@invincaspartan pretty sure it was match up based but this could of changed around the brachy fatalis era i was burnt out around that time So idk what those monsters changed for lance
I cannot put down lance after Rise's instablock skill, that shit is too good and amazing, you dont have to feel like a guard 5 punching bag for lategame monsters
A few notes: In mh1 specific more than rest old gen lance was really strong because of a bug calculating the formula wrong similar to sns in freedom 1 Lance in tri was very good. Too tier in fact. So good they felt the need to nerf it immediately afterwards In mhw iceborn despite the stronger emphasis on element they tried to go with in the expansion for whatever bizarre reason they nerfed the element% of damage lance did per hit from base world. No idea why it seemed as random and arbitrary as nerfing dragon piercer which was already niche at that point compared to element bow.
Lance was fun too in frontier, we got 4x poke, 4x back hop, higher upper trust, stamina, attack & heal buff, guard backhop, instaguard, running with unsheated lance, and absolute fortress guard with ammo
Y'know with a game as insane as Frontier (particularly during the Z period) I'm curious how a weapon like lance was adapted to be more flashy and extreme
@@nathanblackburn1193 Extreme gave it; an area wide guard with a cooldown, a 360 degree (with Guard/fortification +2 and the Guard up Zenith skill) strong/power guard, “stocks” gained by blocking that could be consumed to heal, grant mega juice effect, and give an attack buff. There are also the almighty reflect and obscurity skills: reflect would damage a monster when you blocked an attack (the 3rd level with the Zenith boost has a motion value of 68 iirc) while obscurity increases attack and affinity on successful guards (being knocked down takes the buff away) Extreme lance is pretty neat in frontier, I use it alongside Swaxe F for grinding out lower tier Zenith Monsters.
Maki I don’t even realize this was you.! The new pic Threw me off.! Nice new Profile pic.! Also lance in try is freaking amazing.! Got to love the hop back 3 poke repeat.!!
The problem with elemental in MHWorld is that they put a hard cap on the numbers, and when they buffed elemental in Iceborne, they specifically nerfed the lance's elemental because it was too "powerful" in the demo.
Given even the lowest total number of players from Rise/Sunbreak, (from which the current popularity statistics are derived) 3% is still approximately 675,000 Lance users. It's definitely not a "few" in a general sense. It's only "few" in a statistical sense compared to, say, Long Sword. There were approximately 4.9 MILLION Long Sword users. Also obligatory ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH
Moral of the story-if you haven’t tried lance because it looks boring then give it a shot in sunbreak or even GU and experiment with the various switch skills and silkbinds or styles and hunter arts. Then once you have an appreciation for the weapon it’ll be more enjoyable in other games like world or 4
I loved adept style in GU, so when i seen they were bringing it back in rise as insta block I was so on board, to me perfect parrying is the most satisfying way to play and its hard for me to go back to games prior to GU and still want to play lance over other weapons
Lance has been one of, if not the most OP blademaster weapon at least once every gen. G1: MH Lance was THE weapon. G2: FU Para Lance + Flashbomb spam kept most monsters locked. G3: Tri Hoppy Lance could evade through anything mindlessly and still maintain high dps. G4: GU Striker is OP and Adept is not close behind. G5: SB Embolden+Heaven Sent makes you unkillable and gives you top 5 blademaster dps.
I think its the player base's fault too. A lot of them called it the most boring weapon of all and somehow the devs caught wind of it. Im happy that its kinda mainstream now tho, because theres always knights with lances that goes around fighting dragons in most fairy tales of old
With world, i've discovered a new universe by using lance. It is now my fav weapon to play, and everytime i met a monster that is stronger than me, i just have to pick my lance to simply win the quest
People don't use Lance because they also think it's a low dps weapon. Lance can have the highest dps of any weapon because the shield can give you virtually no downtime.
realistically, unless you are what they call a 'gamer', there will be downtime and you will have less damage with lance. I dont think this is a problem, tho. More damage only ends the hunt faster, and why would you want to do that? I want to spend time hunting monsters in my monster hunter game, dammit.
Great video. Sadly, I too found lance weapons boring in the early generations. Now it's my weapon of choice. Like you in the first generations I used Great Sword and Long Sword, the most used weapons, because they gave the feeling of high damage. Well they do high damage. If I could go back I would play lance, i just didn't understand how lance weapon worked. I considered the poke attack really weak but now seeing the damage numbers displayed in MH: World I understand that it was actually really good. Also now i like the counter attack and the ability to jump while front charging to do jump damage really make it more accessible.
