- The MDX Type S comes with extra performance from Acura. Under the hood is a 3.0L turbocharged V6 that produces 355HP & mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. On the outside you will find the Type S unique color called Tiger's Eye, 21in wheels, and Brembo brakes. On the inside you will be greeted to an Orchid trimmed interior, digital gauge cluster and panoramic sun roof. Is the 2023 Acura MDX Type S a BETTER sport SUV to buy than a Genesis GV80?

One of the major info people arent aware of! Honda/Acura really over built this 3.0 to handle way more power than what they gave it. @@alpe6228
My favorite color in the type s family. Tigers eye looks so good. Two things I would change from this suv is get rid of all the gloss black pieces and replace them with carbon fiber. The second thing is the wheel arches should be color matched. Over time that gloss black isn’t going to clean and get scratched up easily

How funny. The folks at my Acura dealer tell me this color is virtually unsellable. No one, at least here in Denver, wants it. 🤷♂️

You right with that gloss black I have a 22 Aspec and man it getting scratched already luckily it’s not to bad so far I got 40k miles on it but luckily there some car detailing stuff that can hide the scratches lol

I LOVE my touchpad. Love the feeling of being able to lean back and work that touchpad like James T. Kirk😊. Acura, from a business perspective, should have made it also a touchscreen, but as I have said many times, if it had both I would still be using the touchpad 80% of the time.

Yeah, after owning the MDX now for 3 weeks, the touchpad is perfectly fine. I like that I don't have to reach forward every time to touch a touchscreen like in other competitors I test drove. And like you said I'd still use it most of the time even if the screen was a touchscreen.
The Driver POV on the Test Drives are definitely the Best Reviews. Seeing the Dash as you hit the gas and seeing the road ahead are a major selling point. The reviews are really good but that POV Boosts you significantly.

I just bought a '24 MDX Aspec partly due to your reviews and confidence to try the infotainment. After using it I LOVE IT. NO SCREEN FINGERPRINTS! Also I don't have to lean forward to touch the screen, controls are right at the fingers all the time, and it super quick and responsive! Anyone on the fence because of it, just try it. It's more intuitive than a lot of reviewers make it out to be. Different does not mean bad. Thanks for the great in depth fun reviews!
Lol I have an RDX and I tell people that all the time! My screen stays clean.
I read a lot of people complain about the track pad..how many times do someone play with it. I just set mines and forget.
This one on the acuras is not bad at all. The one on the Lexis is complete garbage though.

Having owned a Legend and MDX I can say Acura reliability and servicing top notch. There is a difference between BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus service personalities. Acura is the most laid back.However Acura can't decide on sport or luxury but this one comes closer. Still considering price and all around quality I can see why someone would buy it. I would like to see them just step it up that extra bit in a Type S. Nice review Joe pointing out all the variables.
You do realize that the bwm X3 or x5 is more reliable than this piece of sh1t!! Go to the reviews and it will answer all your stupid questions!!!! The new bmw’s suv are far more reliable than this crap lol if your going to talk shit please make sure you know your facts young lady hahaha

@@kobekiko475 I have owned multiple of both. The BMW is built like a tank in a good way. The Acura is definitely not as heavily built. However the BMW was in the shop more times and required more frequent maintenance. I enjoyed the BMWs much more than the Acuras I have owned. When I means cars I bought for wife and kids also. So yeah I agree with what you said basically. Go visit the waiting lounge of the different brands and you will see what I mean.
My opinion price is getting to high. In Canada at my local dealer it's 105$
Thanks for sharing - that helps. I've only had GM for 20+ years - usually new Yukon Denali. But I got so burned by GM warranty -- even the dealer showed me internal GM corporate comments - for the first time in life I'm going import and MDX is on the list for sure. Love the Type S -- but not sure my DD's coming college tuition will like it :) So perhaps Advance-Aspec might be me

I agree Joe, wheelwell trim should be body color. Also they should dump all the piano black in the cockpit and replace it with carbon fiber. (Side hustle suggestion for wrap shops!)

The gloss black around the wheel wells doesn't bother me too much, since it's pretty thin. But that strip at the bottom along the sides and the little piece extending off the mirrors detracts from that beautiful color, in my opinion!

If you are leasing for 3 years, either will do. However, if you prefer to buy like I do, you know damn well there is only one which will still be running flawlessly in 2033: the Honda.

We owned a 2001 and 2005 MDX. Both were great cars. My wife totaled both of them including one rollover and walked away both times without a scratch. One of the firemen who pulled her out of the rollover, was so impressed he told my wife he was buying one for his wife. Only negative is they required premium fuel, which now ridiculous in California.
First off I am glad that your wife is okay. Thankfully she was well protected.
So I drive my dads mdx I believe tech package and drives it on regular. He says “it drives the same” and it feels fast enough when I drive it so 🤷🏽♂️
@@5kdaking334 you may want to check with Acura…the ones we had called for premium…for emergencies they said okay…but long term could damage the engine…the few times I had to run regular it seemed to run the same…fyi…great cars…good luck!

Was contemplating buying this or the Gx460. Eventually go with the 2023 Gx460 because it the last V8 Lexus make. But this car always on my mind , maybe in the future I’ll buy a used one as my daily driver. Such a handsome SUV
That 1/4 mile time is very close to my stock 66' Chevelle SS 396 from back in the day.

