    It’s crazy you don’t see how steep the angle is until you draw it. You think "oh that’s not gonna be enough space" but then it all comes together.

      You took the words right outta my mouth!! As a beginner I totally agree with this! I’m really struggling to draw buildings or really anything from life…Never thought that drawing what I can see would be so challenging. Judging angles is tricky for me. Every time I think it’s a certain angle when I draw it it turns out different than reality and needs multiple redrawing…Hoping observation skills will improve overtime

    I’m trying to learn perspective right now, and I gotta say this is really helpful. I always put vanishing points and horizon line on my drawings, and I find that a lot of the time they end up looking warped because they stretch so much to try and meet them in the small confines of the page

  • @ectownsend1433
    @ectownsend1433 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

    I have really been having a block when it comes to perspective, but when you finally said we shouldn’t expect the vanishing points or even the horizon line to be visible in the drawing it finally made sense. I realized I need to develop my ability to visualize them even when they are way off the page

    You’re so right, a detail or two off, no one notices but if the perspective is off ya’ can’t not notice that. It’s like a neon sign. And it screams “amateur” or “beginner”.

    So it's much more like training our eyes to catch the silhouette and once you do it after some time you will get it instinctively. So the perspective principles are much more needed for when you need to construct from nothing or be extremely precise.

    • @samiier3324
      @samiier3324 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the overall stuff u taught is how to observe a building

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not necessarily the silhouette, but the angle of the perspective lines, particularly the two extremes - depending on the roof shape these may not be the silhouette. Yes, the principles are much more necessary when drawing from imagination. 😀

    I am finding it much more useful to see this applied in context of a large building.

    I used to draw comics as a kid and loved it, but I eventually stopped out of frustration because I couldn't understand how to apply perspective. As a grown-up, I've found ways to draw using Google Maps in a very similar way to what you are showing in this video. Your method is really didatic, practical and encouraging, and I hope I can continue to improve my drawing skills!

    i guess the most basic, fundamental building blocks of these drawings really are a lot more important than they seem. it's so interesting, because when you look at Mr. Travers' drawings, the first thing that meets your eye is how well and how pleasantly th drawing matches the real thing. and i think for some reason the part of our brains responsible for higher order thinking erroneously misattributes this to things like details and ornamentation. however, what we're really doing is subconsciously being impressed by the resemblance between the similarities in perspective between the drawing and the real thing.
    what a brilliant method to boil perspective down into not much more than the pure angles of edges as they appear to us. thank you Mr Travers for yet another gem in drawing instruction ! :)

    Hell yeah. Ingenious way to learn perspective that builds muscle memory and confidence with sketching. A quick and easy 'think, see, and apply' way to teach it that's approachable! Don't worry about the detail, just try and fail. Love it.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sometimes we can make things harder than they are. Good teaching I've always thought is making something so obvious you wonder why you are learning it at all!

  • @cory99998
    @cory99998 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Honestly if you just push through and get mileage I don't think it's hard to get the basics down at an intuitive level. The issue is that people try to do it perfectly and line everything up rather than learning to feel it out and make a lot of mistakes. Most of my hinderance in art is usually just trouble doing things I'm not good at.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think an unrecognised problem is we watch a video and assume it’s told me what I need to know to apply it. In fact most real life scenes do not fit directly for artists into the perspective theoretical construct. We need more info we don’t realise the videos haven’t given us think but we are the problem. I have a few videos on this. All the best with your drawing Cory. 😀

      For me it's an only possible choice, because I can't get it right by feeling. I have no vision, I can't capture it, so all perspective for me is just plain struggle. Hope for a sudden breakthrough after hours of drawing, watching videos and studying the object.

The general perspective I got right more or less, but I was so busy with the overall shape that I totally missed that the towers at the corners are very differently shaped. What was the architect thinking, lol! Still angry with myself that I got it wrong after trying so hard. At least I can now recognize any drawing or photo of that dome in my sleep.

      Haha. Yes. The towers on the river are on the rear of the facade and smaller. It’s a shame was Hohenzollern Chapel on the other side was destroyed by the then government in the 1970s for political reasons. I hope they replace the dome one day with the original design which was destroyed in the war. Suits the overall design much better. 😀

    Hi, Stephen, this is a great ! I love your method to draw such building with the help of a photo. Also using a pen to measure the angle of the building to fit the perspective is a very convenient way to draw . I just have a question , suppose you are facing the real building , you draw it on spot, can we still use this method? Or we have to change the method ? Thanks !

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I still use a pen on location to measure angles. I hold it up in front of the object and align it with the angle of the object and then bring it straight down onto the paper. Sounds dodgy but is surprisingly accurate. Give it a try. 😀

      They have a great flow of ink. I use them for diagrams and such because they show up really clearly on the video. I tend not to use them in drawing scenes as the ink flows so well it tends not to be quite dry when I move my hand over it. (I draw quite quickly). And I love the way they feel when you use them. 😀

    Another tip for people who want to understand perspective and 3D better: try tricking your brain into drawing a rectangle at an angle in 3d space. Tell your brain that the canvas or paper are a kind of wall that is at an angle in 3D space, and try sketching a few shapes from different angles. At some point, you'll realize that you can "tilt your head" mentally. You're still drawing a square or rectangle, but from a different mental perspective. The paper isn't real!

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The horizon, which I prefer to call eye level, is actually really important, because all the angles meet on it. Therefore it’s a great way of checking if the angles are correct. I have a number of of videos that focus on eye level if you’re interested. 😀

    im trying to do an interior for a homework of my perspective drawing class. and man, am i lost. its really weird. i know how everything works, but as soon as i start drawing i dont know where what goes and how big all the elements are in relation to each other and all of a sudden im terribly overwhelmed and want to give up. perspective is the one thing i want to master most but it gives me brainfreeze and my head keeps saying "youre missing the plugin to do that, something in your brain is wrong". whatd you recommend for a hardgainer like me?

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have videos on interior 1 and 2 point perspective. Have you watched those? I also have a few videos on the concept of perspective, and the one on 5 things perspective videos don’t tell you might also be helpful. Your brain is fine. You just haven’t had it explained in a way it makes sense.

  • @pellier08
    @pellier08 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Following from another of your videos, where would the straight eye line be in the first drawing at 8:00? I thought there had to be an eye horizontal line... 😕

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And there is one, at least conceptually. Eye level is the horizontal line directly in front of the viewers eyes or camera. Remember that those basic perspective diagrams assume (and seldom tell you) that they presuppose the ground is level under the object and all the way to the viewer. In this case neither is true. The ground slopes up and I am on a lower level than the buildings and people you can see. There does not happen to be a horizontal line to see here on the buildings as it is mostly lower than the footpath line. And don’t forget that the ground line is not a perspective angle. It’s the slope of the ground. My videos on what perspective videos don’t tell you cover this. I also have ones on perspective up and down hills you might find useful. It’s not hard once we see it. 😀
