In german „Flöte“ means also recorder and flute „Blockflöte“ = recorder „Querflöte“ = flute
i believe this is the case in many languages, so this is why flutes are compared to recorders so much

    • @elsafowl
      @elsafowl ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, fun fact, but in French a recorder is called a "flûte à bec" while the flute is called a "flûte traversière". So, if you say a "flûte traversière" nobody will mix it up with a recorder, but if you just say "flûte" without specifying, there is a strong chance people will think you mean recorder.
Furthermore, children who learn music (well, it was more common for my mother's generation than mine) will start with the recorder - it's "easy", because you just have to blow in a tube and put your fingers on the right holes. So most children have a limited knowledge of the recorder, and you find them as "toys instruments" in kindergarten and schools, so I would say that's also why the recorder remains the first "flûte" that comes to mind.

I've been playing the flute since 4th grade, and I'm 25 now. I was originally going to learn the violin because there was going to be a program for it at my school, but it was canceled since not enough people signed up. I still want to learn someday, but I'm happy we got band instead, and I was able to play amongst many other instruments. I was in band all throughout the rest of school (ending at 12th grade).
I disagree about standing up for a long time though. We always sat while playing in band, aside from the percussion section. And at home, or wherever else you are, it's perfectly fine to play the flute while sitting. Not sure where you got the idea you have to stand.
Anyway, I love the flute, and am anxious to get a better one eventually, as well as a bass flute. I enjoy learning the notes to songs from the radio, movies, shows, games, and anime that soumd good when you play alone. I miss playing in a group with other instruments as well though.

Recently started the Lute as an adult, it was something I had been wanting to play as a kid but due to an underbite I was told it was impossible. So I went on and played other instruments (forced on me by the school instructors) and eventually started hating classical music because of it (I had the bassoon forced on me as a tiny, tiny, child and I didn't like it) and moved on to different instruments and other music genres.
Now as an adult I was at a music school and casually chatted with the flute instructor who was somewhat horrified by my story and said it was nonsense. Now he's teaching me flute ^^

I used to play flute for like six years, give or take. The 11th thing on this list I say is : Medical problems. Like, from the posture while playing flute, my right scapula/shoulder blade (no idea which one is commonly used in English, not my first language, sorry) is pushed out more than the left one. My parents used to say that I basically have really lame wing on my back. I also have scoliosis, so maybe that contributed to it...but without back and posture exercises and holding your flute the other way to the left side for a few minutes so you kinda even the posture...you and your shoulder blades are doomed. So fun.
    Loved the video though!

I played the flute in highschool, as a guy....
I agree with you on alot of things you've said sadly, not the gay part though lol. The flute is physically limited to one note, strain, fluids , lip form and breathing. It's like singing, but harder lol. Reed instruments have it alot easier and you don't have to slant it off to one side...
I'm now practicing electric guitar 🙂, it's definitely a bit harder to overcome the single note mindset.
PS, at least I had a way to start a conversation with a cute girl I saw who played the flute. 😎

Enjoyed your video and talking points, though didn't completely agree with all of them myself or thought a bit overblown (haha) but did others like the shaking lips, lol. Vibrato without even trying right?! Yes I learned piccolo too, and considered it the honor it was. Only the best had that privilege. No solo beats piccolo on the Stars And Stripes Forever! Such fun! I would like to add one disadvantage to flute playing. Doing so over the years can contribute to a bit of moderate hearing loss in the left ear.

I have played flute for 15 yrs. And recorder for 40. Love them both. Yes, I am male and not gay. Ha ha. I was attracted to flute by a performer named Ian Anderson. Yes, from the rock group Jethro Tull. I play mostly impromptu style. Also Jazz and Latin Jazz, contemporary and traditional Christian music. Also flute and reorder in Caribbean music styles of Soca, calypso and Steel Pan music.
I find flute and recorder very versatile. I was originally a Percussion major in college and got sooooo tired of lugging all those drums around! I have an excellent ear an wanted to take up a melodic instrument (other than timpani. First recorder and later flute. You probable know Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull. But check out Nestor Torres for incredible Latin Jazz flute, a wonderful genre of flute music. I am self taught and play in several bands. Love it! So don’t think of or treat flues as just an orchestral instrument. I still play percussions too, but much more flute, and occasional recorder.

If you're not planning to go pro and just learning as a hobby, you can learn any instrument to a certain skill level. The process is certainly difficult. I started learning guitar a few months back and now I am definitely better than when I started. You just gotta practice regularly. Go one step at a time and don't compare with others.

