I did a renovation this march-April it look good. But now its absolutely covered in poa my lawns horrible now. So going to do it a again in September. Your lawn is spot on.👍
I'm killing my back lawn off lol. The best thing to fight it seems to be fescues as they are so dense. My front lawn has far more fescues with not so much rye and doesnt have issues. I think thats a lot to do with how thined out rye goes during the winter time.
I renovated my lawn in May , but have a lot of POA , which has started to die with the heat . I verticut the lawn today and managed to get a whole green bin full of dead and weed grass out
I had huge problem on my 200m² lawn but didnt want to start again from scratch. Whole sections seemed to be just weed grass. So on Friday I verticut, cut, verticut, cut, scarified, cut, scarified cut. Last cut was 15mm with a cylinder. The weed grass hates it so short and goes brown after a few a days which makes it very easy to see and rip out.The new grass I have been putting down is happy down to about 1cm - so should eventually win.
Your lawns are looking really good mate! Weirdly enough, i did this exact same process myself this week. My lawn all of a sudden started going yellow, I put the same fertiliser on as you have yesterday, but stupidly i got impatient and give it a cut this morning so I’m hoping i didn’t hoover up most of the fertiliser🤣🙈 ( it was watered in well last night and we had a good amount of rain for a change this morning ). I think I’m the next few weeks I’m gonna give it a light scarife to expose a little more of the soil. Keep up the great work, oh and I’m really liking the hayter too as it gives a superior cut. Fingers crossed I’ll have a beautiful lawn next year and I’ll treat myself to a nice cylinder mower? That way i can buy various cartridges for verticutting, scarifying etc
Nice one! 👍🏻 It's trying to find the right balance at the moment which is quite difficult with the weather we're having. We're expecting quite a bit of rain here within the next hour so I'm trying to get a few over seeding jobs sorted before it does! Same here with regard to the cylinder mower. So much more convenient having the cartridges for the one machine. Only problem is they set you back a fair whack!
Nice one - I appreciate it 👍🏻 It's a nightmare to deal with. It can take over a lawn before you know it. I sorted the bottom tier lawn in my garden yesterday. Spent about half an hour just pulling out poa!
Did exactly the same thing yesterday. Even down to changing from number 4 to 3 on the Hayter. The only difference is that I used the verticuter attachment instead to hopefully do the same thing. My theory is that it will cut and weaken the flat grasses and make way for the grass we want.
Cheers! 👍🏻 It's an absolute nightmare this time of year. Drives me mad! Nice one for the advice too - I'll bare this in mind. I don't think it will be the only time I make this mistake!
Hi keep it up you are doing a great job and having fun making some brilliant videos superstar Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall my grass lots of patches
I only used the spring tine attachment. A weed after this I tackled the same problem on the bottom tier lawn. There video of it will be out this morning. I used both attachments on there. It seemed to do a better job, I thought so anyway!
Id like to have a nice garden but with two kids that are always out the back i need something done quickly. In your experience do alot of the same methods apply even when you use turf rolls versus reseeding
Same stuff applies, but with children playing on the lawn, it's a tough one to fix without giving it time to recover. Did you go with a hard wearing seed mix?
I can see u finally took my advise to take out the red robin photinia plant and pot it instead , its gone huge in these past months and would of been even worse in 3 year time , now its potted u can control it better 😅
It's so much better! We have a plan for that area. I found out recently when I tried digging below that the stones from the french drain below it stretch wider than we originally thought (this was put in by the developers!). We're going to raise the area by creating a raised sleeper bed. Hopefully then the plants will be able to get a decent footing in a proper layer of soil!
I kept it on the highest setting. I did a similar thing on one of my other lawns yesterday too and dropped it to the second to highest. It worked better, but I didn't dare go any lower!
@NoviceGardener thanks for the reply...im actually a bit scared to go over with the scarifier incase I ruin it cos its looking not too bad at the minute
As long as you keep it quite high, it won't look too bad. Alternatively, you could gently go over with a spring tine rake. It will just draw them to the surface.
If you’re lawn is covered in POA do you think it’s wise to try and pull them out with a weed puller and try and reseed the area? My lawn was great last year but over the winter it’s now 50% weed grass 🙄
It will come back, but taking off the seed heads will just reduce how much will come back next year. But like you said, I'm hoping the grass I want just crowds out the weed grass! I'm considering lowering my height of cut so that it is easier to identify and keep on top of!
Mow the lawn low and it will show all the poa Easier then hand pull it out with a dinner fork do 15min every evening eventually you will get on top of it till next year
I've started to grow grass in small little 15cm pots with lids. Then when a find a bigger enough weed grass, I just cut around the pot and dig it out. I then just pop in the new grass I have grown. Then fill pot with soil and grow some more. This is what I have become. Save yourself and get out while you can. 😃
My lawn is covered in the stuff! I've got a dog that uses the lawn (for obvious reasons), so I cant kill it off. The only option I have is every few weeks i'm using the scarifier (metal blades, not the tines (as they are closer to a verticutter)) in 2 x passes up & across to lift up the stems & then cut them back. This time I intend to cut lower & run over with the scarifier 3 x times. Then as you say spend some time each night with a fork digging them out. I feel like i'm fighting a losing battle each year though. I also have a shady part which seem's to prefer the creeping fescue cultivar & the other end the rye cultivar. So when it grows you can clearly see the different blades & shades. I'd love to kill it and re-start, but it's just not going to happen for a while.