Lance was the last weapon I learned out of all the weapons and it pretty much instantly became one of my top 3 favorite weapons. I understand people sleep on it just like I did but man, y’all are missing out
The lance was my last used weapon in MHW (my first game), nos it's my most confort and reliable weapon of the blademaster. In rise the weapon spot on the top 3 ones, aside Charge Blade and Hunting Horn. Great vídeo dood, there's q lot lot of heart into it!!
The fact you didn't show the black dragon Lance headlocking and going toe to toe with Fatalis, a monster no one online at the time could even fight without being 1 shot with melee weapons in the first game is a massive disservice. The weapon was so busted that they needed all the other game iterations to smear its name! On a more serious note, its just a precise, defensive weapon in a game people already devised ways of being one or both of those but better. HBG shield just a walking, comfy tank that can freely aim and do BIG dmg. Sticky is an opening machine and satisfying just popping things in the face. Gunlance having the meaty shield with all the complexities of shelling, the comfort of not having to bring traditional blademaster skills and the flashiness lacking in Lance. Lance is prob like middle of the pack for me. Bottom is prob hammer for similar main reasons I mentioned. SNS just because FC can be annoying to fight certain monsters at times where you need a really sweaty weapon to get the job done (dual blades vs alatreon comes to mind. Thats in the context of multiplayer with new people that brought like a safi shatter weapon and can't even be helped to just live long enough for the explosion in the first place)
I was thinking about changing my weapon a few months cause I always play with longsword and I wanted to know what it feels like, and one weapon that come into my mind was the Lance, and definitely after seeing this video I will give it a try
Hell yeah! I’m a nee Hunter and I started with Rise on switch. After the wids trailer and seeing lance weapon I was like “aight time to buy lance on PC”. And so I did. It was hella fun tbh. I was using Insect Glaive, Sword and Shield and my main was Hunting Horn cause I’m hella new and had to support the pros. Lol! All I can say lance made me move when I have to do blocks and counter and that made me laugh and smile. Just not enjoying lance when I play on multiplayer tho. I had to chase the monsters and that’s the only issue. Finally reached master rank thanks to speed running it with new MonHun friends. But yeah I need new armors for more defense cause. Monsters hit like a truck. xD
Lance was one of my main weapons back in Tri and it carried me through most of the game. I barely touched it during Gen 4, but now in Sunbreak I've picked it up again. Is actually very fun, even if it's damage is not as crazy as other weapons.
I'm glad they learned through GU that some flash and coolness is important for the lance. Sunbreak Lance is far from incredible, but it is so much more well thought through than ever before. *Rubs my core drill*
GU and Sunbreak are the best versions of Lance imo, the perfect guard is simply too satisfying. Also, elemental weapons finally being stronger really adds to the fun.
Honestly I REALLY REALLY disliked lance in every game just cus of the poke poke poke being the most optimal damage route and the charge move feeling weird But in sunbreak with guard dash and the fact that optimal dps now comes from using the smooth-ass advancing guard into leap > sweeping thrust, just made me absolutely love this weapon. Not to mention how satisfying adept guard is and the guard buff switch skill. It went from being a slow tank just poking to feeling like an unstoppable brawler that's gonna fuck you the hell up and you can't do shit about it. Literally went from being at the bottom of my tier list to my main weapon by a long shot in sunbreak.
I’ve only played monhun for a couple years now, but throughout that time I’ve been a diehard lancer. Yes it’s unpopular and yes it isn’t amazing, it’s still my weapon. I hate that it’s become a parry machine instead of a tank. I miss standing tall against valstrax nukes in gu, why oh why did rise make us play sekiro
Lance is my second favorite weapon next to charge blade. I think it's unpopular because it's very misunderstood due to the initial clunkiness the lances feel at first compared to other weapons that feel faster. Then it's dropped immediately and called easy under the assumption that you hold block and slowly walk around the whole fight. But man, sticking to a monster and constantly advancing through attacks, throwing a counter in the middle of your pokes to keep the combo going, and in GU, that shield charge? Mua. And yeah, Rise I think kinda took away most weapon's signature play style by giving everything a one button wirebug instant counter
@@yesimchar I see why people like it, but it’s just not lance to me. Lance has remained largely unchanged for 4.5 generations, then receives a parry at the tail end of 5th? It just feels very unlancelike to me
@@zrevi5918 but what are you gonna do when Wilds probably removes the parry? Stop playing the weapon? That’s why I hate it, people fell in love with Rise’s hyper aggressive lance, not the actual weapon
@@Elehk99 sorry about this, I think I just misunderstood that parry=counter. Parry would be the insta-block right? Yes I do like it but what made me love lance would be the aggressiveness. If it follows from world lance then my answer to your question would be yes. World lance for me is also a hyper aggressive weapon. And you need to be aggressive to be able to go toe to toe with other weapons. I went from psp MH games straight to rise then to world so I dont have that much experience on other lances but I think if someone really likes lance, if there is parry or not they would still play it. Parry for me is quite good but definitely not a reason for someone to use/main lance. Its about being aggressive (for me). Fun fact: I finished world just a few weeks ago with lance. Fugging struggled on fatalis for more than 8hrs but a win is still a win even if I only got a minute before the timer.
