I left my family of brother, sister and mum in Norway at 17 to come back to England to my father in 1991. He died suddenly 3 years later aged 48. He was a huge Dylan fan and I knew nothing of Dylan. One thing my dad used to say to me when we parted ways was "I'll see you in the sky above, in the tall grass, in the ones I love" and I never really thought much of it other than it was a nice quirky way of saying goodbye. A week or so after he died I listened to some of his CDs and knowing he loved Dylan I decided to listen to the entire album this song came from. When I heard that line that he had said so much my heart leapt and I felt such joy - remember, I had never heard it before, only from him. And then I heard the complete line for the first time "...You're gonna make me lonesome when you go" and I burst into tears with a tremendous feeling of love.

Once at 'The Fleadh' in London's Finsbury Park, when he played Tangled Up In Blue, and another time at Portsmouth Guildhall, when he played It Ain't Me Babe - a song that wasn't even one of my favourites (but judging by the amount of other people in tears at the same moment, he must have hit the song's sweet spot that night). I've seen Dylan dozens of times, in several countries, and I've never heard him perform "Lonesome", but one thing's for sure - if I ever do see him play that song I'll be bawling my eyes out like a child that's lost his favourite toy, his pet dog, and his mother...all on the same day.

A few years ago my gf at the times mom adopted an elderly dog who only had a few months to live. It was clear he was abused, he had scars all over him and was very stand offish and affraid of everything. He didnt trust anyone, slept all the time and wouldnt let anyone touch him. She took him to the vet and found he wasnt as old as they thought, he was just sad. He slept by himself on the couch downstairs and was always alone. My gf and I moved in with her mom 3 weeks after she got him and he immediately took a liking to me for some reason. Shortly after moving in we got Covid and I was forced to sleep downstairs in a recliner. He came to sleep with me and the whole time NEVER left my side, not even to eat. We began to bond and I fell in love with him. He was the kindest, sweetest, funniest dog I've ever met. He began to liven up, let me pet him and he figured out he loved to snuggle. We both did actually. He was always by my side and followed me everywhere. When it was time to move out my gf's mom said "you know you have to take him right?" which I didnt even know was a question as I made sure the apt we found took dogs cuz I now had one. The 6 months he was supposed to live turned into 6 years. I dont have litterally any friends or children and my gf and I broke up but I was never alone and always felt loved. Really, it's the only time in my life I felt loved. He was literally my best friend and the most meaningful relationship I've ever had. I love that dog with every inch of my heart and never took a minute we had together for granted....He died 2 months ago yesterday and my heart is shattered. He was more than a dog he was my best friend and I miss him more than I ever thought possible. Now I'm all alone except for a box of ashes. This song reminds me how it felt when he was here, a feeling I never want to forget. I pray to God I'll see him again one day and will miss my little buddy every second until then.
Thanks Billy Crystal, for bringing me here....Here Today. Great movie 🎥 @Tiffany Haddish 💓 great job! You made this movie, extra special. I laughed and cried all the way through.

Not by a long shot. But one of the best álbums from 70's, perhaps.
No wonder he got a Nobel Prize in literature, this song alone deserves it.

Bob Dylan must have been crazy in love with this lady to have written and composed a song that is so sublimely beautiful.

I think if he was crazy in love he would probably chase a bit more:)

He’s said countless times these songs aren’t personal. Not every writer is autobiographical. In fact, the best ones usually aren’t. Pure talent.

Bob is my favorite singer songwriter of all time! I have been listening to him since I was 10 years old. I was born FeB 1954. The first album I ever bought was Free Wheelin Bob Dylan. I have been a fan for 58 years.
Makes me tear up, song is so precious.
"You're gonna make me wonder what I'm saying" leaves me crying every time
amazing
absolutely superb you funky little song and dance man
This is the soundtrack to my life these days ... Thank you, Bob ❤
thanks for Bobs music ..... such lovely lyrics .*************
I’ve seen love go by my door
It’s never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow
Been shooting in the dark too long
When somethin’s not right it’s wrong
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go
Dragon clouds so high above
I’ve only known careless love
It’s always hit me from below
This time around it’s more correct
Right on target, so direct
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go
Purple clover, Queen Anne’s Lace
Crimson hair across your face
You could make me cry if you don’t know
Can’t remember what I was thinkin’ of
You might be spoilin’ me too much, love
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go
Flowers on the hillside, bloomin’ crazy
Crickets talkin’ back and forth in rhyme
Blue river runnin’ slow and lazy
I could stay with you forever and never realize the time
Situations have ended sad
Relationships have all been bad
Mine’ve been like Verlaine’s and Rimbaud
But there’s no way I can compare
All those scenes to this affair
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go
Yer gonna make me wonder what I’m doin’
Stayin’ far behind without you
Yer gonna make me wonder what I’m sayin’
Yer gonna make me give myself a good talkin’ to
I’ll look for you in old Honolulu
San Francisco, Ashtabula
Yer gonna have to leave me now, I know
But I’ll see you in the sky above
In the tall grass, in the ones I love
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go

Thank you for the lyrics. Very kind of you ...
Kind of like verlain and rimbaud.
I love this beautiful romantic ditty.
Makes you want to fall in love.
Or just remember, i do when i hear this song.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
Great artist, beautiful Sing.
What a song absolutely fantastic thanks yours sincerely Gary
Beautiful and sad but beautiful 💠
Blood on the Tracks was perfect from the first song to the last. This was a wonderful ending. Huge Dylan fan I am!!!!
Hello Judith
How are you doing
Nice meeting you here
Happy new year
One of the first Dylan songs I learnt to play on guitar, as I was inspired by the whole album.. Like Verlaine and Rimbaud! Just beautiful.
I think I'm Addicted to listening to this
the way he sings here is out of this world, breaks my heart every time
Thanks Billy Crystal, for bringing me here....Here Today. Great movie 🎥
@Tiffany Haddish 💓 great job! You made this movie, extra special. I laughed and cried all the way through.
Hello Dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I think I've got some grit in my eye
I heard that when it first came out, and I still can't believe the easy genius of the writing. I'm so fortunate to have grown up in his era. I feel really sorry for people who only know about today's music. If you can call it that.
These lyrics are simple genius. I am in awe at . . .
_"You're gonna make me give myself a good talkin' to."_
Thanks again, Bob! I remember the mid seventies.
Writing masterpiece.
Blood on the track, in my opinion is one of his best album. It leaves a stain of indelible blood on your mind.
Bob Dylan, amo de mais seu trabalho!
"I've looked for you in old Honolulu, San Francisco and Ashtabula..."
Having lived near Ashtabula all my life, this line delights me. 😊
Love you Bob D. 💕on point 💝

I thought about only one person when I first heard this song, and now he's dead. the lyrics apply even more now, especially the end. I look for him everywhere and find him in people I love
Love this Bob Dylan song If you see him say Hello. XX
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
So atmospheric in it's metaphorical transcendence
You’re gonna make give myself a good talking to!!!!!!
So sad considering all the upheaval in his life at the time. But i cant help but smile listening to Bob
DYLAN, ROLLING STONES AND BEATLES ......THATS MOST OF IT !!!!!!!!!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL...Simply jaw dropping in its brillance
Perfect lyrics if you're a romantic, as I am.

Bob Dylan : "When somethin's not right it's wrong."
Also Bob Dylan (in the same album) : "What's bad is good, what's good is bad" 😂
Man oh man that's tricky 😂😂😂
Even gives us a paradox... how much more can he put in one album?