Great review Joe as always. I drove this a year ago and loved it but there were a few drawbacks for me. I wish it had a twin Turbo to push about 380-400 HP, the handling wasn’t a sharp as the BMW X5 I drove days later. The touch screen should have been touch screen and I think the price was about 5K too much. Acura will be more reliable than BMW and Genesis for sure.

We have a 06 MDX and it is by far the most reliable/fun car we’ve had! 245k miles and still runs so smooth and quite. Acura is the best.

Joe you pointed out Acura badge, and that badge is probably bigger that Favor Flav’s Clock. My wife didn’t buy the MDX because of the infotainment, no touchscreen is a deal breaker for a lot of users. I didn’t have an issue having no touchscreen , but the sales lady struggled with it lol.

I have the A-Spec, but even in that trim, Acura could do so much better. Rework the infotainment and make it a touchscreen, bring it closer to the driver/passenger. Improve the quality/resolution of the cameras and add a front facing camera as well. Add 3rd row AC Vents somewhere in the ceiling, anywhere. It gets hoooot in the 3rd row. Bump the power to 300hp on lower trims 400 on Type S.

Great review! I love the MDX. Functional, practical and simple. I just wished Honda would stop being so conservative and make a full-sized SUV. We're in the market for one and have been looking at Toyota/Lexus but have been bitterly disappointed in their design flaws.

Bought a used 2023 Type S Advanced MDX Liquid Carbon and Red interior for my wife. After 3 weeks I can say from what I've driven it would be a fantastic daily and long distance driving vehicle. l I drove 500 miles round trip to pick it up and those massage seats are very comfortable and hit the spot.
Cons: Ventilated seats are pretty underwhelming and barely notice they are on. No ventilation at all for 3rd row passengers (kids). Only my smaller kids really want to sit back there. My iphone/case doesn't work that well will with the charging pad. Buying it used saved me $13k vs new and at that price... it was a steal.
Joe, you looked like you were waiting for more when you went on throttle..imo. I'm looking at these SUV's and haven't drove one yet. I really like the styling on this Acura and would definitely delete or keep the 3rd row down. Acura/Honda always seem a bit under-powered to me but 355 hp for what this is does not seem bad. Also looking at the X5, Blazer RS, and Macan S. I know a big difference in performance and price but gotta see what I like most for a daily driver! I think Audi Q8's are way over-priced but are probably the best looking..imo. Thanks again for the review!

Nice review Joe. Acura should have went with factory smoke headlights to add a more sleek speedy look to the front.
Too many issues with complying with state laws
The headlights and taillights are already slightly smoked on the Type S and A-Spec trims of the MDX
I test drove this and the infotainment system was just bad. I will buy this the day the move to a touchscreen, because it handles so well for a vehicle its size. Current Tesla Model Y Performance driver here.

I have this very vehicle - white exterior. I look at Acura as a "middle of the road" car. It's a good price, decent specs, and very reliable. It doesn't go crazy with things but has enough to make you know that you are in a modern car. The quality is top notch. I keep it in Normal mode unless I am on the highway then I put it in comfort. If I think I am going to compete with other vehicles from a red light I'll jump it into Sport which lowers the who vehicle (a cool thing to see from outside the vehicle). So fun.
Just wondering, did you lease or finance? I ask as I have tried to get into this vehicle. I am about 80% of the way through with a 21 TLX lease. My acura dealership aint letting these go easily even though I am a current customer. Just wondering how much I should be expecting to pay.
@@WD.909 Financed in January. 4.59% interest. 48 months. $1,300.00 a month. I forgot what I put down to get there. The dealer dropped the price a bit but, back then, they weren't moving much on the Type S. Interest rates are higher and loans are harder to get now.

HELP! I just test drive (2) TYPE S's ...about hour ago. Loved it. But- - I think I could hear some wind noise from the left side....could be driver, could be left rear. I heard it in BOTH units. Is this a normal thing? In fairness, today is a very windy day, the kids of wind that you feel pushing your car on the road.

I’m definitely feeling that color I’m still not feelin the gloss black also the back wipers needs to be tucked in & by the way joe the mdx replace the Acura SLX in the early 2000s
They can't do tucked in rear wipers because it compacts the snow up and can damage the motor, esp with wet heavy snow.

For a type s should also come with roof rack and towing trail with light connection for those the like sport outdoor activities

Touch pad is great 3 years in. 2nd nature now. I can see it being odd for some at first.

Genesis GV80 has ventilated heated and cooled rear seats and blows this vehicle out of the water for ride quality, luxury, value and performance.

Such a really nice car… I just don’t understand why they can’t make it the size of the Honda pilot, the 3rd row seat of the pilot makes more sense to me personally for the family. And they classify it as an 8 seater rather than a 7. But the MDX is a gorgeous car nonetheless. A lot of luxury
Ikr!the pilot is 2 inches longer but it’s 3rd row and cargo space are much roomier than the mdx

I drove the 2024 Type-S Advanced yesterday and was very underwhelmed with its performance. Beautiful car, but I expected much more for the $$$ in performance. I'm currently in a Q7 3.0, so I was expecting the same or better.
Too bad I’m broke, I would love to own this wonderful suv. I think I’m obsessed.

The touchpad, small screen and way too much gloss black plastic are my biggest issues. And the cost seems disproportionally high for this vehicle. You didnt seem terribly excited about the performance. How do you think it compares to the GV80 with the twin turbo, more power, rear wheel drive bias and 22" wheels overall?