Toney!! I listened to this video again, and that is so true about standing up. I mean I am a working pianist of course but I can see why you would say something like this. With the flute why would you want to sit down with it I mean you can of course but that is like singing sitting down. You can do it but it is harder to project from your stomach to try to get that air going. Well, the same with the flute. Yo are going to bee better off standing so that you are not going to go flat hahahaha. Don’t get me wrong I am sure some flute players do sit while they are practicing and that is great too of course but to get that diaphragm working to stay on key you want to bee standing so that the air will flow. Also…. With the piano that is so true. You are not going to stand with a piano. The only thing now that you will stand with is a synthesizer or keyboard. Those you can port around still it is a big pain to have to port them transporting cables and amps and then the synthesizer or keyboard. But those are the only things keyboards that you are really going to stand with. But a piano or digital piano ummm… that is the pain about playing the piano. Though i am a pianist and I love my instrument I do dog my instrument. Hahahahaha. The thing about the piano is this. People think that it is beautiful but I have to say. Don’t bee deceived. It really is not that beautiful. The piano from the outside may look beautiful but it is a huge piece of work. You can not transport it easily you can’t pick it up it is not that beautiful girl like the flute is. Very loving instrument. The piano comes across intimidating to people when they see it and desire to start with it you can not just tune it up you have to have a piano tuner to take care of that. Your having to break your back to play the thing. Because you are hovering over a huge keyboard. You actually don’t feel calm after playing it especially if you are a working pianist. You actually are drained mentally because of the way you have to sit at it and hold your body. It is so dramatic compared to the other instruments. For people that don’t play the thing yes. It may to them look beautiful and those that are listening may say it is soothing and therapeutic. But for those of us having to play the darn thing it is a piece of work. You get hot and it is often loud. Piano playing is pretty noisy even on a grand with the lid down. You have to keep them tuned up twice a year at least if you want them to sound good you have to make sure that all the parts are working correctly before you are able to have someone come play it. The only thing about a digital piano is that you don’t have to tune it and you can do so much with it emulating other instruments but it is still very heavy to transport. Yes. You can take the frame apart on a digital to transport it but still it is pretty darn heavy and then the time that it takes to put the thing together so the piano actually is a piece of work and it takes up a lot of space. It has work written all over it. The flute on the other hand is like that girl who will stick with you and you can hold her and pick her up. She is so much more romantic and wants to bee held. She is low in carrying for and you can take her where ever you go pretty much hahahahaha. It is so forgiving and you can take her with you on a road trip if you want she is very happy and doesn’t need that much attention. It is not demanding like the piano is. She doesn’t demand she is this beautiful thing that is just a Jule. I have never heard the piano being called a jule. And I am its player and this is what i think of the piano hahahaha. The way a piano is played compared to a flute the players of both instruments are so different. Pianists are more snobbish and rough and intimidating like their instruments. The flute player however are more relaxed and very calm I can surely tell that you for sure have the personality of your instrument their Toney. Hahahaha. And oh the other thing with a flute you can get away with practicing late at night where as the piano if you even try you can disturb the house unless you have a digital then it is fine to practice or play. With this being said the thing I love about playing the instrument is that it is huge and you really do look like a boss playing the piano hovering over the instrument’s keyboard. As i stated in my last comment the boss of the instruments or if they had a supervisor it would be the piano the piano is actually the boss of the instruments. It is actually like the supervisor of the instruments. It is their leading, supporting, and accompanying. And being a support for a jazz band that is what your boss does as well. Now as far as the king of instruments, well, that would have to bee the pipe organ. That thing is the king of instruments. But the boss would bee the piano. So actually with this flute players are very very humble and are submissive just like their instruments where as the piano and us we are pretty snobbish and proud kind of intimidates people because the instrument that we play. I am telling it like it is and I don’t think other pianists would tell you the honest truth like this but i am hahahahaha. If you were to see which instrumnet was more beautiful and actually has beauty written all over it it would for sure not bee the piano. It would bee the flute. You all have beauty written all over you, and your instruments.. stay awesome!!!

My adopted mama wouldn't let me play la flute, cause I am male, & she was protecting me. I continued with viola. I am grown now, & since men can get away with playing a bamboo flute, or Irish low d flute, I am gonna try the Irish low d flute. It sounds a bit more low, than a Chinese bamboo flute.

When we were testing out instruments by blowing into the head piece, I was able to immediately make a sound from the flute, which is apparently rare. I chose the flute because of that. Also, if I'm told to play the piccolo, I'll refuse. What're they gonna do, somehow force me?

This whole thing about guys being gay playing the flute is stupid. I'm straight and played the flute cus I like the sound it makes. I had the balls to play it in highschool way back in the late 90's in a school where homophobia was rampant. Its a fine instrument that plays great music. Plus to a past bullion collector looks like silver bling. Some of the most famous flute players were men. Have fun and don't give a shit what people think.

LoL when I was like 8, I told my parents I wanted to play flute (Idek why or how I came up with the idea) and they bought me...a recorder. So I was stuck learning recorder for a couple years until they bought me a real flute xD
Actually, I didn't like playing flute much at all because it was so hard and I never took care of it and it's... In REALLY bad shape O_o
So when In was 13, they bought me a NEW flute. But it was one of those...Amazon ones and it didn't have a cork and I played it very little
UNTIL late last year, I picked up flute again and I grind on it now and I went from mediocre to intermediate in like...4-5 months. But my sister banged the flute on my desk and it got rekt SO
I got a NEW FLUTE (no.3) and this one is just amaze and cost much more than the Amazon one but I love playing now and I play all the time :>

Meh. Flute has a large range of repertoire compared to the other members of the woodwind fam like clarinet , oboe and bassoon. A lot of violin pieces are also playable on flute , some even sounds better than the violin , which is the instrument it's originally composed for. Check out Denis Bouriakov , playing seemingly impossible violin pieces on flute like Mendelssohn violin concerto , Tchaikovsky violin concerto, Carmen Fantasy - Waxman , and even piano pieces like Chopin's Impromptu.