Have you seen how japanese players used lance? They could take down any G rank with barely any guarding, just backhops and poking. I myself have poked around with that playstyle in MHP2G as well.
Honestly the only people I see mad about the over the top movesets is old vets, but what did you expect from the team that made GU. If it irks you that bad you'll be back to poke poke poke backstep in MH6
Ill tell you how - every action series is slowly turning into Devil May Cry, lol. Look at the new FF. By 2030 every action game will converge into the same hack and slash, quick combat formula. This video reminds me of when i first started using the Gunlance in MH4U. Hard to adjust to but when you do, it is SO overpowered it's sort of hilarious. Only the explodey boy, what's its name again...? Gave me any trouble.
I've noticed that too, they're probably trying to get rid of down times in combat. I believe they managed to do a pretty good job with taking off down times in Frontier Z. And they tried to do that with sunbreak when they added counters, but it didn't get the same results.
I'm gonna be honest, the day I tried out the lance was the day my monster hunter brain broke. Wait, what do you mean I can not only just tell the big monster "no u" with the shield that is bigger than my body, and not have to bother actually dealing with MonHuns wonky dodge (don't even @ me monhun vets, you know how silly billy that dodge is without evade window, and even with sometimes) and can just...block the damage? Wait, you mean I can just sit there and...poke, poke, poke? Since then I rarely take any other weapons to task. It's literally THE perfect weapon for me.
Aaaaa the lance... Poking your enemy to death... Wonder what the new monster hunter will feel like... For all the weapon... Really wish capcom take what best for all generations and put it in one. It actually sad how some will not play generation ult or rise/sunbreak because its different...😅
But then we have people that will only play Gen Ult or Sunbreak... because they're different. It's the beauty of having so many different games. I rarely touch World (relative to my time on 3u, Gu, and Sunbreak) because Capcom has been kind enough to bless us with different games, all of great quality, with different mechanics. Although I've at least given every game enough time to beat low rank village (and I don't dislike any MH game, aside from 1st gen lol)
@@lux_less true that, gen 1 is clunky but i still poured 1500+ hour into it when it came out 😆. it just weird to me when people wish the game to stay the same without evolving in some way, what kind of madness is that 😅
Yeah. I love all the evolving, for sure! I personally don't understand people wanting the same basic thing, but I do understand having preferences. Hopefully we keep getting the current archetype of "grounded" game followed by an experimental one (4u then gu... world then rise) so that everyone is happy. There was this great video on MH Dos (and the franchise as a whole) that used this icecream analogy that, while mint is what the franchise is true to, the more chocolate that's added the better it sells.@@soulezwan266
@@lux_less yeah I also think evolution makes better the franchise, thanks to that, we can enjoy the lance more than ever. World is extremely boring to me, so even though I tried, I couldn't come back to it after having played rise, even though I can with any other mh game I have. I don't want the next monster hunter to be like a world 2.0, which I have the opinion that it won't, there are just so many people that are very toxically fanatic about that game while at the same time grounding rise.
I mained lance in the original MH game because I was the only one of my friends who could headlock rathalos and rathian consistently enough for plate farming xD
All great but the major problem with lance right now is that capcom took lance identity of ''defend&retaliate'' and gave it to every single weapon in the form of counters. Even giving other weapons counters that safeguard against moves that even the lance cannot block. so you keep asking yourself this question.. why am I playing this slow moveset, low damage, to block and counter when dps weapons can do the same? greatest offender of course is the favorite child of Capcom, the long-sword. I understand that a Japanese game would favor katanas but not being able to block or counter a death energy beam with lance MASSIVE shield, but being able to emerge unscathed with a counter from long-sword feels disrespectful and a insult. giving safe options and counters to every weapon is what killed the lance reason to exist, we only play it out of love now, its not the best at something (defense) anymore
I mean, and don't wanna be rude, while your argument is correct in theory, in practice lance is the 4th highest dps in the melee category, and long sword in particular is below pretty much anything else in the game atm, also lance doesn't need to invest in a lot of skills to become incredibly defensively proficient, and while the other weapons have some sort of counter mechanic available to them to be able to defend against the huge aoes, lance is the only one able to make use of their defensive tools offensively at the same time, I feel like you are not considering how wirebug dependant the other defensive options in the game are. A better form of criticism would be that the weakest shield in the game is now the strongest in the form of guard embolden SnS, which is frankly ridiculous considering that it is also the third highest melee dps, but imho SnS deserves some love, and after TU6 lance, Gl and SnS became significantly better than anything else bar strong stance GS and DB.
