Wow! 4,000 - 7,000 sq ft! That IS huge! And you're building it mostly all by yourself! You are a blessed man, Stephen! Before too much longer, your dream will be a reality. Keep on keeping on!
I just love the way the house is with gaps all different I believe once the chinking is done I believe the house will look wonderful I’d love to build a house like this in Australia in the country don’t worry about what other people are thinking just keep doing what you’re doing mate God bless you and your wife April people will always complain about what other people are doing just keep building the way you are building this is very Therapeutic for me I was in a truck accident two years and one month ago and I have been watching you build this wonderful home
Your Home and your idea's will look superb and I would think that 90% of your followers would give their right arm to be in your situation with the cabin its huge in comparison to most of the one's we see on youtube off the grid builders, I personally can't wait to see the chinking being done with regard to boring me anything you do around the homestead will do, nice to see the other half giving you a hand. Cheers from the UK.
Thank you so much. She helps every chance she gets. She is still holding down a full time management job for now so she stays extremely busy between work and work at home.
I know of butt and pass homes that were built in the 1970’s that are as solid today as the day they were built. To each their own. Some people only find happiness in bringing other people down.
On camera it is a huge house. I think it is a fantastic project, and especially that the logs are from the land. That is what we have to more of to treat our plant with respect. Tremendous achievement 👍👏🙂
Progress is still progress . I see the stool/bench has made it so much easier to gather the eggs. Nice haul by the way. Many friends make former pig runs into gardens. Just a thought for next spring. Take Care
Thanks for answering on the question about the gaps, that was I would wanted to know too, now I will wait till you will begin to work on the gaps. Sure, I want to see how all will look like after the works have been done.
Did you bolt or spike them together, down through the logs that butted up against each other? Or just lay them in there? Frost movement may be an issue. I myself am building a 20'x20' vertical or stockade type..off grid...way off grid...
The logs are spiked together with #4 rebar every 2 feet. Each concrete pier goes below the frost line and has #5 rebar sticking out of the top. The bottom log was lowered over the rebar . The rebar was then cut off about 5 inches long and bent over with a sledge hammer, pinning the bottom log to the concrete piers the weigh over 3000 pounds each.
Great video you two, glad to see April more and more! Tired of your ugly mug all the time, 😂😂LOL! Keep up the great work, keep pushing forward! You guys should get it knocked out much quicker as a team! John 😎👍
I think your house is going to look amazing! Not being "perfect" but building it yourself, with logs from your property, will make it perfect. Looks like the bench is working well for egg gathering!
Love the old style rustic log homes, not the scribed! Your doing an awesome job. Something to be so proud of! Take those extra logs and build a garage aside your house with a rock faced bottom and the logs you have left on top!
I beg to differ ... on my iPad, that house looks more like a lodge .... looks huge from this vantage point. I love watching your progress, even if it may seem like the same thing. You always seem to talk about something different, and I love to learn new things. Thank you for sharing.
All I know is I'm glad you back making video's. The place is shaping up and looking forward to more progress. How many eggs on average are you getting a day? What do you you do with them.?
Wow! Your camera is amazing!! Superb video quality! That's the first thing I noticed in the first 5 seconds. I'm thinking the butt and pass method. I'm assuming it would take a lot less logs, versus full scribed log.
It takes about the same amount of logs but much more skill/talent to do full scribe and a lot longer process. Butt and pass isn’t as elegant but goes up much faster.
To me, the "gaps" are what make it a log home & give it that hand-hewn character we all love. Super glad you chose to go this route instead! Wow, I knew your home was big, but I didn't realize it was 4,000sf. Maybe you can use some of the extra logs to make an attached garage? My current home doesn't have one & I really wish it did.
@@hickoryridgehomestead9177 That's good about the garage build in the future! Yes, breaks are great & needed! Have a great rest of the week. Tell your wife "hello" for me.
For stain try mixing 1 to1 oil and diesel fuel together I seen a TH-cam video of someone that did it. Came out nice and didn't cost him that much more fuel less oil the lighter it is. No harm in trying a little on a scrap piece of log to see what you think good luck have a nice time at the meet up
Hello from Michigan.... Subbed I have to know what was behind the fence lol....I like the thick chinked cabins more... Especially with all the kit cabins out there... You're awesome
Thank you so much. The fence is just the garden area lol. The will be the same fence coming down the driveway that will be for the area for the goats but I’m not starting that project until I get the house finished. We are considering buying a sawmill and milling the timbers from trees on this property to build the barn .
@@hickoryridgehomestead9177 I just bought a woodland mills hm122... I highly recommend them, quality is amazing... I have videos up if you're interested...
Mate like I said in your last video, you will build your home how you see fit. Thank -you on the explanation of why you are building your home the way you are but seriously you shouldn't have to explain anything, Thank you for the video.....Take Care and Stay Safe.
Good morning to you and yours Stephen. You are making great progress. A little here and a little there. Boring or not your content is always appreciated. The pigs did their job on that area will make for a great greenhouse. That is a huge house but will fit your new family just fine. Will you be adding on to the Cabin in the future? Have a blessed day and thanks...
I haven’t decided if I will finish the rest. It will put us over 7200 square feet and honestly I’m tired of building. We still have a large barn project planned and a new well house as well . We may come back and add on or just build a garage and call it done. Lol
Can I ask a ? Why aren't u staining then chincking. Im dumb I guess it seems you would want it in the dry. PS I like the way you did it. Some of the hewed log house have wide and narrow gaps and I like that. It's pretty and the fact the logs came off yawls place I like.
Your log version is just a different option. I actually think your look will be equally as nice with the mortar. Wonder if you can tint the mortar. You could blend colour or use a contrast colour. I think you’re in for a really good looking home.
Would you ever consider making a video covering the building of your house? I missed the actual putting up of the walls and would love to see from the ground up!
I have a friend who is a log home builder and I’ll add a link to his channel. He builds his the same way and is starting from the ground up. I’ll also have a smaller project soon showing as well.
I don’t think I’m going to make it to the meet up. I just have too much going on at the moment. . There are a few guys on here that have built a full scribe but I haven’t been to their channel in a very long time.

My favorite part - April
The bench looks like it’s working out great!
I’m jealous of your cooler weather. It’s still in the 90s daily here 🥵
It won’t be long and all the leaves will be gone and we will have snow.
1st time love seen that style of log build. I like it. I imagine a lot of trapper cabins do it like that, your forest sounds real dry.
Now, if you prefer a lighter tone log, you can bleach. A water and liquid bleach blend, just put in a garden pump sprayer.
I like the way you done the logs Its going to look great and like they made it in earlier times not Manufactured I enjoy your shows
Thank you so much.

How do you add a log addition to butt and pass? Also do you need to leave room for settling so your windows don’t break.
No room for settling needed. You could cut into a wall to add an addition. It’s not ideal but could be done.
