Surprisingly I think the lacquered horn was more resonate and had more sizzle in the sound. But as you moved around the mic the tone changed quite a bit. Hearing them both with you playing straight into the mic would have made a difference, at least to me.

It’s actually not surprising as unlacquered saxes tend to have a more spread, less focused sound. So everyone thinks they sound vintage. All things being equal, I’d always choose a lacquered horn.

As you know John, I bought one of the first Ishimori's that came through your shop (Lacquered) . This horn is amazing, though I prefer the lacquered finish the tone on both is great.

The way you were turning and altering your facing made a lot of difference. I found the un-lacquered sax to be just a small fraction darker. Thank you for playing these saxes well.

You just knew I would chime in! 😂
So glad to see another post from you. When can we get an album of you?
I’m like 5 years in and my Ishimori is still my favorite horn

probably the best modern saxophone for those who like vintage Selmers.

    Lacquered for R&B...Unlacquered for Jazz. Unlacquered WINS !! 🔥 🔥 👏

The laquered one is fuller and fussier. The unlaquered one is sharper with more definition. They are both very good in high and low. Which one handles best?

Also…the unlacquered sounds like it had more volume to it. Was it the “easier” horn of the two to play?

Unlaquered seems darker and fuller in tone to me.
It’s the one I would take.

I think the low end is the same on both. The lacquered horn has just a little edge on the high end of the tone. The unlacquered horn emphasizes it's highest frequencies just slightly below it's lacquered brethren. I think this is a typical difference between lacquered and unlacquered.

The un lacquered sounds a bit darker to me, but they both sound gteat!

Normally I favor tye resonance of an unlaquered, but in this case this lacquered version had much more depth and fatness to the sound. I am really digging these horns.

I like the sound of the lacquered Ishimori. Brighter sound of the lacquered to my ears.
What did you end up purchasing?

Laquered more focused sound. Unlaqured sounds more spread out. You probably should get one of each.

The sound on the unlaquered one is a bit fatter. Maybe a bit raspier? SO GLAD I went with unlaquered!
