A bomb on par with JOHN CARTER, Gore Verbinski's western is an epic blockbuster we don't get these days with solid performances from both Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp. So, join us as we revisit the remake of the classic serial and show you why THE LONE RANGER is a great movie that deserves a second look.

I saw this with my grandfather who would tell me about how he would listen to the old Lone Ranger radio show and map out where the Lone Ranger and Tanto were going on a map he had. He loved this movie and I’ve never seen him smile the way he did after that movie. He past away last November and this movie reminds me of him every time I see it. I love this movie and I really hope one day we might be able to get a sequel.

I enjoyed this movie. The controversy over the Tonto character is overblown in my opinion. Depp played the part as a three dimensional character with emotional depth and humanity.
Saw this once when I was 14, and I remember really liking it and being shocked that it had such a bad reputation. Same story with John Carter.
I distinctly remember bringing this movie up to a friend and then he proceeded to trash on me for enjoying it. AND HE HADN'T EVEN WATCHED THE DAMN THING 😂.
That's when my innocent little ass realized that the world is very tribalistic and that often people will take the popular opinion of whatever social group/class that they belong to...
Or whatever the internet tells them.

I loved the film and so was my family. We bursted our gut watching it. I was so sure about the success of the film I never looked up its review.
Imagine my surprise when I came across youtube video about movies listing it as a bad movie.

It’s worth every second for that finale, first time I saw it I just sat there gaping. It was perfect, the music and visual beats were spot on...I think I need to go rewatch it right now.
It was bad because it was long and boring. It tried to be like Pirates Of The Caribbean, but failed in every way.

Caught Lone Ranger at an early screening with a couple of friends, and we all loved it. We couldn’t stop singing it’s praises and I was so shocked at the amount of negative reviews when it was released. I expected it to be huge.

Most people assume over budget = bad movie so they skip it.
i think people are more tired of stupid "blockbusters" and johhny depp...dont sayin this is bad movie but it def. looks like stupider pirates and that was hardly clever movie. And westerns are basically dead. there are many reasons not just overbudget...most dont care about budgets
I went in expected an over the top Johnny Depp Gore Verbinski action fest. That's exactly what I got and enjoyed almost every minute of it.
I loved The Lone Ranger. Maybe I enjoyed it so much because I wasn't expecting it to be so damn good.

I absolutely agree, a brilliant film and one of the few "anti hero" films out there. There are scenes in this film that truly are masterful..
The locomotive mockups were so well made that they survive to be used in other movies, they'll never dethrone the Official Movie star locomotive.
when I saw this movie with my brother-in-law we were constantly looking at each other, asking ourselves why this movie was getting bad reviews.
Totally agree, this was a very good movie on a lot of levels and was woefully mistreated by critics etc. This could easily have started a series of films much like Pirates did if it had happened at a different time
Completely agree, I love this movie because it fuses comedy with drama and sadness of the struggle of that timeline... future classic for sure

I really like this movie. I’ve alway felt like I was one of the few people who did. It was fun and I would have love to see more of these films.

The end scene with the cheesy song was so epic, I watch this movie nearly daily.
I caught it at home one evening as was being shown on tv not expecting much, now it's one of those films I really regret not seeing on the big screen. It's so much fun, & has a lot of heart exactly what an action popcorn movie should be.

My take on something mentioned. I came up with a rule, the longest time ago. And it concerns movie critics...
If both Siskel and Ebert gave a movie "thumbs down", you should go see the movie...
Don't go with professional reviewers, they have to create traffic by being "edgy" and make a name for themselves by sticking out of the dreary mass of reviews.
Go with your peers, a group of people you know enjoy about the same type of movie you like or at least whose honesty you can make an estimate about...
Thank you so much for this! I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and have always wondered what the hate towards it was about (the same goes for "John Carter" and "Alien: Resurrection"). While I can understand the complaint about yet another white guy playing a Native American (an issue that I, a devout liberal, am admittedly uncomfortable with), still Johnny Depp's performance was to my mind very good and not insulting. Again thanks for defending this movie.
I actually liked this movie. I'm very familiar with the characters and stories, though I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fan, per se. I've heard most of the radio shows, seen the TV shows. cartoons, and the movie from the early 80s. So I was intrigued as to how they would tackle this things, especially how Tonto would be handled. For the most part, it went well. My big issue was with Hammer's Lone Ranger - he was hardly a hero, and a bumbling mess. I know what they were trying to do, and I don't disagree with it, but it didn't really work. But I enjoyed it, and thought the movie deserved more love than it got.
The producers obviously knew this was a one-and-done thing, since the ending was just that... and ending.
This movie was great. It was so fun to watch. I'm sad that it didn't spawn a franchise like was planned but what can you do? The Western is a great genre and I would love to continue to see more popcorn flicks like this in future.
What a great series on this channel...I appreciate contrary opinions that aren't spoken just to be different, but delivered in a well thought out and interesting set of arguments. Clearly a channel with videos that a great deal of time and effort are spent on and I look forward to more!

