Video Note: In this video I mention that there doesn't seem to be any specific order for updating the firmware between the inverter and the display. It turns out there's been a lot of Error 32 errors happening and the fix is to re-install the display firmware first and then install the inverter firmware.
So the recommendation now is to always update your display firmware first, and then update the inverter firmware.

Another good video. I had to laugh at the end about powering it off and back on again. Like the British sitcom IT Group where they answer the phone “have you tried turning it off and back on again?” Good video. Hope to hear a good report running this new firmware.

FYI, I first tried using the single cable ( USB to cat5 ) that was supplied by signature solar to upgrade the firmware. I keep getting a failed error (the com port was open however there was an issue with communication to the unit ). So for kicks and giggles, I used the cables ( serial to cat5 and serial to USB by signature solar ) just as Adam in the video. Well, it all upgraded seamlessly. Both firmwares are loaded and so far no flickering LED's!!
Thanks for your time in making these videos Adam, you are a great help!!

Hey Adam, excellent video. Without this it wouldn't have been possible for me to update the firmware. As many here know SS doesn't answer the phones; they put you on indefinite hold and then they promise to call back, but they don't. They sent me 2 of those RJ45 to USB cables and both were giving me errors every time I tried the updates. I saw the Serial to USB adapter that you showed in your video; ordered it from Amazon, got it in 4 hours, plugged it in and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much. Keep them videos coming. As a software engineer I'm very technical but wanted to see the whole process beforehand since i run my house offgrid and didn't want to risk bricking anything. Your video was exactly what I needed to do this confidently and I was able to get it done pretty quickly.
To your comment that you should've disabled AC IN and Solar before stating, I actually had 1 of my inverters shut down mid update because it was only on battery. To be able to get it through to the end, I had to enable AC IN. Thankfully, the screen didn't brick and I was able to just reflash, but it wasn't working when I restarted the unit. I'm not sure why it did this but my inverters are slightly difference because I had to get 1 replaced under warranty. They also had slightly different firmwares before updating them because I had never updated either, so maybe the turning off was a firmware issue. Either way, leaving AC IN on at least might be easier and less risky for some folks.

For anyone looking for an updated PDF guide on Firmware Installation, BenFromSignatureSolar posted one on the diysolarforum that goes over both .exe files you have to run to update the inverter and MCU.
It’s located in the thread titled “RESOLVED: EG4 6500EX and 6000EX Lights Flickering FIRMWARE”. If you search Bens posts for “Here is the update procedure. Follow this exactly and you should not have an issue”.
EG4 still does not have this updated procedure on their website.
You should be fine if you do it as it was shown in the video as the steps in the pdf are the same as what was done in the video.
    Thanks for the walkthrough!

Upgraded my 3/2022 version. I never had it in production as still finishing my cabin. Been running on a Growatt 3000 so never really tested the light flickering issue. Sounds like the first production run may not have had the issue. Upgrade went fine and I connected a wifi shop light that has dimming and that’s seems fine. Dimmed down to 10% and no flickering. I did put my volt meter on and seems to be holding around 59.99Hz to 60Hz. My meter has a o-scope and I can see just the slightest bit of noise on the waveform, but it’s a somewhat cheap meter, so possible it is picking up other things. I need to get some solar into the PV to really be sure. Thanks for the video, was helpful. Fortunately I had a rs232 serial to USB adapter from another project as my inverter did not include that adapter since it was a first run production version.

In the case of the 6500s there's 2 updates that need to be run so both CPU versions are updated. I looked at the download file for the 6000s and like you said, there's only one file to be run, so that's probably why only one CPU version was updated. Not sure if this was an oversight or intentional. It may be due to the hardware differences, that only one CPU update was necessary.

were you not having the issue with flickering lights before you returned these units, or am I confusing you with another chan? apologies if I am, I have seen so many "troubling" issues with these inverters and with Sig Solar that I have taken them both off my list, my Growatt 3000 24v is still doing well, but I am saving up now to buy some Victron gear to compare with, your are more patient than I am, I would have sent these back and contacted my card holder, I appeciate all the great videos you have made on your solar setup, and it was cool seeing your son help you. Cherish those moments, before too long he will be grabbbing the tools from you and fixing it himself :)

    • @AdamDeLay07
      @AdamDeLay07  ปีที่แล้ว

My issues with lights seem to be sporadic. Some are due to me trying to dim the lights, others I can’t pinpoint exactly what’s going on. Nothing as bad as I’ve seen on other channels. My flickering is so faint, it doesn’t get picked up well by a camera, but you can see it with your naked eye.
While there are some issues, I look at it like I’m still better off than where I was with my 12v system. Plus I didn’t buy top of the line equipment. I got the budget models. So part of it is on me.
SS is a whole other story…

Chromebooks have their place. I find they work best for those not technically savvy because there's not much too them.
As far as figuring out the port, I'm not sure if the 6000s use the same program or not for firmware updates, but one of the programs for the 6500s was able to auto-detect the port.
I know that I tried multiple times to make my own Cat-5 to USB cable for the 6500 and couldn't get it to work at all. There's some kind of special communication required and I just couldn't find the right USB cable needed for it (outside of just buying the one from Watts247).

Can you break the split-phase configuration and go back to SIG mode during the time you would normally get the error? That would at least narrow down which inverter is the issue. I'm guessing it's gonna need to be replaced because of some problem with the MPPT board. Typically if there's a fault on one inverter when in split phase, both will shut down to prevent damaging anything.
Keep in mind when you break the split phase configuration, you don't want to attempt to run any 240v loads you already have wired up.
