I ordered a NGG somewhat recently and it arrived in poor conditions. I chopped off all the roots to a stub and water propped and was amazed with how resilient it is 😦 it grew back amazingly. Can’t wait for mine to eventually look like yours 🙏🏻 😊
I just love your videos! I've been collecting Hoya for about 4 years and love to learn as much as I can. (I also haven't had a drink in 126 days!!) I'd love to see you make a video on how you root your props. I still struggle getting some to root. Sending good vibes from Washington state!
Hey, hey!!! Congratulations!!!! That’s a really big deal. I can definitely show props in the next video or two. I’m working on a longer range project of testing ten substrates. Hang in there. You’ve got a great start 😊
I've only seen NGG a couple of times locally and they were sad looking plants that didn't tempt me and didn't make me want to add them to my wishlist. I may have to rethink that after seeing yours. Very pretty!! Though the plants at all of the Lowe's in my area are generally crap, I did find a $20 Krimson Princess with wide leaves and a $17 Sp Aff Burtoniae, both of which I love. In fact, the Krimson Princess, though very common, might be my favorite plant. It's huge and gorgeous and -- after suffering plant abuse at Lowe's -- could probably endure the apocalypse without dropping a leaf. I have many that are a lot harder to find and cost me a lot more, but that one is still special in my eyes.
@@soberplantguy Oh, I don't know. I'd be willing to back the crap level of the three Lowe's nearest to me against most any others. The Sp Aff Burtoniae was so sodden with water that -- despite my putting it in a southeast window -- it was still soaking wet three weeks after I bought it. I was trying to give it time to acclimate before I repotted it, but I couldn't take it anymore and just went ahead and repotted. I figured that the stress of repotting had to be better than the stress of drowning. I watch other TH-camrs finding all kinds of amazing plants at their local Lowe's and wonder what kind of magical land they live in.
@amymarshall1829 when I get one that is soaking wet like that, and how long it's been that wet is an unknown, I always pop it out of the pot and place the whole thing on an old folded up towel, then into a plastic bin, like a bus tub or a kitty litter tray. You can wick out the water, and even switch out for a dry towel a couple times, and save a plant, sometimes.
I love my NGG. I was lucky enough that a plant group I'm in in my city did a Christmas party, and one of the other members brought several NGG plants for everyone. I was so thrilled. It's my second favorite Hoya after my Krimson Queen, which was my very first Hoya.
Have never seen a video highlighting the most thirsty plants vs least thirsty plants. Of course they would be ones in your collection, but I would be very interested. I did discover on my own that the NNG was as you describe. I moved mine into a glazed pot to keep from drying it past the no return point.
That's a really interesting thought. I wonder if there's a way to break that down into a more generalized pattern. That's really something for me to look at. Thanks so much!
NGGs are still pretty popular here in MN. Just saw a plant in a 3" pot on sale for $60 (4/5 leaves). Still too expensive for me. I see them in local Hoya club sales, every so often, for a good price, but they get snatched up right quick! I have very limited space, so I'm going to stick with my small-leaf bebes.
I love the small leaved Hoya! It's good to know your space. Very challenging to grow a plant well in an environment that doesn't suit it. Cheers from down here in Iowa 😀
That's a hoya on my wish list. I've been thinking of going more with your grow mix versus mine using perlite, bark and potting soil. . How often do you find you need to repot? Did you have a hard time finding smaller coco chips??? You have great content in your videos. Thank you fellow Iowan. It's a beautiful evening down in Southern Iowa. I'm glad you forget things and have to stop and come back. It always makes me chuckle. Thank you
It’s Legigo brand. Got it from Amazon. It’s almost all chip/little to no filler (fibers). Great stuff. This plant has had more upgrades than usual-soooo thirsty. But on average, not often. Every second year? Or at least freshen them up. And yes, what a gorgeous evening!!
Hey Dave👋! I just purchased the least expensive NGG i could find on Etsy 4 leaves for $28. That's a good deal. I had gven up on it for a while but when i saw it last night I had to grab it st thst price. I hope it grows well. And, NO, most hoya does not like growing in small pots! Once I complete my wish list hoyas, 4, that's it. ( or will it be...🤔) Thanks Dave for your sense of humor and sharing! Dee, NY
Just discovered your channel and it’s helping me get through some plant chores today! You commented on how you shouldn’t treat a newly potted hoya like an established plant. Can you make a video elaborating on this?
Wahoo! Glad to have you here. That's a good video idea. I sure do have a bunch of plants that I want to get repotted, for this reason or that. Thanks much!
"Once this plant gets going...." Talking about a 3 ft long plant. LOL I have 4 new hoyas coming in tomorrow, and I'll be up to 8! ❤ Crystal Star Nursery is a great site for hoyas in Canada. Or dangerous 😉🇨🇦
Hi Dave, Your New Guinea Ghost is still one of my favorite Hoya and yours is beyond exquisite!🥰. Talk about goals! The NGG is one of my top three wishlist plants and I’ll be delighted when I find mine. (It’s good to have something to look forward to)! I agree with your comment about if you have $40.00 you’ll by pass the big box stores and get a plant that you really want. I do the same and for me patience has paid off and now I have plants that may not be too rare but they are exactly what I wanted and they bring me joy. Thanks for your tips and info as well as your wonderful humor! 👌🪴🥰
Thanks, Peggy! You'll get your Ghost and I'm sure it'll be amazing 😀 I can't really keep the big box store plants alive anyway, so it's probably irrelevant as to plant choice 🤣😂🤣
Hi Dave. You mentioned growing in the tent. Do your plants live outside the tent during the hotter months or you rotate according to the season? Does that make sense? Annnd those plants that aren’t in the tent do you have a room humidifier? If so can you share the brand pls?
Oh, good question. If I'm really trying to get growth out of them, especially if they're small, they're staying in (also considering that I can give them perfect lighting in there). Others, that were basically wintering in there, are slowly coming out. I'll finally be putting the plant porch together now that it has warmed up here in Iowa. Right now it's perfect for props and seedlings, that's for sure. Cheers ☺
I’m trying to prop in perlite it’s been a journey! I don’t want to use straight soil and I am trying to swap substrate on a bunch of cuttings that I bought rooted in soils. I would have been better off letting them grow and taking new cuttings
WHAT??? That's sooo annoying. They prop as easily as any plant I have. I made seven or eight 3" pots out of the vine I trimmed. All but one went straight into a soil mix, one into perlite filled with water because it was quite floppy. All have rooted extremely well and are absolutely gorgeous. When the prices become sane, or you know someone with one, don't hesitate to get a one node, leaf plant. And don't underwater it while it's very young ☺
Yes, indeed! In fact, if you try to wrap the vine clockwise, and clip it, if it can't correct itself, it'll just kill off that vine and start another, most likely. Good question.
Of course. If you're local to Iowa City, you can grab one any time. Otherwise they should be rooted enough for shipping in the near future. You can always use my email that's in the description to check up on them. Cheers.
@@soberplantguy I find hoyas in USA are very expensive, at least from my observation of the Online Store Unsolicited Plant Talks. This is quite irrational to me ,because USA is such a big market and things are supposed to be cheaper. I know in China, the big market has dragged the prices of hoya really low. An hoya argentina princess cutting costs 30 euro but here in Germany 150 euro.
If people are willing to pay those exorbitant prices, sellers have no motivation to bring them down. The rest of us just have to be patient until the frenzy dies down.
