    -Frank Gehry (Architecture)

    I think any class be it masterclass or skillshare, etc. are really great for creative endeavors... but for business, money making, becoming a politician (dear God that's an awful class idea for the record) every class is useless at best and a straight up scam at worse.

    • @Lacewise
      @Lacewise 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +20

      I think part of the issue is a lot of real business skills aren’t taught outside university because they’re too unethical.
      EDIT: I would NEVER use them, and I think a lot of these paid classes would be better if they focused on business ethics.

    • @sparks6177
      @sparks6177 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      @@Lacewisethat’s true but practical skills are also hard to market these days. Either they are so specialized that almost nobody will pay to learn them or the skill has already been taught much better in a TH-cam video. Business skills especially can be hard to teach because there’s no roadmap that says do this and succeed. And well masterclass seems to have a problem saying that it will be more like learn these skills, then work really hard, hope to get lucky and eventually you’ll be moderately wealthy. But you don’t need mark cuban to teach you that, any small business owner can teach that but they aren’t big names that draw attention. So mark cuban is relegated to teaching his extremely personalized journey to success that was 90% luck and 10% skill, and that’s not a dig against mark cuban, he probably would have been wealthy regardless but making a million dollars for owning a small up and coming tech startup is like winning the lottery 3 times in a row sort of luck.

    • @Lacewise
      @Lacewise 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sparks6177 I don’t think the second part is true. A lot of TH-cam videos teaching practical skills are terrible. Sometimes because the TH-camr is new to teaching, but more often because they don’t expect their audience to rely on TH-cam videos to learn a skill. A lot of them also, relatedly, either assume you have background knowledge or that you can figure out the how to put the essential knowledge together with advanced beginner knowledge. (Skipping over “novice”territory altogether.) This quickly bumps into “trade secrets” by which I mean, things that professionals won’t tell you unless you’re in training (or, in the modern era, are reading a book or paying for a class). You _can_ still find a lot of that stuff if you’re willing to look through hundreds of hours of material and three different mediums. But not all of it. And that adds a significant amount of time to learning.
      Paid services like Masterclass are meant to sort through that for you and bring a lot of those tips (that have dissipated over many year) and Masterclass specifically takes it up a notch by specifically recruiting people who are famously successful in their field and all of whom have public speaking/workshop/training employees credentials.

      And even then, I'd struggle to find any mainstream skill that can't be 'mastered' (at least to the skill level you'd get from Master Class) for free from other sources. Seriously, the resources for animation, coding, music production, etc, that are available on youtube alone are insane. I think ultimately even if they weren't trying to make a scam website. Masterclass is something that inevitably becomes a scam because most celebrities don't know how to teach, they don't have the motivation to sit down for a long time and actually consider how stuff should be taught so the result is kind of haphazard and incomplete. And because its celebrities it's expensive for what it is.
    Like with someone like Gordon Ramsay, sure he's a good cook, but you could probably learn more from an experienced cooking teacher or even as TH-cam has proven, a competent home cook. We don't even need to speculate about this, Gordon Ramsay posts to TH-cam and yet there are so many better TH-cam channels for learning how to cook than his

    • @jeffseidl

      Someone bought be a membership as a gift for a year- this is exactly what I found as well. The Gordon Ramsey class was good- but nothing you can’t learn for free here or in a cookbook. Just doesn’t seem worth the cost when so much cooking tutorials and guides are available elsewhere.

    This video made me think about this play I saw recently, it was a rendition of the first act of Our Town, acted entirely by beanie babies. The director, casting director, choreographer and “stage manager” (if familiar with the play you’ll know what I mean here) ended up blowing my mind, brilliant play (I really wasn’t sure what to expect sitting at a person’s dinner table with a couple friends and couple friends friends while they held up beanie babies across the table and did voices), and afterward while walking to our respective cars, one of the friend’s friends was like “man I really hate plays and I really hate sincere artistic expressions but that was amazing!” and I found it so funny that she made this conscious decision to do that. Our mutual friend asked her why she hates it and why did she come then and she said “oh it’s just so intimate when people just do something sincere, it makes me so uncomfortable but that’s why I go out of my way to experience others doing it like going to karaoke or open mics, because I could never do that.” Anyhow just a thought on sincerity.

      What you put in is what you get.
      Yeah, like with any paid online course, the real benefits depend on the efforts of the student. If you pay for an online course but you don't actually go through the classes and material for months, that's on you. Same thing applies to paying for streaming services that you don't end up using. These online classes aren't just like streaming shows where you just watch and commentate. You have to actually do stuff and apply yourself to the advice given by the MasterClass Instructors, who are successful legends in their fields.
      And again, your MasterClass experience will vary depending on what subjects and topics you're interested in. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't like the Mark Cuban and Howard Schultz MasterClasses because I think billionaires are bastards and all that. But again, it's my decision to click on their videos. I can always choose to watch a MasterClass from someone I like on a topic that I'm interested in. Like, if you have any interest in Cooking, Writing, Acting, or Filmmaking, you have a literal treasure trove of legendary experts in the field whose advice would be worth the annual subscription several dozens times over.
      Like, if Pinely had chosen to watch the MasterClasses of people he actually likes and respects in the creative field, like Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Aaron Sorkin, Steve Martin, etc. , I'm pretty sure he would have loved the lessons.

So it isn’t that i don’t know that. But I personally haven’t found much helpful content from the courses I have tried so far. But I will take your advice and give it a shot

  • @masodemic4509
    @masodemic4509 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I was gifted a Masterclass subscription once and I immediate went to start a class with Jane Goodall and Amy Tan, whose works in their respective fields I really admire. And while I could tell that they had some very useful information and are extremely adept at what they do, neither lesson left any lingering knowledge or feeling in me. Which I think is not the fault of the professionals but of the class structure, in that there is no structure.
    Usually in a class, or an educational TH-cam video, the "teacher" has to present something following varying degrees of lesson plan. Take Crashcourse for example. They're effective because they are concise lessons, not autobiographical.
    Basing the structure on a dinner may sound cool, but in a dinner you are participating in an active discussion, not just listening to an autobiography.
