  • One of our favorite things is exploring and when you pair that with practicing my new photography hobby, well its a magical combination for Snippet 15. Even though I start off this video saying that this is our second photo tutorial... it didn't quite turn out like a tutorial, and that is okay! I think it's easy to focus on the steps it takes to learn something new -- like learning the grammar of a new language, or in this case the right f-stop/shutter speed for the light or how to focus precisely -- however the most important part of learning something new is PRACTICE!
    You aren't going to become a flexible yogi overnight or the next Picasso by watching one youtube tutorial. It takes hours upon hours of consistent practice to master anything. So we thought that sharing another video with me taking photos and Lou giving me tips and tricks along the way would be the perfect thing to inspire you to get out and practice whatever you are trying to learn right now!! For example, this time around we learned that a 160 film ISO is a little slow for shooting in the woods, and that it's really hard to capture the beauty of a hiking trail in front of you because it never seems to look quite as good as when you're there.
    And with that - the new weekly description question for those of you who are still reading :) What skills/hobbies are you working on right now? What is the best way you've found to keep practicing the things you want to improve on?
    Thank you for watching, for reading, and for joining us here. It means the world to Lou and I to connect with each of you and we're so grateful for your continued support.

    Try overexposing the film one stop (or even two stops!). You'll get better colour rendition (instead of those blues/greens) and skin tones also seem to "glow" when overexposed, specially with kodak portra. Although you'll probably need a faster ISO.
    Also, one of the best tips I had when learning photography, was learning to see the light. You can do that all the time, just by looking at someones face and trying to determine what is the main light source, and if its hard light (sharp shadows and lots of contrast) or soft light (not very defined shadows and usually a lower contrast)
    Great video as always!! Big fan of you!

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow alonso, thank you so much for these tips. We've been shooting on aperture priority, but I think switching over to full manual is how i'm going to tackle the next roll (just got to get a light meter app on my phone) Cant wait to see how the film looks a bit over exposed / that "glow" sounds so lovely.
      Ill definitely focus on light for the next roll - for example the photo i took of lou in the tree was a bit silly to take since it was so backlit. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our videos and engage with them like this. Your comments are so appreciated :)

    • @alogh
      @alogh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      An easier way to overexpose is to set the ISO to 200 if you're shooting at 400 (or 100 if you're shooting at 200 and so on). And always spot meter (with the phone app) your subject's face!
      Hope you upload the results :D

    Love the video's of you're channel. Really relax to watch. But I wanne to say that the color of the photo's are off, this is caused by the scanner. Also try to shoot portra one stop over and if you in an environment like this try to shoot Ektar 100. The colors green and blue are so much better and if you over expose it one stop the skin tone are great.
    Keep it up!

    HI,
    I watched your first video and now the 2nd one on film cmera. I am fascinated why young people are thrilled with using film cameras. When I was younger I couldn't afford a camera like Canon A1 or AE1 and now they are dirt cheap. I enjoyed watching both of your videos, after the first one I got myself a quality film body plus a few high quality lenses. The images are really good comparatively and the look is different from digital images.
    Watching this video I think your photo taking techniques can be improved and you can easily improved by applied what you learned from taking images from digital camera by using them in manual/aperture/shutter priority mode and how to control the exposure.
    Looking forward to watching your next video. Cheers from down under.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! It seems like theres a ton of young people getting into film--I think partly because its possible now to get awesome old cameras like the A1 for a lot less money so in comparison to a really nice new digital camera its a good option, but also I think the experience is just so much more enjoyable, especially now that a lot of cell phones have really really good cameras it seems like it makes more sense to just get a nice cell with a camera and then have your second camera be a film camera because then yyou get to have the best of both worlds : ) Plus people just throw old film filters on their digital photos so why not just go back to the source!? Also thanks for the photography tips! We definitely have a LOT to learn : ) But thats part of the fun, right? Hope your having a good week!

We are also thinking of ordering a 10 pack soon because this roll was really fun to shoot and we are currently loving the portra look so there will be many more film videos coming soon! The cool thing about shooting film is after some time you will become more intuitive about how much light is available and what settings to select. You will look at a scene and think, "yeah, f11, 1/125 shutter speed", considering the ISO. It takes time, but it's a pretty cool skill to develop (no pun intended).
    Also, having a decent light meter doesn't hurt.

    Great video! If I may give some advice, some of the images look underexposed (blue colour cast). Portra 160 is probably too slow for a shadowy forest; you might want to try Portra 400 next time and set the meter to a half or even full stop compensation. Negative film reacts *much* better to over- than to underexposure.

We really appreciate all the support :) As for how I've learned on the Canon A-1 at the moment I'm still shooting in aperture priority, but I just downloaded a light meter app on my phone and definitely want to practice on the next roll shooting fully manual. Maybe we can make a video about the transition and see how it goes for me. Can't wait to hear how you film adventures go :)

    I bought my first film camera which is a Canon AE-1 Program yesterday! But then i was kinda bummed to find that there was a shutter squeak. I followed a tutorial online on how to fix it but my syringe was so much shorter, but i still tried to lubricate it. After lubricating it, the squeak was still audible so at the point I gave up and assembled it back. Literally a minute or two after i assembled it together, the squeak was gone! I was so proud of myself. Also the camera was $60, and in near mint condition which is a steal because AE-1 P easily goes for $100 Canadian and up. Thats my mildly interesting story haha

      Hahahah, thanks for that VERY interesting story!! We actually have a tiny bit of a shutter squeak so its great to know you can fix those yourself. It's so cool hearing peoples stories about finding beautiful old film cameras for cheap : ) I love just walking past all the old photography stores in berlin and looking through the windows at all the crazy old cameras they sell, most of which seem really cheap.

