A piece of history, I'm glad the creators of Fallout New Vegas included this in the game, otherwise I'd probably be oblivious about it unless I'm in the area.
The plane was actually testing the "Sun Tracker", which was an experimental version of the seeker head of the Sidewinder missile. The pilot was porpoising his aircraft to test the infrared tracking abilities of the device, and he dove too low on one passed and he crashed it.
Wrong. They thought they were at a higher altitude but their altimeter was broken and the mirrored lake made it confusing to tell their depth then boom.
For a rather hum drum "corporate" style video this was a very well written, shot and edited little production. Keep up the good work "Parks Services!" I really took quite a bit away from your piece and glad it was here.
whats going to happen to it now since the water level is dropping fast? have you looked into how many feet the plane is now ? Can you make a new video ?
should be reclaimed from the bottom and placed in a building as a static display which is the best way to preserve it. Crazy that divers can go down there without a national park svc supervisor to oversee dives. If such oversight is provided to protect the plane, what a nutty situation let alone if anyone dies when diving.
that particular b-29 carried a top-secret device in the place of the top turret that was designed to collect the sun's rays and direct the beam at enemy aircraft, hence jamming all electronics and causing system failure. however, when the plane was located, the device had already been removed. theorists believe that the army sent in a recovery team in to retrieve it before it could fall into enemy hands.
in other words having a valued historic relic needs national park divers to go down with the prospective divers so wouldn't it be better protected and a magnet for visitors if it were raised and cleaned and housed in a museum?
Too bad the Park service got involved with the site. When the Park service sticks it's nose into sites like this they will first limit access to the site and then eventually close the site to the public to "protect" it from "human meddling". Their definition of "human meddling" is whenever the tax paying public appears to be having too much fun.
No, they put markers up near the site which only better shows looters where the wreckage is. This thing is slowly gonna be stripped away by looters till there is nothing left. It should be raised and put in a museum.
no that's not what happened the stupid pilot decided to do a fly over the water and he got too low! my uncle told him to freaking not do it but nope! and boom into the water. my uncle John was in that plane
Man these park rangers were so chipper back then. They probably knew this was gonna happen... But what more secrets than for our public servants to keep from us. We obviously know reclamation us full of BS.

Fallout New Vegas brought me here lol.
it still intact for 333 years, in new vegas the plane still there, in good shapes :3
It's not in good shape. It's been looted and ruined by divers.

Patrick Palomino year the world world market and world war world and this year year the world

It's good that they put the CG reanimation in black and white. Much more believable now
it almost didn't have me fooled until i noticed the lack of colour and realized it must be genuine, as colour didn't exist back then

Wait 268 years.
I wonder what the depth of the wreck is now with the low lake levels? Does anyone know or have an idea?
Patrolling the mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
attach ballasts to each wing
Fallout new vegas anyone?

Well you won't have to worry about that. It's almost out of the water. Got about 50 ft til it is visible from the sky.
How long until this will be on dry ground?
very cool video, and love all these funny comments about Fallout...
@Lake Mead What is the depth now that the water levels have changed?
Fallout brought me here.
fallout new vegas - only reason i came here
Great video, very informitave.
Since the recent drought, the plane seems to have deteriorated a bunch more.

Wrong again
“Don’t touch it” as you see the first diver touching the plane
2 questions: 1. Is this dive still available for recreational diving or diving with tours? 2. What is the difficulty of this dive
You would have to be experienced to get to this plane in lake mead but there is a lot of other sunken stuff in that lake thats easier to get to
What's its exact location to see from satellite?
So how long until this air craft is exposed?
Until 2281!
0:40 NCR ranger they're trying to steal the plane from the boomers.
@LakeMeadNRA That's a damn shame. It should be raised, and restored.
the boomers should boom the legion
RESTORE IT
Haha, this crash site is a place in Fallout New Vegas
=D
do they still allow dives, i heard they don't because people were stealing stuff out of it.
lets just say those ladies belongs to skies. I hurts the heart to see her just laying there :(
Fallout new Vegas anyone?

Come back in 2021 when the lake has dried up.
I dont really think the boomers have any chance fixing that wreck up to the point where it can fly
So many rangers.
Any Idea how long this aircraft will survive before corosion erodes it into powder?/
it'll be on dry ground before long.
I'm guessing there was alot of clumsy divers and that is why they closed the dive site?
Volare!
I can see how they salvaged it from fall it ( not ).
Any chance of raising this wreck before it corodes away forever??
mosquito1958 wait 268 years
The boomers would be proud.

456swagger that's a good thing they did ii because people were taking stuff from it

FALLOUT NEW VEGAS FTW
@mosquito1958 the enviromentalists don't want to ruin its "landmark"
no that's not what happened the stupid pilot decided to do a fly over the water and he got too low! my uncle told him to freaking not do it but nope! and boom into the water. my uncle John was in that plane
he would of drowned and that was years ago pretty old and wtf
Dude i know what happened they DID NOT drown
wowwowweebs 6633 all crew survived the crash.

HAHA! The boomers have it now!
@LakeMeadNRA You mean take away your sales