Poa just ruins the aesthetic! Sometimes it's worth just starting again if it gets too bad. Good luck with your renovation when you do it!
@NoviceGardener I know it does. Thanks mate.👍

Might be worth a heavy scarify and over seed, but killing it off will definitely out your problem too!
2 videos in 2 days, this is amazing mate
Nice one!
I've got a lot of footage at the moment with videos I need to sort - it's just finding the time to edit!
@NoviceGardener OK mate, can't wait for more gardening tips, love to see it mate keep it up
I renovated my lawn in May , but have a lot of POA , which has started to die with the heat . I verticut the lawn today and managed to get a whole green bin full of dead and weed grass out
Verticutting is definitely the way!
I also just ordered the hayter hawk 36 today as well, can't wait to use it this week
That's sound - you'll be happy with it!
@NoviceGardener cheers mate 👍🏿 👌

Quite a big space to work with, but it's not too easy to manage once you're on top of it. Hope it continues to look good!
With a lawn that size i found a manual wire rake better than a machine as you can rake in multiple directions with ease then mow

Great video mate. First one I’ve seen of yours. Liked and subscribed. Gonna watch some of your others. Struggling myself with Poa. 😟

Looking good pal. I suffer with thr dreaded poa!!! If you spill fertiliser in one spot just water it in heavily.
Cheers! 👍🏻

Grass is looking great, what setting on the ferrex did you use in the end
Nice one!
I used it on the highest two settings. I didn't take it any lower or else it would have started to dig into the soil layer.

Great job mate that came up a treat after fertilising. Did you use the spring tine for both passes or the actual scarifier blades for 2nd pass?

Great video...what setting did you have the scarifier on? I have the same one and same problem with lateral growing weed grasses

Hi, do you think the A1 lawn feed & fertiliser is a lot better than the Westland/ evergreen products?
I always find that I see better results faster with the A1 Lawn stuff.
I'm thinking of buying one of those scotts spreader how good are they.👍
They're great! I use mine all the time when I'm putting down grass seed or granular fertiliser.
@NoviceGardener yep most definitely going to get one now in the past I've just kind of threw it down 😄 and it doesn't look good.👍
Nice! Wen Allet mower with verticutter attachment 😅
I'd love an Allett mower with the different cartdiges. I need to get saving!
@NoviceGardener Same here! The more I look into lawn care the more I can see why these different cartridges help. 😊
What height did you have the ferex at please? I have the same machine and same problem so going to do the same as you
I only used it on the top two settings. Anything lower would start to cut into the soil layer.
How often should we put in any fertilizer liquid ones specifically?
You can apply them every month as long as you’re regularly cutting and keeping it watered (but don’t water more than twice a week).
@@NoviceGardener only water twice a week? Isnt that abit less in this dry weather?
What’s the mower that stripes so well a small lawn?
It's the Hayter Hawk 36
If you’re lawn is covered in POA do you think it’s wise to try and pull them out with a weed puller and try and reseed the area? My lawn was great last year but over the winter it’s now 50% weed grass 🙄
It's definitely worth removing the plant. It has shallow roots so a lot of the time you can pull them out by hand. Saves taking too much soil out.
Doesn't the poa grow back if you don't dig out the roots? Or is the idea to increase healthy grass to out-compete it?
It will come back, but taking off the seed heads will just reduce how much will come back next year. But like you said, I'm hoping the grass I want just crowds out the weed grass! I'm considering lowering my height of cut so that it is easier to identify and keep on top of!

I'm going to start doing this as of this week. I'll bring the height of cut down and see how I get on removing them.

What height in mm are you cutting at?
I'm cutting at 30mm
@@NoviceGardener Thank you, were you cutting at 40 before? I have just upped mine from 32 to 40 as the grass was struggling in the heat.
Mate do you have an IG or something where I can send you some pictures of my lawn for advice? thanks.
I don't, but you can email them over to novicereviewsathome@gmail.com if you'd like me to have a look 👍🏻
I call it PIA grass. 😩
If my lawn could be fully rid of it, I'd be a happy man!
Looks like rye grass seeding to me, definitely not weed grasses