@@HoneyBadging Maybe he is talking about iceborne where it's really skill hungry AND bad dps, huge knockbacks and chip damage when guarding, can't guard things even with guard up etc...
@@xenio8736 Maybe they should talk about a good game then? GU and Sunbreak Lance is OP. Third gen Lance is OP. First gen Lance is OP. FU it's ok to weak on it's own but becomes OP if you bring a 4x Darkness Lance Status Up party and keep the monster permanently locked in paralysis.

@invincaspartan pretty sure it was match up based but this could of changed around the brachy fatalis era i was burnt out around that time
So idk what those monsters changed for lance
I cannot put down lance after Rise's instablock skill, that shit is too good and amazing, you dont have to feel like a guard 5 punching bag for lategame monsters
Well, that's why the rampage skill gaurdbash exists. You can just hold shield and profit😎 especially risen shagaru.
A few notes:
In mh1 specific more than rest old gen lance was really strong because of a bug calculating the formula wrong similar to sns in freedom 1
Lance in tri was very good. Too tier in fact.
So good they felt the need to nerf it immediately afterwards
In mhw iceborn despite the stronger emphasis on element they tried to go with in the expansion for whatever bizarre reason they nerfed the element% of damage lance did per hit from base world.
@@nathanblackburn1193
Extreme gave it; an area wide guard with a cooldown, a 360 degree (with Guard/fortification +2 and the Guard up Zenith skill) strong/power guard, “stocks” gained by blocking that could be consumed to heal, grant mega juice effect, and give an attack buff.
There are also the almighty reflect and obscurity skills: reflect would damage a monster when you blocked an attack (the 3rd level with the Zenith boost has a motion value of 68 iirc) while obscurity increases attack and affinity on successful guards (being knocked down takes the buff away)
Extreme lance is pretty neat in frontier, I use it alongside Swaxe F for grinding out lower tier Zenith Monsters.
11:17 Alchemy Lance has omni dirrectional guard dash.
@Marcus Chow yea
other weapon: we are evolving!
lance: i am old but still can kick a bucket!
I skipped generations and I never used lance until rise, oh boi I didn't know they take so many moves from GU. That was pretty cool!
Maki I don’t even realize this was you.! The new pic Threw me off.! Nice new Profile pic.! Also lance in try is freaking amazing.! Got to love the hop back 3 poke repeat.!!
Massive props for using Kiseki music in the intro
Having started with the Lance back on 3U and changing it to the HH, I find myself enjoying the Lance a lot overall.
The problem with elemental in MHWorld is that they put a hard cap on the numbers, and when they buffed elemental in Iceborne, they specifically nerfed the lance's elemental because it was too "powerful" in the demo.
Lance players are really reliable
All three of us that is 😂
Given even the lowest total number of players from Rise/Sunbreak, (from which the current popularity statistics are derived) 3% is still approximately 675,000 Lance users. It's definitely not a "few" in a general sense. It's only "few" in a statistical sense compared to, say, Long Sword.
There were approximately 4.9 MILLION Long Sword users.
Also obligatory ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH
What's boring about : poke -> poke -> poke -> dash -> poke -> poke -> poke -> dash?
Besides everything?
Nothing. 10/10 peak gameplay. I use poke-poke-poke-counterpoke, as I prefer to be stationary.
Adept greatsword is like a high you can never come down from
Lance has been one of, if not the most OP blademaster weapon at least once every gen.
G5: SB Embolden+Heaven Sent makes you unkillable and gives you top 5 blademaster dps.
as a main lance user on Sunbreak i got teary after watched this video :')
I think its the player base's fault too. A lot of them called it the most boring weapon of all and somehow the devs caught wind of it. Im happy that its kinda mainstream now tho, because theres always knights with lances that goes around fighting dragons in most fairy tales of old
it's the least played weapon in rise :V
With world, i've discovered a new universe by using lance. It is now my fav weapon to play, and everytime i met a monster that is stronger than me, i just have to pick my lance to simply win the quest
haha classic . Memories. Thank you for this. lance was always my favourite
Yeah, I like Lance Weapon, but please make a video about Gunlance too...🙂😏
i mean, you still block and stab, just with style.
look at the transformation SnS, LS, and GS went through.
i miss the old metal lance designs
I mean you can litteraly still play it, just spam the poke button, that's it
@@daethmer7834 visual designs and game play mechanics are two different things my guy.
you mean the starter metal lance?
