Usually beauty is subjective, but I believe that sometimes there is something so exceptional which is not humanly possible to dislike. Why the hell has this video only 2'850 views? Share this, share!
When a pianist plays, we want to see the hands, from any angle you want to show them. This might as well be strictly audio (a spectacular audio, but...). How many videos have I seen of a ballet and been shown close-ups of the dancers instead of the over-all choreography? Too many. The videographer is on the wrong track.
This is the best interpretation I have ever heard. Such a beautiful touch and clarity! Nicolas also did not forget that this was a dance, though a devilish one. Some pianists play it so fast that absolutely murder it.
Yes, indeed, the most close to perfection I have ever heard, this is really superb. No critic posible, with this difficult piece, and the passion it needs, sometimes one may hear a wrong note here or there, not al all with Economou...He keeps growing after death...
We can see Faust making his pact! What an artist this man was...His beautiful performances persist beyond time and death. His rendition of the Mephisto may be the most close to perfection ever played.
La classe absolue ! Bravissimo master Economou ! Quelle culture musicale hallucinante de performance et de qualité que cette culture classique romantique européenne. Incroyable. Un des sommet de la puissance et de l'efficacité de l'écriture musicale romantique. Avec la sonate en Si mineur... Thank you my God.
He is a bit simillar to Alexei Sultanov , both pianist are very passionate , full of exploding energy , very romantic. Alexei and Nicolas was very talented pianists , but had very tragic destiny , both of them died at very young age
Nicolas was the most intellectual and most passionate performer of Liszt. No other rendition can even come close to his. I disagree with those criticizing the cameraman for showing mostly performer's face instead of his hands. I too prefer watching pianist's hands during recitals but seeing facial expressions of such an exceptional musician during his totally astonishing performances may be telling even more than watching his hands because listening to the recording is sufficient to imagine the magnitude of miracle of converting finger movements into exceptional interpretation of outstanding masterpieces of Ferenz Liszt. Anyway, I mostly close my eyes and listen to the best performance of my favorite pieces because hearing is superior to vision like imagination is sometimes superior to knowledge (A.E.) and I give my imagination unobstructed freedom by not letting vision to interfere. I don't close my eyes during live performances, but I have never been at Economou's recitals :). From my musical point of view the music of Liszt is the brightest and all-encompassing next to Bach's so being my favourite I can not listen to it unless being performed by the best performers. IMO Economou is just the absolutely best of any performers when it comes to Liszt. Thanks for sharing and giving me the opportunity to listen to it. It would've been an empty space in my soul if I hadn't found these recordings and I wouldn't have even known about it.
Он прекрасно исполнил Листа, но послушайте Алексея Султанова. Вам должно понравиться. Он гениальный пианист, и Лист, и Шопен, и Бетховен, и Моцарт....у него великолепны.
Thanks to youtube people can show reverence retroactive to a great Greek pianist that passed away long-long ago youtube was born. This great pianist was killed in a car accident 1993 in his native island of Cyprus just 40 years old. It was a great loss for Cyprus, Greece and the rest of the world that loved and adored his piano performances. Dear Nicolas you are in the company of the God of light and music, Apollo, you may rest in peace and we will always love you and never forget you!
In my opinion, seeing the keyboard is more interesting than seeing the pianists face, however the cameraman seems to disagree lol Amazing performance though
A true genius maestro Nicholas Economou. Totally in the mind of the composer. In fact Franz Liszt was obviously worried whether some day an interpreter would be able to transcend his work. I believe Nicholas incarnates exactly that with his astounding performance. Peaks of power and depth of sensitivity thus revealing to the listener the infinite nature of emotions! I am deeply grateful. Thank you Nicholas mou you are always with me.
I think ever city/town should have a listening library where there are best reproductions of these recordings of Live plays. And of course the best equipment to replay.
very agressive powerful interpetation :D. i like it ! ^^ espessially section at messure 792 "tutta forza". a lot of people actualy pres the pedal at the second note of the messure wich is a C#. it feels like this C# is the first note of the messure. this pianist keeps the pedal at the D. when i was little it always felt like D was kinda upbeat to C# but in this version i hear whats written on the score.
Here's a documentary on the life of this phenomenal pianist (and composer) for those interested: th-cam.com/video/OF0t9Q0FgBg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TNGJY0mD_sOYLjrw
I like the Horowitz version better. More diabolic and you can hear like a ping pong ball is falling down stairs. I guess it's Horowitz' best recording ever! :D
im qurious. why do you like berezovsky more :) ? i like berezovskys version also. the only thing i do not like about his version is that sometimes it feels too staccato , staccatissimo. best version ive heard wich come close to my thoughts are the version of Sergio Tiempo. also on youtube.

Best Mephisto on youtube, hands down. Worst camera work of all time, hands down.
Who cares; this is the best Mephisto with great sound. That matters.
Worst camera? You haven't seen berezovsky playing Liszt transcendental etudes
@@lczq6737 or Zimerman playing Chopin op 10 8 / 5

Wow ! Best mephisto ever !
Without a shadow of a doubt, this has to be one of the best versions of I have ever heard. To rank along Cziffra. Absolutely amazing pianist.

I agree this guy plays it incredibly well, but I gotta say, I’ve never heard someone play it faster before😅
While this is still extraordinary, for me nothing will ever beat Laplante's perfect roundness and feel to this piece
The clarity Nicolas achieves at those supersonic speeds are beyond explanation.
I love specialy how Economou is interpretating this fabulous piece. It's superb.
I am so glad that so many people consider this the best Mephisto ever. It truly is in every sense!
DIABOLICAL! Exquisite! I have been looking for this for A VERY LONG TIME. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!

The same idea crossed my mind once i discovered Sultanov and was reminded of Economou. Their loss is such a great loss for the music world...

So happy I was able to stumble across this and hear it. Unbelievable performance.
insane performance!
Insanely great!
the best ever
Потрясающее исполнение, лучший Мефисто-вальс ! Трагедия, что пианиста давно нет, а его музыка по-прежнему восхищает.
It's so great! Alas- If he was just still alive...:-(
He played great!
The BEST. Your soul will always be with us, Nicola.
Vertigineux !!!

best mephisto waltz
Wow...after this take on Mephisto the piano smoked a cigarette, and 9 months later had its baby twins. :)
Сверхъестественно одарённый молодой человек. Ест, за что покритиковать, но не хочется. А что же с ним стало?
How is he even sat on that stool?

Both versions are good.
There are also other versions..
There is no one best version.

Not bad. But i prefer berezovskys interpretation.
