Weirdly enough my intuition already told me to go for the sleeve first and exercise control through that. But then again I am a huge fan of O-soto-gari and for that the collar grip isn't all that necessary. I'm going to experiment with the conclusions of this video in my next randori.
Tremendous video. So many coaches out there say to "get a grip" but it's very difficult to throw someone with a lapel only grip. Not so much with a sleeve only grip.
I have telling been my students this principle for a while! I love this! Can't wait to share this with my students. Keep up the great work you are doing Mr. Stevens. Excellent and thank you again.
Thanks for all the content Travis! I really love your attention to the small details especially the points you made about movement in an ai-yotsu position. I would love to see a similar video covering details such as movement for kenka-yotsu!
Every day I am learning from you Travis👍🏽 Keep ongoing, i shared your channel to my judo team ... Kindly,We need exercises how to improve our grip Thank you
Hey thanks for the left sleeve suggestion. I had my first legit throw ever today in randori. I'm a white belt. I grabbed the left sleeve, pinned it to the guy's side and shuffled left. I fought for the lapel and got a hold near the neck. I waited for him to break my grip. Once he started I slid my hand behind the neck and went for ogoshi. He was surprised but he smiled at me.
This is great.... I was just about to request for you to make a video if possible about some basic principles in judo to not get thrown(If there are any that is.😂 )...and this video helped especially for beginners like me
Thank you for the great insight and tips Travis. It really stinks in easily the way you teach. I hope you don't mind me pimpin' Jimmy's gripping DVD 2.0 but it's the bible on the subject as far as I'm concerned. My wife bought it for me. I had his old one but because of the rule changes I guess he revised it. Appreciate the continuous content!!
Hey Travis, I just started Judo ( late in life at my current age of 47 ) here in Dallas Tx. a month ago. My question is this..what do you recommend for knee, hip and low back strengthening exercises to do at home. We don't have classes right now because of Covid-19, so anything to keep mobile is helpful. Thanks
The fact that we have access to this content, at home, for free is amazing. Love the channel, keep up the great work!
Thanks Adam! I'm happy to support the community!
0:30 RvR dont grab collar first…Tai otoshi, makikomi, seionage
1:00 RvR dont walk right, move left
1:55 RvR control sleeve first, then collar
Wish I knew this before.

This stuff is pure gold. Thanks for posting this Travis.
Your welcome! I’m glad you like the videos!

Yeah it can be hard coaches only have so much time. It’s important to make sure athlete and coach speak the same judo language?
Great tips and practical demonstration, especially in this time without judo - keeping learning. Thank you Mr Stevens.
Your very welcome!!

Great analysis!
I asked you why not grip the collar first to get control and this video was the perfect explanation, thanks!
I’m glad it answered your question!
Thank you Travis. Another great explanation

Super helpful! Would that grab the wrist first rule also apply to wrestling?
It really depends on how it's applied and the style of wrestling.
@@TravisStevensgrappling Thank you!

Rubber Duky, Try to make sure you join my live at home workout tonight at 8 pm EST. I'm going to be doing some of those exercises!
@@TravisStevensgrappling ---super, thank you. I will.
Could you make a kuzushi against taller guys or heavier guys with solid stance? Btw I'm a lefty and usually plays against righties.
You got it!!!
Hi Travis! Is this video a part of an instructional series? I would like to purchase it on Judo Fanatics :) Thanks!!!
Check out Jimmys Gripping 2.0 dvd
Oh I bought it last year :)
Nice!!!
I've tried this in the gym, and got caught on a single leg on the front (my right) foot. Any tips? Maybe I'm just to slow at the sprawl?
damn i make all those mistakes... i gotta pay attention to this on the mat! Thanks a lot sir!
You're Welcome!
Do these principles also apply for righty-lefty?
Great question Victor! No they don’t but I can shoot a video on some basics for opposite sides players.
Travis Stevens that would be awesome! I'm a righty and most people I spar with are almost always lefties 🤷🏻
Amazing
Thanks!
Ok ok, opposite sides, opposite sides!!
Video on best gripping practices for Opposite sided people.
I should have watched this before i got my ass tossed by everyone
