Cool to see more community based reviews, flatheads have so much room for improvement specially when it comes to shell designs. I do wonder what a custom mold would look like on those.
Earbuds still fill that one situation I have where I want to just listen casually. I don't use IEMs much unless I'm actively listening to music where I need that seal.
There's a really great US-based earbud builder, Newbsound. Considering my fondness for the Super-recommended Hexa, I think you'd like the tuning of Newbsounds. The imaging and details are amazing. But, I'm am earbud nerd, so...
Tomato, tomahto -- the balance of low and high frequencies changes. Looking at my measurements, in which I didn't change the source volume, it looks like both the highs come down and lows go up with the thicker pads. Whether it's filtering, sealing, or other effects I can't say as I'm not a sound engineer.
@@SuperReview It is meant to indicate the shape of the "head", the part that faces the ear canal. "Flat" isn't too strict and could include some designs that resemble wheel spokes like the Lun Sheng YE01, but doesn't always include funnel shapes like the Apple Earpod and Airpod. I've seen the term "semi in ear" for things like those, but I don't think it's universally agreed upon.
Good review I am always happy to see more earbud coverage, personally I find earbuds much more comfortable than IEMs and generally prefer them. Should really pick up one of Riku's buds sometime but I am currently enjoying the FF3 I picked up recently.
@@SuperReview Ooh, I'm gonna jump in here, and I'm not stopping at just one. :-) Top 3 - Newbsound Legend, Blur 266R and Bag o Audio Lumen 130. All made by indie builders. And, fwiw, I haven't ventured past the $150 mark in my collection.
@@SuperReview Right now it is the FF3 but hard to say how much is recency bias. That said I love the yincrow calf and still use it as well. Also have a bunch of other buds on my list to try.
I'd dabble more into earbuds if someone designs one that hooks around like IEMs and has interchangeable cables. I can't believe no one has tried to capitalize on that niche yet. SHOULD I MAYBE?
SMABAT make them but I've not tried any of their models, I hear that some have a piercing 3K spike but they have models with interchangeable drivers. Also keep an eye on Fiio, they recently released the FF1 with proprietary 2 pin removable cables, I received mine this morning and it's very impressive for it's price. They're going to do an FF3s with the same cable, if they get enough demand maybe they'll make an over ear cable for them (some stemmed earbuds will fit that way as I've seen people use them on TWS adapters, which is another option for over ear wear.)
These totally exist yincrow has multiple good options that have detachable cables and can be worn cable up, I recommend the calf but the higher end ones are supposed to be great as well. There are also many other good detachable cable options that can be worn cable up such as the FF5. Though personally I find the fit over ear not great but wings can help with stability though the same is true for IEMs that go over ear on the cable personally I can only tolerate bullet IEMs.
I love the idea of earbuds, and Riku's "Berserker 1" are easily one of the best sounding things I own, but I can never get a good, stable fit with any of the flathead buds. They're in the weird middle ground where whenever I'd want to use them, I have to opt for IEMs instead, and where I *can* use them, I'd rather use my HD600. I wish some DIYers experimented with the EarPods shell, that fits me PERFECTLY.

@@SuperReview Yincrow X6 and Vido are basically the same yes... The best bass on an earbud I've heard so far. Treble and mids are smooth and natural too.
@@r91playsindI have the 2022 model Vido and I would say they're reasonably different from an X6. They don't extend into the subbass, don't have the same air (less), and are a bit warmer. Some earlier revisions of the Vido may line up better with the X6 and are even still being sold.
9:10 is absolutely not true. High end flatheads have some of the best treble in industry. You need to try more offerings my friend. Still great video though.
Between Earbuds, IEM, and headphones , really we are talking totally different kind of reproduction , that which favor certain need over the others , as the saying goes, one size just do not fit all

Yoooo Alter Rider 3 hype
earpods are actually pretty impressive considering that foam is practically a necessity with most earbuds
Oh, and when considering foams, donut foams are a thing, too, to let through a little more mids and highs.
I am so bad at putting donut foams on a bud.
4:54 could it be that it just filters the treble out, so that bass just sounds more pronounced by comparison?
Kinda how tuning filters work for iems?

In ear canal Objects move the jaws, it can be dangerous (personal exp)
How so?
@@SuperReview when inserted in the ear canal IEMs excercise pressure where the jaws is already pressing. Usually it's not a issue but it can be.

@@SuperReview As you had noted , earbuds offer stages and imaging quite apart and different vs IEM , and it suite certain type of listening and certain genre of Music , especially when paired with sonic EQ / control ( a minimal bit of cross-fading )
my type of Music center around Classical, unplugged , Nature sound , also do my own ( as a hobby ) recording of nature sound and mixing , the immersive nature earbuds give , while will not satisfy any dynamic seekers are far more natural and mellowed out as real world sounds are ( when naturally produced , not through a speaker )
Infact most quality earbuds had amount of Bass, after all they almost always had a far larger driver than most typical IEM but they are not getting delivered straight into the ear canal so those Bass tend not to give the high dynamic and such which can be a good thing or a bad one depends on the wanting and the need , the mid range is never a problem , the high end is where earbuds can improve upon ( generally speaking ) , I wager just like IEM , if to improve upon the old trusted design , there could be multiple ways to do it
Earbuds though suffer from user operative most , and this also apply to those on-the ear headphones , leakage of sonic energy due to non optimal fit is common , and that usually lead to lost of BASS and skewed trebles , where IEM and Over-the -ear Headphoens basically more or less seat themselves properly
a good pair of quality earbuds ( usually the open / semi-open or vented type ) can almost approximate a good pair of headphones and still being very slim and light physically , and comfort of course .. that in itself when combined with more than good enough sonic reproduction is why earbuds IMHO still had a place among the others
