  • This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to program garage door opener remotes. We show how to program remotes using several common types of wall controls; we also go over how to program older models that use a Learn button on the motor unit. We cover programming a remote to open two garage doors and explain the difference between programing an original remote and a universal remote. Finally, we talk about what to do if your remote won’t accept a code.

    For the smart switch, do I need special wiring? Or will it work using the same low voltage wiring on the old dumb switch I currently have?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smart wall controls typically don’t need special types of wires. As long as the existing wiring for your old wall control is in good shape, you should be able to use that same wiring for the new wall control.

    I followed your video. I still have a short two blinks cannot open garage door. The sensors are good. The wiring is good. The sensors are aligned. What else could cause a short two blinks I’ve also checked the power source and I’ve also checked the wiring going to the on off switch on the wall, everything’s fine. I still get two blanks and it won’t open. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    I have a 1995 garage door opener that came with my new house. It's a Sears Garage Door Opener Digital Control Model #139.653000 and Serial# E-147709. This garage door opener does not have a Learn button. What should I do? The installed wall switch works perfectly, yet I need a remote control to open it from the outside. Is this one works for a community gate or just a home gate ? I’m looking for the one who has a tooth from the inside an you can switch them around to program it ! I don’t see this one has it ! Any help would be appreciated

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like the gate remote may have code switches. Programming code switches is described on page 19 of this garage door opener owner's manual: www.searspartsdirect.com/manual/5aqre5qvcg-000247/craftsman-13953610-garage-door-opener-parts . We hope this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know and provide the model number of the opener that you're working on.

    I have a Craftsman Garage Door Opener with the Motion Detecting Wall Unit and two 3-button remotes that you picture as original equipment. Neither remote will work. Batteries are new and are inserted properly. I've tried re-programming using the Wall Unit and then using the Learn Button on the ceiling unit. The lights never blink and the remotes won't open the door. Both the wall unit and my outside unit (requiring a code) work just fine. It hardly seems likely that both remotes have failed at exactly the same time and need replacement. What else can I do?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Change the battery in the keyless entry (outside unit that requires a code) because a weak battery in that keyless entry could interfere with programming. If that doesn’t help, erase all codes as shown at 6:40 in the video. Reprogram the keyless entry and then try to program your other 2 remotes. If you can’t program the keyless entry after erasing all codes then the logic board in the opener may be defective. If you can program the keyless entry but still can’t program the other 2 remotes, then both of those remotes could be defective even though that failure rarely occurs.

    My Sears Craftsman Garage door opener will not stay closed when I close it. It closes just fine but when it gets to the bottom it opens right back up???

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try adjusting the down-travel setting as shown in your owner’s manual. The garage door opener will open the if the down-travel setting allows the door to hit the ground.
      If that doesn’t help, follow the tips in this video to check and adjust the down-force setting on your garage door opener: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-make-force-adjustments-if-a-garage-door-wont-open-or-close-video.html.

    My garage opener works with my existing remotes but i bought 2 new remotes and i program them and the lights blink and all that but just doesnt open them. Any help? They are new remotes with new batteries

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new remotes are likely universal remotes with a recessed button on the remote that you’ll need to press before programming the new remote. That recessed button on the remote is shown at 1:07 in the video. If you haven’t been pressing that recessed button before programming the new remotes, follow the instructions in the video for programming the new universal remotes.
      Try erasing all remote codes as shown at 2:24 in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-opener-remotes-wont-work-video.html. You’ll then need to reprogram all remotes. If that doesn’t help, try resetting the logic board as shown at 2:42 in the above video.
      If these tips don’t help, then the new universal remotes you purchased may not be compatible with your garage door opener motor unit when you continue to use the original remotes. Erase all codes and see if the new universal remotes will program without programming the original remotes. If you can program just the new universal remotes and not the original ones, then the sets of remotes aren’t compatible. If you want more than 2 remotes, we recommend buying and programming additional universal remotes.

  • @justinkeller5578
    @justinkeller5578 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a brand new Craftsman universal remote, just got it today. The front looks identical to what is in the video. But there is no recessed button on the back, and you can't see it in the video. There is something that looks promising on the bottom edge, but that makes the plastic casing come apart.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the new universal remote has a recessed button, you’ll need to pull off the visor clip as shown at 1:10 in the video. You may find the recessed button underneath the visor clip.
      If you don’t find a recessed button, try programming the new remote using the procedure shown beginning at :53 in the video.
      If these tips don’t help, let us know the model number of your garage door opener and the part number or model number of the new universal remote and we’ll try to help you more.

