  • Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, and Kevin Wildes discuss Denver Broncos coaching issues with head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Broussard explains it would not be a big deal if the Broncos fired Hackett after their Week 8 Matchup vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars. Nick explains firing Hackett will not do anything beneficial for the team because it will only highlight deeper issues with Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson.

The team (mostly the offense) is undisciplined, unprepared and lacks attention to detail. That's on Russ and Hackett.

Russ has open receivers on nearly every play. For whatever reason this year he is not seeing them. That's very concerning going forward because it isn't a physical issue anyone can point to with him. This is deer in headlights syndrome and Shannon Sharpe on one of his bits summed it up really well by saying this year he looks like he don't want to get hit and once you lose that edge it's usually gone for good.

Attitudes aside, would Russell Wilson's performance have cratered this bad in 2022 had he not been traded from the Seahawks? I don't think so. I'm guessing his shortcomings of visibility etc. are probably very well-known by Pete Carroll and that's probably part of why he wouldn't let him "cook". Hackett's solution to this visibility issue is apparently to go shotgun...a lot. They need to be more innovative with how Russell works, and Hackett is proving incapable of doing it.

There was a time where I would want to see a player play through an injury and tough it out. But lately, I'm noticing a guy at 70% is probably worse than his backup. And by playing you're probably making the recovery take longer. I have respect for the Chargers kicker making field goals with one leg, but if my team has a corner or a receiver with a quad or hamstring issue, I would rather he just sit and get right.
If Russ was having an MVP season, sure, maybe see if he can gut it out. But he's not playing well when he's healthy. All he's going to do now is risk putting out even worse tape to scare away future coaches.

Nick makes sense in terms of why you might keep Hackett. However, I think long-term, that’s a cancerous thing to do to a team. Firing the coach now sends the team a message that you care about winning, and a team who believes they don’t have the right coach, has some sense of hope that the organization is serious about turning things around. If you keep the coach, you send a signal to the locker room that as an organization, you want to deliberately tank. And these players have limited windows where they can have an NFL career. Each year is precious to that player who is one injury away from never playing the game again. Or just one more year and age which makes them one step closer to being outside their prime.

Show me another QB who doesn’t try to lead the same ways that he does. Yes this season has been terrible but he’s actually played pretty well and they would have 0 wins if he wasn’t there.