      Thanks so much! We use a Canon 24-105 f4 that Lou got second hand on KEH for very little : ) It's a pretty versatile lens, but its heavy, and its f4, and with a filter on it you get a nasty vignetting at 24mm, but overall its definitely a great option if you only want to bring one lens along, plus for filming its really nice to have the option of zooming in and out because it gives you a lot more camera moves to work with. As with all the lenses we use though we shoot entirely on manual focus--this one has auto focus but not rolling auto, plus rolling auto never really works so we've kind of just gone fully manual which was a lot harder at first but now its like second nature : ) Hope that helps!

    Hey guys, how do you get past the film not being vegan? I just started getting in to film and found out theirs animal products in the film. I thought maybe if I bought old film from people off eBay I wouldn't be directly causing a demand for film from companies. Or is there a vegan friendly film company? Thanks!

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Will, buying old film seems like a better bet, but then you have to worry about if its too old and won't work well anymore.. We've done a bit on research on the subject and it seems like there are really no alternatives in sight, especially for a normal 35mm camera.. To be honest, its a something we were told only after getting started with film from another vegan friend because like most people we didn't think there could be animals in film, but of course they find ways to sneak that stuff everywhere : ( Right now, we are kind of at the point where we just try not to shoot a ton of film wastefully; these videos make it seem like we're shooting a lot but we've really only shot about 15 rolls in the past year and a half. It's not a perfect solution but unfortunately there doesn't really seem like there is an alternative apart of course from not shooting film at all--but its important to know that a lot of hollywood films are still shot on film as well and thats also the same gelatin based stuff so going to the movies is technically not vegan in a lot of cases either... So yeah, that wasn't really an good answer to your question but right now we are at the point where we don't think that the small amount of gelatin used in film production is really a contributing factor to animal agriculture and while we would LOVE to find an alternative there doesn't seem to be one, so at this point in time we are going to continue exploring our new hobby. If, however, we ever get to the level of veganism where we don't consider it ethical to go to the movies, drive in cars with leather seats, fly on airplanes, or buy anything made with rubber or animal based glues, then we'd also be giving up film as well. Hope that helps a little! And thanks for the tough question! We've only heard that from 2 people so far so it must not be widely known..

    One of the nice things about shooting film is that you're forced to be more careful with each shot because you're limited in how many you can take, and see I love that so much because it forces me slow down, look around the world around me and think about it before I press the button, which helps me to appreciate more of my surroundings. And especially at a place like where you guys went? Psh, I'd get lost. So stinkin beautiful. Good job with the video guys!

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really love how it forces me to slow down, focus on the composure (though I''m still working on this - especially when i ask strangers to take their photo sometimes i get a little nervous and rush the experience which is too bad because i still need a bit of time to get situated - figure out lighting and focus and all that jazz) but overall it has been such a rewarding process getting to know our Canon A-1. Its even helped my digital photography skills too. Thank you so so much for your thoughtful comment :) It really feels surreal to us to interact with all these people who appreciate the same beauty in life that we do, so thank you so much for taking the time to comment!

    What's your favourite colour film to shoot with? I really hate kodak colour plus and thought Portra was the way to go but after seeing your video the photos looked too cold in temperature, very blue/green heavy.

    • @SAGGING_GUT
      @SAGGING_GUT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an error of scanning. Kodak Portra is an amazing film, but is designed for PORTRAits. I can assure you that the Negatives would not be cold.

      Yes, I have.
      Personally I like to expose at box speed, I find the colours too soft if shot at 80ASA. However, if I was to shoot an entire roll of Portraiture - then I would shoot at 80ASA.

    Part of why I love film is their distinct color...
    However I did not like Portra , it's too green-ish for me. An Uxi or Kodak Gold is better balanced IMHO.
    And I also love how you process your video for that film-y color and grain. Hope to see a tutorial on that subject :D

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah actually it's not too green - we didn't color correct this video correctly. we were still getting used to our scanner settings when we brought in the negatives. but i totally will tell Lou about Uxi and Kodak Gold and maybe we can try those out soon :) We definitely will include our color grading in a tutorial in the coming months so stay tuned!

    • @VuLamDang

      I don't know if they still have Uxi stock where you're, Uxi have been out of stock here in Vietnam for 1 or 2 years now. Nowaday I shoot mostly Kodak Gold, its color feel a little bit generic, but otherwise very well balance - it's the color people think of when they talk 'bout film color.

But we're going to be getting back into it soon - have a film shoot scheduled for sept 12 so stay tuned and i should have more answers for you in the coming weeks. - Dana

    So I've watched pretty much all of your photography videos. I found my dad's old Nikon em while helping my mom fix up our old house to sell. Just bought batteries and film today and can't wait to shoot. Can't believe I found fellow veg peeps while looking up camera tutorials :)

      Thanks for watching and commenting! These film ones take a lot longer to edit because the photographs are tricky to work with inside the editing program but we're really glad you liked it! There will be many more film videos in the near future : )

    Such an amazing place! I love the way the colors turn up in film photography. I have a Canon AE-1 Program and I know each time I take out, it os going to be special :) Another amazing video by the way!

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! We feel the exact same way about this camera : ) There's something about shooting film that makes you remember the actual experience of taking photos so much more for some reason, and then on top of that you can get these printed photos to look back on which is really special. It'll be even more fun in a couple years to look back on all these old rolls and then get to rewatch the videos as well. Hope your week is going well!
