I explored the section from the cinders to the Grand Canyon last July. I traveled with a group. July is monsoon season here, It rained the night before and while on our trip. We were traveling in 3-4 inches of water out to the Grand Canyon Air Port. We climbed the lookout tower as well. It is a trip that I will always remember. Watching your video allowed me to relive my trip. Thanks.
I really enjoy your videos! Many people post “overlanding” videos that are 30-minutes of them at camp cooking and sitting by the fire. While that is obviously part of overlanding, so is the journey. You do an excellent job of balancing the journey AND the camping! Thank you for another great one!
I’d argue that the biggest difference between normal camping and overlanding is the journey. Anyone with a Subaru or crossover can take a gravel road to a campsite. It’s the roads not found on Google maps that you can’t get to without a properly built 4x4 that makes it “overlanding.”
Brad, another great adventure! I sit back and enjoy it and I think of all the work that goes into this, We see the finished product but I also think of , all the drone footage, all the different camera angles, all the behind the scenes work and editing, narrating it all, and still having fun doing it!! Hats off to you my friend !
Brad, this volume 4 episode was just stunning. I think I got vertigo when your drone flew over the Grand Canyon edge. Though ending an epic trip with a friend is sad it just opens the door for the next adventure. God bless you and Shaun. And Regina. And your pup. Who is waiting for you.
Our priorities were tad different when we were kids. At least it was saved for when you were older and could appreciate it more. Had we seen things as kids, it would still be seen completely different when we grew up. Cool set of videos, great bucket trip
The North Rim HWY 67 is closed and locked Oct-May but there are so many Forest Roads on the sides that allow Jeeps to easily make it to many rim destinations all year round depending in snow. You are well above a Mile high in elevation
Watching this series has me stoked to see more of my home province, BC. My first 5.5 years were in Kamloops, so I really enjoy spending time in the desert. Looking forward to a time with the kids are a little older, but we still want to get out there.
it took you someone from canada to discoverbthat iconic place to camp on the edge of the grand canyon.. man what did you do or should i say notbdo in when you lived here in arizona..lol.. this state has what 3 or 4 different climate regions and its a shame i know so many people that havent been around our great state to appreciate the real beauty that arizona has to offer
Amazing trip Brad. I spent most of my childhood in Arizona as well, through High School before joining the Air Force right after. Dont feel bad, I too have yet to see the Grand Canyon in person. With my 47th bday coming in about a week, I have vowed to get back to AZ and see it with my own eyes before it's too late. Thank you for sharing your route via OnX for us all to hopefully enjoy one day. Can't wait to see what else 2025 has in store for you.
His other adventure 2+ years ago was to The WHitmore Overlook on the North Rim. He did not state it but that place should be at the top of your list IMHO
Loved this series. I actually really enjoy you and Shaun going on these trips together due to the fact you are both one of my most favorite channels to watch. Being from Arizona, I appreciate that you both shared the trip on OnX. The last comment of the video made me laugh. Only because now I am anticipating the 2 of you going to Alaska. God Bless and be safe.
Seriously I have traveled over most of the country and there is some beautiful areas but I think the southwest US is my favorite place to travel. Good video series!! Hope to see more of these.
What an incredible route. Thank you for sharing it with us. I greatly appreciate the work you guys out in to bring us this content. As always, i am looking forward to the next one. ❤️
Nutter Butters are the bomb! Especially with coffee. Loved this video. The Arizona Trail with the old airport and culminating at the edge of the Grand Canyon was awesome. Definitely putting it on the list. I will hiking the Canyon, rim to rim, in October. Likely my last big backpacking trek.😢 Might be a good time to overlanding the trail. I'm still diggin' the cowboy hats. Happy New Year!
sorry for your loss and congrats on the new one on the way they really do create a void when they're gone they really are a family member to anyone that has the privilege.. also that area was where they used to train the astronauts.. the cinders i grew up going riding there since i was a teenager we called it the cinder dunes cuz it was like going riding in the dunes in way but different cuz its cinders and not extremely fine sand but they fool people because they dont think they'll get stuck like you can easily get stuck if ur not carefull.. i grew up in the eastern part of arizona in the pinetop lakeside area and still my favorite drive is from eager/springerville and you go south thru alpine and hannagan meadow which comes out round safford i offroaded thru many off the forest roads and anyplace we could get to thruout the white mountains its the only place that takes mubmind off of everything because with scenery like that you cant help but do anything but forget about everything and just enjoy the scenery even from all the fire lookouts
Point Sublime is usually booked up in the shoulder seasons. Great that you're hitting all the standard spots along the tour, but there are so MANY more remote areas in The Arizona Strip (aka NE section above Grand Canyon) and The Grand Escalante you've not seen. After the May Overland Expo we should get a group together
PS. If I’m not mistaken your Patriot Camper has a 12v cigarette style socket. You can plug the converter directly into it without bothering with any modifications.
@@TrailRecon I bought an Anker Solis 300 to power the Starlink (space being an issue), but found it required too much attention to manage its limited power. The mini just is a hog. I have a 600Ah battery bank on my AOR Odyssey, it seemed only logical to tap into that since i did not want to carry a larger aux battery. In any case I have enough USB access sockets, I just needed a way to take the 600Ah of 12 volt power and step it up to 20 volts so i could run the Mini. The $40.00 adapter I bought would solve your Starlink power needs and your other usb needs could be solved with a simple battery bank, which I’m sure you already have. I do not know how to attach a photo or link to these comments.
