineers say....not the old fool who " we always did it that way". When pulling OUT during floating you damage the transmission....YES, only a little at a time, but it does damage it. Floating is for LAZY drivers. Please post more RESPONSIBLY.

    I have 3 quick questions
    1. When double clutching; do you clutch it at the EXACT time you shift everything or just slightly before the neutral shift and again slightly before the gear shift?
    2.What is the ideal RPM when you hybrid clutch to neutral then go straight to the next gear.
    (also do you rev the engine after going into neutral?)
    3. What is the ideal RPM when floating from one gear to the next?
    thank you

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Push the clutch and move the shifter at the same time. This works best if you remove the free play from the clutch pedal. Resting your foot on the pedal will accomplish this.
      2. Hybrid shifting is double clutching without the second clutch. You can shift at any RPM, if you know how to do so. For the purpose of learning, upshift at 1500 and downshift at 1000. Rev the engine in neutral every time you downshift. Rev the engine when upshifting only if you miss your gear.
      3. The RPMs associated with floating gears are the same as the RPMs for double clutching and hybrid shifting. If you upshift at 1500, you should be in your next gear before the needle reaches 1000. If you upshift at 1200, you should shift a little faster because you are still trying to beat the needle to 1000 (but you have less time).
      Does that help, n/a?

    • @dc-nm9jo
      @dc-nm9jo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that does help a lot and thank you for your quick response. I understand that you shouldn't hybrid shift or float for the CDL test but if it's safe to do and extends the life of a clutch then what exactly does the person giving the test have a problem with it?
      One more question, If you are downshifting at 1000 RPM on the hybrid shift but revving the engine in neutral then what RPM are you trying to get to? Same for floating downshifting, what is the ideal RPM for that?
      Sorry for all of the amateur questions, I will be starting CDL school in December and I would like a head start before I go to prevent myself from looking like a fool

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy! The person giving the test is subject to disciplinary action by the state. So, the tester must follow the state's rules. Why does the state want you to double clutch? Here in Colorado, the language of the test states that the student must be 'proficient' at shifting. Our students do not (technically) have to double clutch, but we teach them to do so anyway. Double clutching helps with the timing of the shift. It takes a little longer to shift gears when double clutching. That decrease helps students establish the correct rhythm. It's the same rhythm (or pace) you'll use when hybrid shifting and/or floating. Additionally, if you ever become a driver trainer, it's smart to know how to teach shifting more than one way as each student is different.
      You may want to watch our other shifting video. It talks about RPMs in detail. See it here: th-cam.com/video/z6AKaBeRNU8/w-d-xo.html . You want to rev the engine to the sweet spot, 1000-1500. The video has helped many people.

    Sir, I'm trying to get my CDL Class A and I'm looking forward to enroll in your school soon. I've been watching most of your videos here in YT, and I think you guys are very professional and willing to help students to pass their CDL test. According to your website, you do one-on-one training, correct? But I'll take the whole course of Class A for continous 3 to 4 weeks, whatever is your requirement for the entire course. Even though, I live here in Florida, I am willing to travel to Colorado by car, as long as it's all worth the trip...:)

    Hybrid Shifting, normally, we would do that if we jammed the gear, and it won't go back in the next up or down, and would use the clutch to set the gear into position. Or if we can't release the gear forwards. It is a short cut, to help when we get a shift wrong say on a hill, when your loaded and the truck slows to fast for the Sync to Mesh. And by the way, Smack smack... your riding the clutch still. Bad habits are hard to break, but you need to keep the clutch free....

      Good for you, Anita! Eventually, you won't have to use the sweet spot, visually. Soon, you'll be hearing the correct engine RPMs instead of relying on the RPM gauge. Thank you for watching and commenting.

      CDL College, LLC I’ve been driving almost two years but sadly was trained in an automatic and been driving an automatic till only a month ago. For 3 days I drove a freightliner 10 speed which was easier to float since it was at higher rpms, but I got a Kw t680 now and it’s been difficult floating from 2-5 because it shifts at around 1100 to 1300 rpms. It’s harder to hear the engine too so I’ve been messing up a lot. How long will it take me you think or did it take you till you were able to listen and not look? Thanks

    • @Cdlcollege
      @Cdlcollege  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shifting through the low range gears can be difficult, especially when you're loaded. Keeping your RPMs low should help. Start in 2nd gear and shift at 800RPMs. In 3rd, shift at 900. 4th, 1000. It's easier to shift at lower RPMs. Raise your RPMs a bit for each subsequent gear. Thanks, vandals145.
