I'm an Ethiopian. So happy you covered this. One thing I'd like to add is that when you look at a rainbow from afar it looks like it has 3 colors, red, yellow and red. This is very significant as most of the Ethiopian rulers were Orthodox Christian and the rainbow is an important symbol of God's favor.
Not really - Amharic is the 2nd largest language of Ethiopia with 29% speaking it as their mother tongue. Oromo is the most spoken mother tongue, by 33% of the population. Next is Somali and Tigrinya spoken by 6% each. They (plus Afar) are all official languages of equal status. I think where you got confused is that Amharic is/used to be the lingua franca and used to be the language of education and therefore it has the most speakers since people learned it as 2nd language. However this is no longer really the case, since most regions now use their own language in primary education and use English for secondary and tertiary education.
I think the 'Ethiopic' is an other name for the Older language ''Ge'ez'', so in my opinion this is not a problem. Plus, all the Amharic Alphabets(Feedels) come from the Ethiopic(Ge'ez) script ! ** I found this video very informative. Thanks for the deep explanation.

There's definitely more to it than the desire of 'honoring' Ethiopia. I think that was the first trigger for the early choices but then it became much of a regional trend for that area of Africa. With countries wanting to have similar flags to each other due to being neighbours but also sharing historical heritage together - namely that of French colonization.