I watched this movie recently for the first time (after avoiding it when it was released) and thought it was pretty good. My only issue are some moments where the tone doesn't work, like when the cavalry is slaughtering the native americans while at the same time the lone ranger and tonto are comically running from an explosion underground.
I wish this could have gotten a sequel at least.

LOVED THIS MOVIE! Saw it at the theater several weeks after it came out cuz I thought everyone would go to see it. I was the only one in that theater and enjoyed the Hell out it!! If they'd have played it over again immediately I would have stayed and watched it again! Wish they had made a sequel!
This is One Of My Favorite Westerns EVER... Tombstone, Long Riders, Young Guns and The Lone Ranger.
I liked it. I thought the characters were intriguing and well worth another look. I didn't enjoy it as much as John Carter, but it was a good film. I will say that I liked Armie Hammer, but his portrayal wasn't especially memorable.
Never a Long Ranger fan so I’m not a purist but my main issue with this flick was the length. Waaaaayyyy too long with too many weird subplots or digressions but I was entertained and thought it was fun. If cut to a svelt 2 hrs I think it would be more successful

I'd call both Zorro and Wild Wild West better "popcorn cinema" and there is no real reward in TLR to compensate for it like at least being "Purist" to the radio and TV stories of yore. It just has weird Depp, which seems for some people to be enough to immediately enjoy a movie.
Agree.. Too Many Subplots and a lack of direction... Trying to be Too Many Things all at once... It could have been just as long but it had to cut back on the subplots or Commit to them! Many are there but never resolved or There but never go anywhere!
But overall, I loved the movie... And i have already said it - But going to say it again... SILVER THE HORSE UPSTAGED JOHNNY DEPP AS THE FUNNIEST THING IN THE MOVIE! THAT IS ENOUGH TO SELL THIS MOVIE! JOHNNY DEPP UPSTAGED BY A F**KING HORSE!
This is ne of my favourite films of all time. I thought it was going to be a disaster and found myself clapping from joy from the sheer inventiveness of the last half an hour. Make up, music, production design, costumes are top notch.

Funny to see this as I just saw another video touting the same thing from another youtube channel recently. I ALWAYS loved this movie and so last night I watched it with my wife and she liked it too. It truly is a very underrated film with some outstanding editing and directing. I think it got bad reviews because of the whole "cultural appropriation" PC nonsense but Depp did a very good job with the role. An all around good movie!
I remember my father took me to see this movie for my 13th birthday and I remember loving it but then I was surprised to learn people hated it then I revisited again 4 years and still loving it
I saw this at a hotel in Tombstone Arisona when I was 14. I didn’t really know what the movie was and I was one of the few people watching it. It was amazing and I hope it gets the proper trilogy treatment.

He was made an honorary member of the Comanche Nation prior to filming The Lone Ranger. I loved the movie and most of the people I know from my wife's reservation didn't seem to have a problem with Depp playing Tonto.
Also one of the only accurate depiction of what a wendigo was thought to be.... no antlers... just a cannibal who craves flesh ( I’m from Ontario 🇨🇦) natives around here love that... I watched a few in front of me at the theatre get giddy at the mention of it in Pet Semetary

A brilliant POV on a very underrated film. An entertaining and well plotted folly.
I think people were expecting a more lighthearted "doesn't take itself too seriously" tone similar to Pirates of the Caribbean and it ended up being pretty dark and gritty although it does have moments of Depp-esque comedy. I can actually see why it was so expensive - tons of expensive actors, tons of stunts, tons of special effects, costumes, makeup, filming on location, etc.
I am always amazed at The Lone Ranger 2013, I've seen it many times on physical media, it is extraordinarily funny and very well crafted. I am still shocked at its failure, I don't understand, I just love this movie . Thank you so much for a much needed video.
I seen it on pay tv ( netflix.. hulu..can't remember which one) not knowing of its existence before hand, and I thought it was great.. I didn't think Johnny Depp portrayed native Americans poorly, in fact just the opposite.