Awesome content. Thanks for sharing the onX tracks. We stayed at Point sublime on the north rim last September amazing location. I wish you would have hit White Pocket just off of House Rock Road. You and Shaun would have loved it.
Anything I have that I can find a dc power cord I always buy it. To not run the inverter is my goal. As for your 0 days ,hell yes! I like zero days!!! The bucket list series is my favorite but plan more zero days
Can't wait until me and my buddy do this Trail. Going up to KC Highlights tomorrow to pick up my 50 inch Titan light bar and two Titan ditch lights. Inspired by Brad LOL.. Plus I've been wanting to check out their new location. 🤟🏻
One of the things that's most striking to me on my visits to the Grand Canyon is how we drive across the high desert flatlands of the region, then the canyon abruptly opens up before you like a gigantic gash that the surrounding terrain gives no hint of its existence. Next time you go to the North Rim, I would suggest you make Toroweap Overlook your primary destination: a near-vertical drop to the bottom of the canyon, with probably the most infamous rapids of all the whitewater raft trips below: Lava Falls. Of which, you might want to add one of those whitewater rafting trips to your bucket list. It's probably the wildest ride of any whitewater rafting trip in the entire USA, or even the world! And it will bring you up close and personal with the environmental changes in the river itself. Because Parker Dam has been built upstream (forming Lake Powell), the warm, muddy water that pioneering explorer Major John Wesley Powell described as "too thin to plow, too thick to drink" is now remarkably clear, and a bracing 56 degrees or so. And also, keep an eye out for California condors, which have been successfully resettled in the Grand Canyon area from the captive breeding program that saved the species from the brink of extinction. If you're lucky enough to have one land near you, they have zero fear of humans, and will allow you to approach them for a photo opportunity of a lifetime. Just as always, look but don't touch! And if you think your campsites were cold, you should try a campsite in the Kaibab plateau! It's well worth the visit, with abundant Douglas fir and Colorado blue spruce, but it's also over 9000 feet elevation. It frequently gets a lot of snow in winter.
Agree, you don't see it coming for many miles! I've been out to Whitmore point which is not too far from Toroweap and watched many rafters go by. I think id be interested in a 2-3 night trip, looks like fun.
Great series. Love it. I will use the OnX map, thank you. I was hoping you'd end up at Paige AZ (spectacular places there; Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Valley right near the border).
Good Morning. Incredible video. We have a truck like Sean’s. I noticed Sean had a camera does he also have a channel to watch. Thank you have an awesome day
Yet another terrific video, Brad. Thanks for producing them. Did you have to avoid any areas because trailers weren't allowed? The Patriot trailers can obviously go anywhere your truck can, but so many less capable trailers get stuck that some places have banned all trailers. BTW, it was terrific to talk with you at Overland Expo Mountain West 2024 (while Goose Gear protected us from the rain). I hope you'll attend in 2025.
Thanks! No issues with the trailer. I was hesitant when we did the Copper Mine trail (episode 2), but the trailer handled it like a champ. I'm hoping to make to at least one Expo in 2025, but more focused on adventures!
That campsite on the Grand Canyon was awesome. The only thing that would be bad about it is you show up and someone is already there. Hopefully there are several options on the rim in that area.
@ No doubt. Yeap, that is the problem with those sites high up with those epic views, many time the wind can be pretty rough. Kind of like camping on the beach (at least on the east coast), you usually have some type of wind.
What a great adventure, pull the curtain back, flying the drone while driving? Stop set up, drive by, retrieve hours or work to get a few minutes of production… thank you
Recording your adventure like this is absolutely difficult. I do it as a hobby sometimes and yeah, setting up cameras and the retrieving them can suck but like Brad said, documenting them to look back on can make it worth it.
NASA and the Apollo astronauts did a lot of training at the cinder lakes. They made a replication of the moon surface to test the moon vehicles in the volcanic sand
Have you ever seen the movie 2012? I swear the part where Woody Harrelson is on top of the mountain before the explosion goes off looks exactly like that place from where you started to the landing strip.
Jealous of all the trails you guys have out west. We don’t have public land like that here on the east coast. And anti-homeless legislation has made camping illegal in my state (Tennessee) unless it’s a specifically marked campground (or, if it’s private land, you have permission from the owners to be there). Also, nutter butters are a top tier cookie. And Dairy Queen has a seasonal Nutter Butter blizzard every year that is absolutely amazing.
@ my dad actually lives in Los Alamitos (just outside of Long Beach, CA) and it’s my dream vacation to drive my JLU out there and visit lots of these trails on the way. Unfortunately I’ve made some poor choices on my build (E rated nittos plus cheapo shocks plus stiffer aftermarket springs) means a 2000 mile drive would be… punishing. 😅 In the process of fixing that now (gonna switch my cheapo shocks for better ones that play well with my lift kit, C rated tires) and maybe in a couple years I’ll make it a possibility. Also, I’m southern east coast. A blizzard for us is… 4”. 😅
There is a Reason God had me born here. 5th generation. Never live any where else. Yes. I've seen the Southern Cross. the Mercantile Stock exchange in Chicago. flew over the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center. Still ain't nuthin better than Arizona.
You look like a dude ranch cosplayer in that new nice cowboy hat. Cowboys get the nice hat because it's an upgrade to a tool. Posers get the nice hat because they want to buy at the top.
