  • November 22, 2003 - It was supposed to be a routine “mail drop” for the DHL cargo plane. A war is going on, but they are just there to carry the soldiers’ letters from home. The three-man flight crew took off from Baghdad’s Saddam Hussein Airport without a hitch. Shortly after take-off, an anti-aircraft missile fired on the ground hit the Airbus A300.

From Season 3 Episode 2 "Attack Over Baghdad": The flight crew was thrown into the fight for and for their lives. It was all witnessed on camera from a passing military helicopter, now seen for the first time.
A wing was on fire and all the hydraulics were gone. The omens were not good: No one in history had ever managed to fly and land a commercial plane so badly damaged.
The flight crew’s performance under fire is unequalled in modern aviation history.

The Japanese pilots did not fail. These pilots in this video were undeniably heroes, but the Japanese pilots had to do the same thing with no horizontal stabilizers while steering the giant plane through high mountains. "There's no danger money for crew"? I understand that most struggling experienced aircraft captains will take whatever work they can get, but I think that I'd rather struggle than to fly out of Baghdad Airport during the war than to possibly risk my life during every flight. Yeah, no. Sorry. I love my country, and I understand that somebody has to do it, and alot of people did, but not I. Let me also say that I applied to become a US Marine, but I was turned away as I am a childhood cancer survivor (even though I was 18 years old and in the best shape of my life as I was 5'10" 175 lbs and could bench press 325 lbs, I could dead lift 500 lbs, and I had very little body fat). They turned me down due to my medical history. I aced my ASVAB tests, and I didn't tell the doctors that I was a cancer survivor, but you can't hide anything from the US government. This was before 9/11, but a few days after 9/11 they called me 3-4 times per day, but I was in such shock after watching those towers fall live on TV that I laid on my couch for the next 3-4 days in shock just flipping between news channels. Not to mention that they had rejected me like I wasn't good enough, but now I was...there was something wrong with that that didn't sit well with me. I struggled with that decision for the next couple of weeks, but I couldn't just go there and settle for suddenly being good enough to serve my country due to extreme circumstances. It's a decision that I made that will haunt me for the rest of my life...

Hydraulic systems already have a high redundancy, 3 in this case. All 3 systems being damaged at the same time is a very rare occurrence.
Technically, it may be possible to have a higher level of redundancy for any system on board, but this does not happen because it's too expensive.
Like the PCA system that is mentioned. It's possible to fit as is shown by the fact that it's fitted on aircraft carrying VIPs, but for general aviation it's rejected for economical reasons.

My guess is they did the math on the cost of implementing such a system vs the benefit and decided the benefit wasn't worth it.
Not every preventive measure is worth taking, and in the government's case, they probably looked at the total value of the average number of lives lost due to a loss of hydraulics and estimated it to be lower than the cost of implementing a PCA system.

cool comments and all that yes incredible flying, but isnt it shocking that there is software to regulate throttle manouvering but hey thats to expensive :S as always money is more important then human life, and for rockets ?? civilian aircraft can also be equiped with ground to air rocket detection systems and flares that can even fire automatically to mislead the rockets. Also to expensive i guess.
