    • @fqexpat
      @fqexpat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

Hell, if I get much older ... I'll be dead! But, I've been listening to good ole Bob Zimmerman since '64, or was it '63? Whatever, it was a long time ago, and yeah, he does have a certain genius, and like so many other geniuses, he gets misread and misinterpreted quite a bit. Regarding the album this song is on, it's got to be one of the most poignant collection of sad songs I've ever heard. When this album came out in '75, I'd just been "dumped" by the woman I'd been seeing for quite awhile and this was like an album of theme music for me until I got my emotional self back together again. It's only recently that I can listen to it without slipping into a space filled with sad memories. Now, send me a bill for this "session" and I'll send you a check.

BOB DYLAN so deserved the NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE!!! He put into poetry everything that was going on in the world and took us along for the ride, and we understood it and loved IT!!! ROCK ON, BOB!!!! HOPE YOU LIVE another 100 YEARS...A DEVOTED FAN since I was 14 ; heard that first song, played on my "Barbie"record player until it had grooves on it and no longer could be played. I knew immediately I was on to someone who was speaking my language and my life. I could go on and go on, but anyone giving him ad ulation will know what I feel. I'm in the process of putting to memory all my favorite verses; trouble is they are ALL my favorites!!!!!! Love You

From a song, no one can put a film of life inside your head like Bob Dylan can.

No, it was dumb to give the Nobel in literature to a songwriter - nepotistic and tunnel visioned. Millions of book writers, past and now, could’ve received it instead of a songwriter. Songwriters have their own awards. It was an insult.

There are other wordsmiths in the music world, each of them unique in their own right. They each have their own "voice", a way of turning a phrase, weaving words together, that you just recognize as THEM when you hear the lines. Dylan is the stand-out for me in the 60s.

"Suddenly I turned around and she was standing there...with silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair...she walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns..come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm." My late husband really admired Bob Dylan, and my husband was quite a man so that says a lot to me in and of itself. He LOVED Bob Dylan. I do too, but now I feel warm but sad when I hear his songs. I want my husband with me and singing along or playing his guitar along with it. Not having him here playing Dylan's songs..........I don't have words how it feels. Others like me will understand. My situation is not unique. He played a lot of Dylan's songs on his Martin. Those are among my favorite times with him. We enjoyed playing and singing Dylan songs and some others minimum 3 times a week. We'd sit across from each other on the sofa, play guitar and singing together! I mean, how awesome is that to do with your hubby!!! So: THANK YOU Bob, for sharing your genius. I don't think there will be another like Dylan, ever. I am also very grateful Bob wrote some of the most amazing music of all time and because of that, along with the music, I have these memories of my husband, that are very dear. It's pretty cool. When Bob's album Blood on the Tracks came out I played it over and over. It was THE best album he ever did. It still plays as good as when it first came out. Every song a wonderful single to be savoured. Bob is now 82 years old and he will surely, " make me lonesome when he goes." I hope he stays around a few more years. As I edit this to change Mr. Dylan's age, over the weekend on 1 September 2023, Jimmy Buffett passed away from a rare form of skin cancer.

Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation and she gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence I got repaid with scorn
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
    Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Dylan classics, as with many Van Morrison classics, are, for me, much like great art works. By that I mean they all have an indefinable, intangible 'something' that puts them well above just being great songs. Its not especially the lyrics, not especially the tune, nor the chorus, but they have a magic that goes straight through you and you never tire of experiencing that brilliance.

Yep. I think this song can only be really understood by a person like you, and me when I heard it years ago. It is about the painful hurt and disappointment in a failed relationship and trust. Notice all the biblical metaphors too, "I offered up my innocence, I got repaid with scorn." It was after this that Dylan got into this Gospel trend, which unfortunately didn't last either. It's too sad really.

I love this song. It reminds me of a time when I was kinda just drifting around and met a great man. Regardless of his sexuality, age, education level or lifestyle he was a dear friend of mine.... He respected my boundaries and never made me feel like I was a bad man and inspired me to let go of all the pain and love and live again. He was gay and I am not, but regardless I loved him as a friend and cherished our time together and all the conversations we had. I never knew he was a dying man and I didn't want to believe it whe he said he'd be dead by the time I graduated from college. 3 years later I came home after graduation and was applying to pharmacy school and find out he'd past away. I'm in my P1 year and honestly if I'd never met him.... I don't think i would have ever got my head back from out the clouds and clean up my life and get focused. I miss you Roger LaPrade, this is for you. God bless you may you rest in peace! I can still you smiling singing this with me still my friend. Until we meet again... RIP