    Thank you for this video. My wall mounted garage door opener works with no problems. Our remote-control door opener worked fine until just recently, sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not. I changed the light bulb, ordered new compatible remotes, tried to reprogram the remote using the wall mount per your great instructions, tried to reset the door opener by unplugging it for a minute, replugging it back in, reset it by holding the learn button for 6 seconds and tried to reprogram the remote. Can't find any RFH that is causing interference. It is in the correct working mode, but nothing works. If the wall mount door opener works would the unit need a new capacitor? I think the last option would be to order a new Sears Craftsman 41A4315-7D Garage Door Opener Circuit Board, but I cannot find one. Do you have any other suggestions that may cause the remotes not to work?

    Okay, HELP!! I ordered two "new" remotes from E-bay. NEITHER worked. Both looked used, but using the "light/activate/program" button at once did not work. That procedure DID work for a unit I bought that was genuinely new. Does the learn button on the back of the door opener itself have to be reset for each new remote? It seemed to me that just holding the one button on the remote and the two buttons on the wall pad worked. I don't want to mess up the one I now have working. TIA

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t have to reset the learn button on the back of the garage door opener motor unit for each new remote.
      Check the batteries in the 2 remotes that you ordered from e-Bay. If the batteries are okay, follow the steps in the video for programming those remotes using the learn button on the garage door opener motor unit. If the remotes won’t program, they may not be compatible with your garage door opener or the remotes may be broken.

    Wy don´t it stay on?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The logic board controls the Learn light. Try resetting the logic board by unplugging the garage door opener motor unit from the electrical outlet for 1 minute. Plug it back in and see if you can program the remotes. Keep in mind that you only have 30 seconds to program a remote device once you press the Learn button to turn on the light. If your Chamberlain remotes have a programming button as shown at 4:53 in the video, press the programming button on the remote device before you press the Learn button. The programming button on Chamberlain keychain remotes is on the side instead of the back of the device. Weak batteries in a remote device can interfere with programming. You may need to change the batteries in all remote devices before programming the remotes. We hope this additional information helps. Post additional details if you need further assistance.

    I had to take different steps to get my (139.18191) remote to work again. (Purple learn button)
    (While in Learn mode) After failing to invoke any response to holding button 1 on the remote, tapped button 3 to see if there was a function loss (and if that button then could be used instead). The LED blinked and shut off. After that button 1 again functioned as normal while button 3 blinked the LED without seeming to affect any other function. :| This wasn't in the troubleshooting guide.
    Note: This was a after ...
    - cleaning the contacts, testing the battery, replacing the battery, re-flowing the battery fillet, verifying other remotes work, reflowing all the joints, continuity testing the traces, [notice the back cover is bowed/stretched by the metal clip]
    ... and building up the solder fillet (the battery contact pushes into) by an absurd extent.
    If there was another condition causing this malfunction state, it may have been cleared by these other actions.

    My Craftsman remote will not work. Push button on the wall does not have lock feature, so that's not problem. Unplugged opener, waited and then plugged back in. Tried re-programming remote just like in video. The remote still does not work, but when I push the remote button the learn button does flash. So it seems to be getting the signal? It just wont open, though. What else could I try? I don't have a keypad, by the way (wish I did).

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try replacing the remote’s battery. A weak battery can sometimes prevent you from programming the remote.
      If replacing the remote battery doesn’t help, then the remote is bad or the logic board inside the garage door opener motor unit failed.
      You can try to fix the problem by replacing the remote. If the problem continues, then you’ll likely need to replace the logic board. Here’s a video that shows how: www.searspartsdirect.com/repair-guide/garage-door-opener/how-to-replace-the-logic-board-on-a-garage-door-opener.html.

