One of my favorite sitcoms of all time. Most people say they never heard of it, which I think is a shame. Newsradio does not get the recognition and popularity it deserves.

"when Phil Hartman died the show stopped" About half of Season 5 is great, including
Jail/The Lam/Clash Of The Titans (Stephen admitted that he started caring about the show again with Jail)
      Wino
      Flowers For Matthew
      Assistant
      Freaky Friday

I'm glad to see this amazing show finally getting some recognition! Another recent sitcom that I think Newsradio helped a lot is Community. Watching Community's frequent "concept" episodes, I'm reminded of Newsradio's timeless "Space" episode (and the somewhat less memorable follow-up, "Sinking Ship".)

The whole cast was amazing and really everything was in place by the 2nd episode. Dave, Phil and Steven Root all played so well off each other. It's shocking to see it largely forgotten considering this was a showcase for Phil (whom everyone loves) and how famous Joe has become. Shout out if anyone knows where i can find an official WNYX coffee mug.

NEWSRADIO was more radical and innovative than people realize.
It was all irony on a big epic scale. And it was constantly on the brink of cancellation it's whole run... but I feel like if it came out now, it would be the bonanza it deserves to be.

One of the greatest shows ever. Shamelessly, I cannot count how many times I’ve watched all of the seasons. I never watched it when it was on tv. I didn’t discover the show until I saw a re-run.

I’ve just stumbled on this review while searching for NewsRadio bloopers. You perfectly articulated why I love this show so much, since I first started watching when it went into (early) syndication (1998)? NewsRadio means so much to me and I didn’t realize how influential it was to comedy in general. It deserves so much more recognition. Great recap of the series!👍

NewsRadio was on A&E in syndication for a bit, and I always wondered why A&E? This was before the huge reality TV boom and stuff like Nero Wolfe was on the air. They knew then how groundbreaking this show was and wanted to share in its, if not understated, brilliance.

I vaguely remember them getting rid of something down that trash chute in a later episode but they used the mail drop and never even addressed it. Like an inside joke for the audience that paid attention and watched the earlier episodes. I JUST got it. That is the kind of show I love. Talented writing and acting COMBINED! Joe Rogan and Matt Foley are a couple of my favorite people in Hollywood still to this day. I wonder what ever became of Joe Rogan. He had an episode where he got on air and he showed potential. He could be on some sort of long format style radio broadcast if those ever become a thing.

I did, and still do, love that show. My only issue was the idiotic character "Electrician Joe" who should have been "Engineer Joe".
No radio station has a full time electrician, but a full time "broadcast engineer" (usually not a degreed engineer, but a well qualified RF/Audio/Electronics technician) was common up until the last 20 years or so.

I honeslty didn't feel like this show was that abnormal. I mean I love family sitcoms and even slightly edgier ones. This show to me was Friends meets Spin City despite Spin City not airing yet. I'm hacking my way through WKRP in Cincinnati and clearly a lot of that stuff existed even that far back. Now I'm not a big fan of how edgy shows have gotten today where the whole concept is about sex. The only single camera sitcoms that I've enjoyed recently is Mom and the Goldbergs. Both Blackish and Fresh Off The Boat have been kinda boring to me. How I Met Your Mother and Two and A Half Men just got dirtier and dirtier. Atleast Big Bang Theory and Mom has a little heart. I did like how in NewsRadio they don't sleep together in the pilot or later. The idea that it took place in the second episode was cool. It's better to not let the audience know in the pilot where the tension will be.

    • @milesmorris9333
      @milesmorris9333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I hate to bust your chops, but Mom is not a single-camera sitcom. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, however, is a great single-camera show. There are a few sex jokes here and there, but its laughs derive from humanity for the most part.

It's a weird show. It's very unsentimental and therefore you never really get under the skin of any of the characters. Everything is played for a laugh or for the plot to move. You don't really care that much about any of the characters.
On one hand that is exactly what makes it work and on the other it doesn't linger in your mind afterwards.
Seinfeld is positively saccharine in comparison and the, in some respects, spiritual successor Just Shoot Me! is far warmer.
The only similar show I can think of is spin City. Incidentally also a vehicle for an actor, in this case Michael Fox, vs. Phil Hartman.