Yeah, I also did like this movie. Pretty much all of the points that you mentionated are thoughts of my own. Heck, even Quentin Tarantino added it to the list of his favorite movies from 2013. This movie deserved more love. So underrated.

When I was like 6 or 7 (Being 14 now) I begged my dad that I could watch The Lone Ranger, he previewed it, and he said that it was too violent for me, but I could watch it in the future once I'm older. I just watched it, and I freaking loved it, yeah sure, it's imagery was a bit too mature for a Disney film, but I had a blast watching it. And that train chase is worth the 3 hours of run time. It's sad that people disliked it so much.
I really enjoyed the film and think it’s underrated. I have to disagree with you on the casting of JD as Tonto. He was good in the role, but having a white guy play a Native American was never going to be a good look.
Why is that so hard to understand. Just allow a native American to play the cultural part. If Tonto was Asian then allow an Asian to play the part. Allow the door to stay open for a diverse population in entertainment
True, however look at other films like RDJ playing tropic thunder or white chicks

Great video! My unpopular opinion is Andy Dick’s 2011 comedy “Division III: Football’s finest” is insanely hilarious and extremely rewatchable!!!
Unpopular Opinion: Wild Wild West was and still a badass, kick ass, awesome steampunk western movie to this day. I still remember seeing the movie in theaters back in the summer of 1999. And it still holds up to me to this day.
A lot of people say that Disney pissed away too much money on the production. The reason they spent so much money was because they put a lot of effort into the practical effects. If you watch the behind the scenes, they had to build the trains from scratch and build train tracks in the middle of the desert. They also had the actors do their scenes when the trains are moving.
It did meander a little midway through,but it found its saving grace in its climax.

HEY!! Easy does it partner... I Like "Wild Wild West"! It's fun (for '98) re-watch it, go into it without the stigma that it carries with it, and you will have a good time

It may not live up to the original radio serials and the TV show starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels (storywise), but I still watch and enjoy this movie, though, especially with the aforementioned train scene near the end.
Just saw it.. And I thuly enjoyed it! Great characters and actors, nice sets and music plus a good story. I really enjoyed it! Don´t ynderstand why it is not popular.
I might see it now. What stopped me before was the crow on Tanto’s head. It looked inconvenient.

The last 30 min is pure cinema, as are the first 30. It stumbles in the middle sometimes but idk why it got so much hate. I revisit this movie all the time. Glad someone else feels the same way!!!

I don’t understand why people didn’t like this movie.
In THE LONE RANGER, they play the WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE twice. I know it's the theme from the old show, but it doesn't fit with what's happening onscreen in *this* version. It feels like it comes from another movie. Although one can feel the 150 minute running time, I was never actually bored. In fact, the first big action sequence (with the train) was one of my favorites of 2013. Tonto constantly says that nature is out of balance. What's out of balance is the tone! Whenever something funny is supposed to happen, they show something very silly. Whenever something serious is supposed to happen, they show something very dark. It's too extreme! They spend too much time showing the title character as someone clueless that, by the time we have to take him seriously as the righteous outlaw, it's almost impossible. No actor could've made him feel like a true hero, but Armie Hammer at least makes him a sympathetic and relatable character. We all love Johnny Depp when he plays goofy characters, because he's very good at it, but that's not the same thing as goofing around in front of the camera. It feels like he's not taking this movie as seriously as he should. Also, when we finally learn about Tonto's past and why he is the way he is, it doesn't really matter. We never see that this adventure helped him with his inner demons. Since the 2 protagonists lack development, they both felt like sidekicks. I kept waiting for the actual hero to appear! Well, at least the 2 actors have chemistry. That's admirable, considering that the script writers never show why they go from strangers who hate each other to best friends. The movie is told as a flashback. Old Tonto is telling the story to a kid. They cut back and forth between the past and the present way too many times. It takes us out of the story.

It's wrong to mention the behind-the-scenes drama in a movie review if it's just for gossip. It's not wrong in cases like this where the troubled production is reflected on screen. There were obvious last-minute re-edits. For example, I thought that Danny would be revealed to be John's son. There were hints. When they first meet, John says "He looks just like his father when he was his age" and Rebecca looks down to the floor. Also, when Danny is holding a gun, his hand is shaking and Rebecca says "Just like your dad." John was the one with the shaky fingers who couldn't fire a gun.

