Keith Emersons Clavinet
Kerry Minear of Gentle Giant made brilliant use of the different timbres these are capable of. His had some sort of switchable mute that deadened the resonance of it somehow.

If I'm not mistaken, Kerry Minnear played the D6 model, which (like the later E7 and Duo models) had a sliding mute on the right side of the keyboard. It was basically a piece of wood with some felt attached, and it could be moved in place to mechanically dampen the strings at one end.
Kerry's use of the clavinet was truly inspired, and often very different from the funky grooves associated with the instrument by then. Another great player who used the clavinet in a slightly different way was Jon Lord, who played it quite a lot during his stint with Whitesnake.
@@MPPelli fascinating! My brother borrowed a harpsichord for a while that had a mechanical mute pretty much as you describe. In a sense Kerry used his Clavinet as an amplified harpsichord or clavichord. In an off-kilter sense his playing is quite funky, or at least 'in the pocket'.
I love how weird all of these videos get at one point or another.

I guess there were some companies that would install whammy bars in clavinets. It was a major undertaking from what I've read. Great vid.

Basically an electric clavichord.
These were great through a wah/autowah
The Clavinet was Hohner's Electric Clavichord, Vintage Vibe has made it as the Vibanet

Beautiful figured black walnut cabinet! At first I was impressed with Hohner’s effort until I got to the part it was new. I’ve got a Calvinet Il and the particle board it is made from is not so pretty.
Yes it was made of naff wood originally I think. The owner really pushed the boat out for this restoration!
What a cool piece of music history! In addition to the Dada album, you can hear Don playing it on the song "Past Orbits of Dust" on Renaissance's Illusion album, featuring the underrated Jane Relf on lead vocals.
Didn't the Beatles get some of their gear from Minn's?

Was lucky enough to find an E7 in a Pawn shop for £120 on Leith Walk, in the mid 90's. Only needed to change the Hammer tips so far, perhaps due an M.O.T soon. Luckily there is an amazing guy not so far from me that will do a fantastic job.
I never realized that the Clavinet's action was situated that way. It's the original "slap bass" (and treble.)
Hello Steve. Great video! I have a question: if the clavinet is a kind of electrified clavichord, with tangents leaning on strings, is there a possibility to vibrate the string by pressing the key harder (like 'Bebung' in clavichord)? Greetings from Poland!
Thanks Marcin! - yes if you hold a key down it will allow you to bend the note a bit, and moving it up and down softly and rapidly will create some buzzing noise but will continue to vibrate the string - it is a bit hit and miss though! Thanks for your interest :)

Hello Steve, What a wonderful and entertaining video presentation of the Hohner L Clavinet.
I accidentally found your channel while looking for hammer/rubber replacement information on the D6 model. I bought my D6 Clavinet new in 1979 or 1980 and gigged with it for several years. It's still in near mint condition with the exception of rubber widgets.
If you might know of a reputable resource in Northern California that could service a D6 Clavinet I'd very much appreciate it. Thank You. 🎹

Good for you guys for coming up with a modern analogous preamp. I'm building a regular and a whammy clav this summer without that stuff. Just Telecaster wiring should be plenty.
Not sure abut changing electronics on a historic instrument, but I guess there's no option when info just isn't available (or increasingly, it seems, parts not available!) Nice job, and nice sund.
Cheers Tony - yes it was a question of leaving it stood in a corner not working forever or rebuilding something it so it did work. The circuitry is based on a very similar preamp design, but with a few tweaks, so it sounds true to the original, certainly with the germanium transistors.

Yes! That’s the very same. And we have the Bird Organ in storage and in need of restoration and plan to do a video of it one day. We are also planning on filming a Soul Agents interview special with Don Shinn and Tony Good.

This restoration brings a lot of honour for the Hohner's owner - not only because of it's a very rare instrument, but especially due to the craftmanship while rebuilding and the reverse engineering of the circuitry!
Pressing the keys intonates history, intervals of decades and it is a sheer pleasure to watch; not less as the vintage "Batman"-series was for me when I was a child. Thanks a lot for sharing :-)!
All the little details like finding substitutes for the Germanium transisors which are not available anymore, the customized battery power supply including the self-made circuit board - that is a treasure in terms of keeping the knowledge of electronic music instruments alive. Fortunately, because it's so much lost here.

@@louisarevolta Thank you for responding, Louisa, that was my goal! Because the effects on pronounciation of an native English speaker are completely unpredictable for me. Tounge twisters seems to be not transferable, because e.g. the "Pheasant Plucker's Song" brings no difficulties to repeat for me and thus maybe for German speakers in general. All the best :-)!
