I have learned two tricks in the fight against poa annua: -Pregerminate your seed in dump soil to fill holes faster. -Let the lawn grow a bit higher every two weeks because the seedheads will then be in cuttinghight.
Greatest video by far regarding annual meadow, weeds and how to sustainably treat your lawn. Besides, a pretty pleasant presentation that's a joy to listen to. Thanks!
I've got a few trays just like yours at hand in which I keep seeding grass with roughly two weeks intervals. When I remove the Poa Annua I immediately fill up the hole with some grass which I transplant from the tray. This way the soil in this spot is not exposed to sunlight and new or dormants weed seeds won't germinate. Lot's of Poa Annua everywhere in lawns in The Nerherlands this year. Couple of reasons for it I believe being: A) Cold and wet weather in this spring B) No mow policy by cities during the month of May (good for the bees👍) but spreads seeds everywhere. C) The popularity of robo mowers which only mulch and thus spread the seeds all over the lawn. I literally see peoples lawns get ruined within two years after switching to robo mowers. I'm curious how others feel about this. Well, off onto my lawn now for my daily 10 min. Poa Annua battle. Have a great day everyone.
I hear you OTW, we had that no mow bullshit in the uk, turning all the public grasslands into weed and pollen factories that when they finally did chop they just mulched smothering the grass, it also blew into the roads and shit where it gets wet, gets slippery and dangerous. They should have baled it for the farmers, the council had a better crop at the roadside than in some of their fields! 😅
What I know about lawns can be written on a stamp but I'm pretty sure in the trail trays and also on the seed that was put down after removing the poa ,the sees rate was far far more than recommended
A great video Austin, I did the same as you fella. It’s hard to get grass to germinate in summer, I think you have done well. I watched this a few days ago and forgot to 👍🏻 I decided to do as you have done and grow grass in seed trays, I’m hoping they will be great for repairing patches. Love watching your videos, very excited about ordering a 20b. Keep the videos coming, they are great 👍🏻
A great instructional video. I have really enjoyed watching Austin sorting the lawn out. I’m really looking forward to getting my posh new Kensington 20b. Great channel, keep them coming 👍🏼
Why not using a pro plugger? Plug with poa out out of the lawn, have some boxes with gras on stock and take a plug of that and put in back in the lawn.
I had a bad case of poa. I used a propane flame to burn all the poa seed and grass. It left burn spots all over my lawn, but by end of summer, they were all gone. This fall I used prodiamine at max rate. I am waiting until spring 2023 to see two things. One: Will Trump be indicted for anything. Two: Will I have poa Ana.
@@thedj5914 1. Trump finally indicted. 2. I estimate 90% reduction of poa in early season 2023! Manually removed all poa that popped up this spring. Well on way to poa-free yard….just not yet.
After killing off small rear lawn twice trying to solve the poa annuaa problem I was once again inundated. I have spent most of spring and summer hand picking out. I have even been applying herbicide with very small paintbrush carefully to individual poa annua leaves. I found this quite effective although leaving many brown spots. Still have 10 to 15 minutes hand picking out plants after every now. At last I think my efforts are paying off and hopefully I'll see the real benefits next spring. I have doubted myself a few times as to whether I'm doing the right thing. Your video has convinced me I am so thank you for that; I'm not going mad.
i hate to piss on your parade but most golf greens are around 40% poa..you will not get rid of poa..the best you can do is chase your tail .and yes it drives you mad if you think you can get rid of it..the day they make plastic noddy grass look real is the day i sell the lawnmowers
Yes it helps just neaten it up and cuts any that the verticut cartridge has lifted and left... the vericut cartridge cuts most of the strands itself though
It's astounding how quickly the poa finds its way back. I wonder how much of it is dormant seeds waiting to germinate just under the soil surface waiting for an opportunity. The brush cartridge would also stand the stalks and seed heads up but of course not cut them of like the verticutter. I don't know how effective it would be to use this cartridge on my liberty 35 as it doesn't have micro adjustment.
Hi Austin, great series of posts. I am quite new to lawn care, and have over the last 4 year learned a tremendous about grass varieties, lawn care regimes, mowers etc. I have just concluded that my premium Rye Grass mix from Rolawn is turning me into a slave for my lawn, having to overseed every year etc. I want my lawn and nature to work for me instead. So have decided to perhaps I need to start over with a Bent/Fescue mix instead, to get that stoloniferous lateral growth working for me, and hopefully no more overseeding every year. Your exeperiment with the different seed mixes has been very useful indeed. I have only one question for you: How well is your Fine 1 or more specifically Fine 2 area of the lawn doing with regards to preventing Poa after 2 years? If I go ahead with my plan, I'll be saving up to get a Allett mower with a verticutter to assist in my grooming regime, and to hopefully get those solons cut and dense growth to follow, with no room for poa!! 😃
Hi! Good to hear from you. Fescue & bent is a beautiful lawn at any height you choose. Better colour in the winter (no ryegrass winter die-back). But you need to have the thatch reduction equipment ready and germination is slow. That’s the worst time for Poa ingress.
Are they boxing you in back there with more homes? Poa is a giant pain to get rid of. I have nutsedge Im dealing with now. Any opening in the grass canopy at all and it comes to say hello. Which combination of grass types are your favorite you've planted?
The scarifier will stand lateral growth up to a degree however the Verticut cartridge is cutting them and helping promote new growth by cutting rhizomes end stolons so they’re doing different tasks really
Nope it's one he's had in back of his shed for years- the engineer in him likes to play! We have no Liberty's available for videos at the moment as our's is out with a professional gardener - next unsold Liberty off the line isn't until August
Great series of videos thanks you so much. 👍 One question, would you of got rid of the poa, Yorkshire fog ect if you had killed off the whole area and started right from scratch? I've just done this with my grass as I tried the scarification and over seed last year and I got the same result as you, 😔 still lots of weed grass, my grass is not as far on as yours, but so far I'm weed free.
Hi Lee... we killed everything off so the POA is new seeds that have come in- we could reseed all over again and it would appear within weeks! A BIG problem this summer... and every summer for that matter... verticutting AND cutting regularly will keep it at bay.... its worse in the seeds that established slower

Scarify at least once a month with the spring rake cartridge
If you don’t have a verticutter how effective is raking and mowing on a smallish lawn 60m2?
Perfect. You should be using your scarifier cartridge at least once a month in the mowing season - some do it weekly.
