Ōtomo Shogunate - how Japan became Christian / CK3

- In the 16th century, during the time of the discovery of Japan by Europeans and a period of long-running civil war - Sengoku Jidai, Christianity had a chance to become something big for this country. But then the conditions were bad for its development - the most powerful Catholic daimyo Ōtomo Sōrin was defeated by Shimazu at the Battle of Mimigawa in 1578, being numerically superior, and lost his chance to unify Kyushu Island and further fight for the title of shogun. And the new rulers of Japan considered Christianity dangerous to state security, not without reason, by the way, and therefore first in 1587 imposed restrictions on missionary activity, and then, in 1614, completely banned this religion. But what if he had succeeded? In this video I will tell the story about the formation of the Christian Otomo Shogunate using Crusader Kings 3 with the Shogunate mod.

I always loved the idea of Japan becoming Christian not because I believe in it but as someone who studies religion my favorite part is how religions adapt to new cultures and incorporate ideas from both sides
Similar of how Japan became Buddhist.
Lot of compromises and build into local folklore, but I wouldn't be surprised if a localization to japanese needs simply dwells into henotheism, like indian christians and jews.
We had the underground japanese christians and south korea is basically a christian nation, if you exclude the non-religious which are the majority.
Results: weird ass cults (like the unification church), total destruction of any form of orthodoxy and paganic stuff being incorporated on a daily basis. Not a big fan of religious syncretisms or huge reformations, even if they are fascinating
I love the idea because I'm Catholic but the variations would indeed be fascinating like the prayers in Nahuatl or Mayan
Looks like Kirishitan Otomo Japan is a trend right now.
Well, may San Goku bless you.
Really?
@@ronin2387 Yeah, some alt history channels have been covering this topic.
When I saw the Otomo Christian Shogunate, I thought you're playing EU4. But this twist reminds me of "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"
That or Shogun total war and their being the “American Japan” for them being the first to have fire arms in the game
More like portuguese inquisition
The Portuguese has sent their regards to Asia
It will always amaze me that the Dutch were SO SALTY that the Papacy was still going strong in spite of the pr*testant reformation that they aided in the persecution of Christians by the shogunate solely so that the Church wouldn't be credited with the evangelization of Japan.
This is amazing, Mr. Synthist. I really like the idea of Japan becoming an East Asian Christian country, and this deserves a part two, where an earlier united Japan under the Otomo Shogunate conquered the declining Ming China along with Korea and replaced the Heaven Mandate by making the Emperor of Japan the new Emperor of China.
And how would that work exactly? Because you know, they tried that. And failed. Miserably. I can't imagine a Japan inevitably riddled with civil instability and feudal rebellions (anybody remember the Ikki? They wouldn't just bend over) would succeed where Toyotomi Hideyoshi didn't.
It sounds like this shogunate took its time much more to stabilize. Even considering its initial instability due to religious clashes, a slower consolidation could lead to eventually having a much stronger army. Also, a big reason the IRL Oda shogunate lost in Korea is because their navy was inept. In this regard, the Otomo would likely be far more competent (especially with far more adoption of European tech), leading to a full occupation of Korea being far more feasible.
You should make a video about Imperator: Rome
Desu vult-o?
Nobody expects the Japanese Inquisition!
Deusu Vuruto
Orthodox Christianity has a strong presence in northern Japan. Due to the close proximity to Russia. Many Orthodox missionaries travelled to Japan and established dioceses.
Another banger like always
Very interesting story telling, keep it up
i am definitely for a part 2
What about making an episode of China becoming Orthodox. Eventually the Manchu unify and threaten Qing, but Russia stepped in and helped ming but in exchange started spreading and supporting the Orthodox faith in China
Like and great video.👍👍Great work as always.
Wow, i really hope to see what happens next in this timeline.
Man we need some Vicky 3 videos, I miss the 20th century alt-history!
I think it would be helpful to have some sort of marking or something indicating when its althistory and when its historical.
I love your vids
Interesting I really enjoyed the video
I could see an alternative route (though probably not possible in game), if creating a second Rome by ceding some land to the Papal State so that Japan could become the center of Catholic authority in Asia.
First, A Christian Japan with a wholesome reconciled ending, now how about a Spanish Catholic Crusade of East Asia using the Asia Expansion mod!
Man that kinda Especially Part That YOu make Well Japanese Anglicanism Chistianity Decide to make EMperor is Symbol of Church Which latter This will become Threat as Otomo in later Centuries Man I can Imagine Alot what will look like for Your Japanese Otomo Ending in Future

Want to watch this video but honestly, the accent is...difficult, and makes it where I have to rewind and cut on captions. You should try to get a narrator.

Great video. Not sure what game you'd use, but I'd love a part 2 to see how the war against Joseon and Ming goes.
Epic 👍

I would love to see this series continued in EU4 or Victoria 3, possibly modded with a converter or at least altered to create the Christian Shogunate? Either way, great storytelling and use of real history, it was super engaging.
Part two with a Eu4 custom nation would be cool
White dresses at weddings aren't Christian, they're Victorian.
Не думал я, что в крестах получится такие интересные истории создавать)
Очень уж контента там, к сожалению, мало.
Good video