    • @searspartsdirect

      Older garage door opener models that don’t have a programming light use DIP switches as shown at 7:18 in the video. I have a craftsman 1/2 HP 139,53661SRT3 (3661Thru 3677). The remotes and wireless all work, reprogrammed and tested ok for one shot to open the garage door. If I want to close the door 30 seconds later it will not work. Come back minutes later and they will all work so it has to do with the timing delay. Found that if I open the door and the lights come on and the door opens, if I manually turn off the lights the remotes will work, but if the lights are left on( to go off on their own) the remotes will not close the door until the lights go off. It seems that once the door is opened the delay for the lights being on blocks any signal to the unit until they go off and resets the circuit. have you seen any thing like this and any input would be appreciated. Could there be a relay that gets stuck or is the logic board a issue, or something else I can look for. If the remotes can be programmed to turn lights on and off would that be a work around.
    Thanks
    Al Moschetti

      The delay timer for the lights likely interferes with the logic board’s signal reception to cause this problem. If your opener has a Premium Console wall control, which has 3 buttons including a lock button, then you can program a button on the remote to shut off the light manually. Page 33 in your owner’s manual shows how to program a remote to shut off the light using the Premium Console wall control. Here’s a link for your owner’s manual in case you need it: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/13953661srt1-craftsman-parts-garage+door+opener-manual?manualIndex=0. If your wall control only has a single button, or shutting off the light doesn’t improve reception because the timer still runs, then you’ll likely need to replace the logic board to fix this problem. Here’s a link for the logic board: www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/41A5021-3G/0009/139.html.

    I moved into a house with a 1996 craftsman garage door opener that has a red learn button. There were no remotes but the keypad in the house works fine. I was easily able to sync up a vehicle to the opener. I purchased a pair of aftermarket remotes that were generic and had no craftsman logo and no recessed button to push with the visor clip and after following all instructions and all methods they do nothing even though they have new batteries and the LED on the remotes light up. There is a hard wired wall pad in the garage so I don't think it's an option to try to sync the remotes with that, although I tried. I'm at a total loss

      Let us know the model number of your Craftsman garage door opener and we'll try to help. The remotes that you purchased may not be compatible with the 1996 garage door opener that you have.

    I followed all the instructions for my basic Craftsman remote featured in the first part of the video, changed the battery, tried all 3 buttons using the methods on the wall control and the motor unit--and none of them worked. Wall pad outside the garage works. Please advise!

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the wall pad outside the garage works, the logic board on the garage door opener is likely okay. The basic remote that you’re trying to program may be defective. A weak battery in the wall pad outside the garage could interfere with programming the basic remote. Try replacing the battery in the outside wall pad and then try to program your basic remote. If the basic remote still won’t program, you may need to replace it.

    Tried all methods and programming doesn't work. Easily programmed one opener but the other refuses to learn. In normal mode, the learn light flashes when I push the remote buttons. So I know it's getting a signal but the door doesn't move. In learn mode, the learn light just stays solid and it refuses to learn any new signal, including the one that works on the other door. I'm at wit's end.

    This has not worked for me at all!!! So beyond frustrating!!!! We have tried everything and it just won't work ever since I changed the code on my garage door. We cannot get the remote to sync at all!! Any other suggestions please??

      We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble programming your remote. If you haven't tried erasing all remotes then programming all remotes, we recommend that you try that. Also, try programming the remote using the Learn button on the motor unit if you haven't tried that. If these tips don't help and you need more assistance, give us more details about what you've tried, the model number of your garage door opener and the type of remote that you're trying to program.

    light on motor unit does not blink but immediately opens the door

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The remote that you’re trying to program may already be programmed to open the garage door. See if that remote works without pressing the Learn button. If it does, then there’s no need to program it. If the remote only works when you hold it next to the motor unit, then a weak remote battery or RF (radio frequency) interference is likely preventing the remote from working when you move it further away. If the LED won't light when you press the recessed button on the back of the remote, then the remote is likely defective. If you need more help, let us know.

      got a new one and it works! However, my neighbor can control my garage with his remote so I keep coming home to a wide open garage. I even re-programmed the remote to a different button but that didn't fix it. Any suggestions?@@searspartsdirect

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenkyjenks1124 To fix the problem of your neighbor's remote opening your garage door, you'll need to erase all codes (typically accomplished by holding down the Learn button on the motor unit for 6 seconds) and then re-program all your remote devices (including the wireless keypad that's outside your garage).

      Most, but not all garage door openers are compatible with the universal remotes. Let us know the model number of your garage door opener and the part or model number of the universal remote that you're trying to program. We'll check for compatibility and try to give you troubleshooting advice once we get that information.
