This is by far the best historical and complete description of Black Annis !! I came across the tale while researching my last name "Annis" I have learned that when pronouncing Agnes the G is silent. So it sounds like Anes which became Annis. Agnes means Purity and so does Annis. Thank You so much for this Video!!

We have a similar Water Spirit to Black Annis near where I live on the River Ribble, the river requires a soul every seven years.
Sadly a great deal of North Lancashire seems to be overlooked by folklorists, we have the odd thing but I've never, in many years of looking, found a book talking about our area's folklore.

Totally agree, being a Lancashire lass it is so hard to find Lancashire folklore recorded. I had a book years ago, tiny publisher, about the folklore of Lancashire, but I can't find my copy... AND the publisher closed down donkeys years ago so I can't get another.... however I will be adding more Lancashire content :)

There were 3 that lived in my gardens. They were not scary at all. One of them would take sips of my wine with me and was always very polite.

There was a fairy that lived in the apartment above us when I was 15. From what I recall he wasn’t very tall, his head never got above the level of my belt buckle.

"black-uniformed dominican nun" dominican nuns wear white! only their cappa (cloak) is black, and they wear it generally only during lent though in some convents they wear it during other celebrations. a fully professed nun's veil is also black. benedictines wear black habits, so perhaps that is a more likely option. i'm going to be a dominican nun so this really stuck out to me lol

Very interesting, of course fairy don't like humans too much, and I understand why, but it because humans cruel and evil attitude to nature, that's why they like this, but not they so bad, but humans imagination of them,so it's fears 😨 humans not evil nature fairy I think, if humans don't love nature , why fairy must love humans and treat people well, if they don't respect even nature..., of course it's only my own

*_"And yet there are some Faerie folk who don't seem to have any redeeming features at all."_*
In that case they fit right into the 2020s...🙄
