Godwin String Concert SC749 Analog poly Synth Demonstration

- In this video Steve Christie demonstrates the Godwin String Concert SC749 synthesiser from the mid 1970s. Manufactured by the company Sisme, Italy.
The 749 is a polyphonic string synth with full keyboard polyphony, three octave registers with simple tone, modulation, tremolo, attack, sustain and volume controls.
Steve plays a few tunes and references Giampiero Boneschi’s ‘Intimate’ from the 1974 CAM LIBRARY LP ‘A New Sensation In Sound (The New Sound Of A Voice)’ which may or may not have been recorded with a Godwin, but it sounds exactly the same.
It all sounds very like a Solina string ensemble.

Love the sound of it. I love the old string machines anyway, and of course the Solina through a phaser 🥰, but I bet this would be incredible through one also

Many thanks for demonstrating the two Godwin synthesizers. Sounds great! In fact you need at least two to get a lead violin - you never get the concert running with just one Godwin. All of the audience would say: "Why it is called Godwin Concert when there is no tutti. That's only a solo. Can't be, our reality collapses ..." It's not about smugness at all, it's about saving the orchestral reality, sir!

Fader controls are a fine thing which I like, too. Maybe because used to the equaliser interface from the first stereo since I was young? All the best :-)!
I am bery familiar with the KPM ad Bruton music libraries. My first studio work was with a production studio that recorded tons of radio and television commercials. We also produced sound tracks for corporate AV presentations.
Had the 849 version for many years..extra solo brass and string sections....still sublime sounding with a decent reverb..
Crumar Performer modulation section gives a similar effect to the Godwin one

Cheers - the mic was unfortunately placed, but does the job fine - was about 2mm away from stand haha!

Im suprised that the chorus is quite mild for a string machine. The sliders are good in a live situation for a expression control, a substitute for a touch response or aftertouch.

Anyone know the difference between the 249 and the SC749 ?
They look identical. . . . . [EDIT] (got this from a German website), from what I can tell the '249' is a typo, it appears in a few references on the internet, probably all stemming from the same place, but the actual model is called the 749, there is no 249.

@@organfairy Well, most string synths like the ARP Solina, to my knowledge were paraphonic, having single-triggered envelopes across the entire keyboard. Individual VCAs are usually premium in this.
@@eddievhfan1984 I have heard a lot of these too - they sound odd to me, coming from the organ world. It's probably down to what the designers of the string machines were used to make: If they came from the organ world they tried to make it polyphonic but a synth designer would go for the paraphonic design. I had a organ once that had a small circuit board for each key, containing two simple diode based VCAs (actually it was a voltage controlled clipper) - one for the organ voices and the other for the piano(ish) voices, and each had their own simple envelope generator. 44 little circuit boards side by side in a tiny rack next to the tone generator board.
The Logan string melody has individual ad envelopes for all keys. I am just have on on my bench. Water damage... But it's coming along.
Given the interest in these "vintage" instruments, you'd think somebody would bring out a modern clone - trouble is, it would probably be (ugh) Behringer.
The behringer ones are actually not bad and very well built. They are halfway between the real thing and a plug-in
The Waldorf Streichfett and STVC are also vely good

Yes, but it’s actually the sound of the keys being played, not acoustic transferral through a stand touching a mic

@@VintageKeysStudio I found a Logan string melody mk1 in the flea market. Water damage. But all chips ok I think. Starts to sound about right now.