Lone Ranger movie is so very underrated.
I actually saw the first time 2 years ago and ended up getting it on bluray.
Most people miss that this film is told as a tall tale told by what i gather to be an octogenarian to a small child. It's supposed to be a little ridiculous. I wish they'd gotten a sequel where it opened with Tonto telling the story to a bunch of kids and then an old John Reid enters. The two, not having seen each other for decades, would embrace and reminisce for just a moment before Reid would say, "That's not how I remember that one...let me tell you kids another story..." and the adventure would begin in earnest. And it should've been called The Lone Ranger and Tonto. A third could've been called the Lone Ranger rides again.
Johnny Depp said that the critics wrote reviews months before the movie even came out, and I think he might have a point. This movie was what it was supposed to be - fun. It was marketed wrong and the studio kind of shot themselves in the foot with the approach they took, they could have done so much better when trying to sell it to fans, they could have taken the movie to darker places and focused more on the racist views that people held towards Native Americans and tried to send a message with the story (even those critics said Johnny Depps' performance was racist, completely ignoring the fact he has Native American ancestors), as well as making it a fun movie at the same time. I know it's a fine line to walk but it could have been done, they have so many producers and screenwriters at their disposal to be able to do so.
This movie deserved so much better than the way it was treated. I've been a fan of Johnny Depp for a long time, but I wasn't expecting Captain Jack Sparrow and I didn't get that, so I was happy, I guess other people were expecting a kind of POTC feel and were upset they didn't get it, but it is what it is.
I really enjoyed this movie, and although it may not be one of Depp's best performances, I still enjoy it when I watch it.
Because, after all, that's what movies are about - just having a good time and escaping into an entertaining story for a few hours.
Not saying that it's a bad movie in the least but they pretty much got everything wrong about the LR and has no resemblance to the original spectacular hero. His backstory detailed by his adventures on the radio, tv show, books, and comics involves Reid being the only surviving ranger of an ambush massacre of 6 Texas Rangers, including his younger brother. They were after Cavendish and his gang but doublecrossed by their guide who led them into the ambush. Tonto, who happened upon the bloody scene, rescued and cared for him. Reid made the mask out of his dead brother's vest while Tonto dug a 6th grave so the killers would believe the entire team was dead, allowing Reid to safely plan his retaliation without arousing suspicions. Already a veteran lawman, he possessed extraordinarily accurate gunslinging/fighting skills, allowing him to dispatch enemies painlessly as he did not want them to suffer, regardless of their crime. He always risked his life to save an innocent even if he'd certainly get killed and put himself in deadly cliffhanging situations barely escaping by the skin of his teeth. In short, The Lone Ranger should've done for this movie what Indiana Jones did for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shame though, since this movie had great production values and acting. Better marketing? Perhaps, though i still think the original version is no doubt much more exciting and powerful than this one. Maybe a reboot in a few years?.....

it was very nearly a film d'auteur. It has it's own geometry. I watched it twice. don't recall precisely but the film has a geometry. never understood why it's so despised. Even A.O. Scott disliked it.
I recall Depp being cast as Tonto i was shocked. I agree Disney didn't market the film or John Carter well at all both are films i enjoyed tremendously. I think Depp and Hammer said in interviews that the criticism was based on the budget rather than the content
I very much enjoyed this film. It gets pretty dark and gritty, but it's also pretty fun as well. I could never understand why people HATE this movie so much. This falls into the same category as "Wild Wild West" with Will Smith as movies that people viscerally HATE that I really enjoy. Awesome video though. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was a good western and just action film in general. Next you should do John Carter which seems to have same problem as this. Thanks again. I'm really digging this channel.

It was a fun watch for sure and my daughter loves it. On the Indian and Depp controversy I see both sides Depp did an amazing job in his role but there are so many talented native American actors I was disappointed Disney didn't take a chance on someone but I know they needed a name for the movie. Overall though a really fun movie and good western.
By far my favorite scene in the movie is with dep using the ladder to get to the other train

I heard all of the bad press and didn't see the movie until it was released on video. My loss... I really enjoyed it and wish I had seen it in the theater. Same with John Carter except I don't even remember hearing about it before it went to video.
I saw it and remember thinking meh. I have no desire to see this movie again. Considering I don't really remember the movie, it must not have made much of an impression on me. Maybe I'll check it out again when I have nothing better to do.
I loved this movie. It had its share of flaws but the last half hour was one of the best action scenes I have ever seen in a movie theater.
The climax on the train was worth the price of admission.
The ONLY criticism I could levy is that, in this day and age, Tonto maybe SHOULD have been played by an Indigenous actor. But even then, in a complete vacuum Lone Ranger totally rocks. It's a fun and well-made movie with good performances across the board for the kind of story it is.