@@RedHornSSS of the older games before World, the knightly looking ones instead of the generic modern style World has.
@@andylastname566he shown the old style metal lance in the video. That's rly the only one of pure metal construction that's missing in World iirc.
Him calling Lance as the "Lance Weapon" for some reason feels heavier than lifting the weapon itself in the game...
Ah yes the weapon with the most combos
"Poke poke poke"
"Poke poke poke"
And
"runrunrunrunrunrun... Poke"
Stab, Stab, Stab, Parry, Stab, Stab, Charged Stab, side doge, Stab, Charged Stab, Parry, Fail, Block, Sheath, Run, Heal, Flex, Repeat.

Played a bit Lance on Gen1 (PS2), found it hard.
Played it again in World, fell in love.
I was thinking about changing my weapon a few months cause I always play with longsword and I wanted to know what it feels like, and one weapon that come into my mind was the Lance, and definitely after seeing this video I will give it a try
og lance is best lance, whats not to like about poke, poke, poke, backstep, repeat?!
I still play it like that even in Rise and I honestly cba to do anything but poke poke poke.
You can do that still in the newer games. But very bold of the developers to make it much less damaging, compared to sweeping thrust play style.
I like to not fall asleep
Tri lance is very good
I'm glad they learned through GU that some flash and coolness is important for the lance. Sunbreak Lance is far from incredible, but it is so much more well thought through than ever before. *Rubs my core drill*
funnily enough, i felt it didn't need flashiness. It was just a simple weapon, simple attacks worked fine.
fundamentally, we still just poke
GU and Sunbreak are the best versions of Lance imo, the perfect guard is simply too satisfying. Also, elemental weapons finally being stronger really adds to the fun.
I mained lance in MH3, now a IG main since MH4, but I always have a pocket lance for aggressive monsters with huge aoe attacks.
Honestly I REALLY REALLY disliked lance in every game just cus of the poke poke poke being the most optimal damage route and the charge move feeling weird
But in sunbreak with guard dash and the fact that optimal dps now comes from using the smooth-ass advancing guard into leap > sweeping thrust, just made me absolutely love this weapon.
This sm. I love parrying and countering nearly everything and then going on the offensive. Something lance needed beyond just....Poke poke poke.
I love poke-poke-poke, but damn did that advancing guard feel nice to reposition with.
Me playing Lance in FU cuz I heard it was op back then.
Now I'm full Lance main.
I've only ever used heavy bowgun after watching this video im gonna give lance a try
If you showed me current Lance gameplay back when I was playing 4u, I would've assumed that was God Eater; holy cow.
Mua.
And yeah, Rise I think kinda took away most weapon's signature play style by giving everything a one button wirebug instant counter
i personally love the parry play style
Poke around and found out.
really good video, for the next one like that could you do it on the SnS ?
I speedrun Fatalis with lance it's one of favorite weapons and after seeing this I definitely playing on rise.
Proud lancer since the very first game.
Sometimes I cheat on it with its sister the gunlance but don't tell it.
GU was the best version of Lance, was so much fun
I used to main lance in MH tri… good old times
Anyone know the song that plays at the end during the rise section right after he mentions making elemental lances
Soaratorium Theme sad version, or alt version
What song is play at 0:11 - 0:30?
its because of frontier. there's your answer. have fun.
Lol
Honestly the only people I see mad about the over the top movesets is old vets, but what did you expect from the team that made GU. If it irks you that bad you'll be back to poke poke poke backstep in MH6
Started using lance in dos and never looked back, just a safe and always solid weapon.
Same for me.
thanks to rise make lance more fun to use
And they tried to do that with sunbreak when they added counters, but it didn't get the same results.
tbf FF16's combat director is the same director for DMC5 lmao
Well dmc is peak.
@@marcusaaronliaogo9158 but the problem is not everything is DMC, If I want to play DMC combat just play DMC, every other copy cat is subtier
But Frontier is the most DMC of them all. Isn't it?
You gotta make more lore videos like the Scarlett mystery man
I miss how op evade lancing felt in gen 4. Give me back my 3 backhops capcom! 😢
Lance gang rise up
I mained lance in the original MH game because I was the only one of my friends who could headlock rathalos and rathian consistently enough for plate farming xD
Evasion+7 00 👀👀? Anyone?
YESSSSSSSS
