Beyond the killing of trapper and conviction of barber thia story has a wow moment when it comes to blues headstone. Someone out there has a good heart to go way back in there and do the work to fix it up after it was desecrated.
Interesting, I wonder if the presence of the son sent the barber over the edge. He probably thought that if Trapper died he would inherit the claim and then the lost son shows up. Kudos to the installation of the steel plate at the right angle to stop the nonsense. Between the trash dumped, busted glass bottles and anything sitting still being riddled with holes the Arizona desert takes a beating.
Damn- these stories aren’t long enough!! They are a fascinating and very important historical record of the Superstition Mountains and the people, good characters and bad, who have explored them in the eternal search for easy gold.... that very rarest of things.......
I remember reading the newspaper story of the barbers arrest. He was cutting a customers hair at the A J Plaza when the deputies walked in... I started cutting my own hair after that...
Its terrible some reprobate shot up Blue's headstone. Some people lack a soul. Thanks for bringing this story to us. Appreciate much. Good job. Lvya. D
This is so wild... I lived in AJ for two years in junior high school, my stepdad was friends with Trapper. We moved away in 1989. I remember his truck, it was green and the tailgate was painted with a paintbrush, mountain scene and it said TRAPPER. I remember thinking what a cool name Blue was for a dog. I was probably 12 years old.
Great story as usual guys, I live down by Ruby mine and ghost town, Arizona, Mexican border and would not live anywhere else , Arizona is the best place in earth, hands down....
Great video! Howard “Trapper” Welbourne was the great grandfather of my girlfriend (and also the great great grandfather to my 2 children). Before Howard married Hal’s mother and had 4 children, he had 2 children back in Wisconsin. One of them was Dennis Welbourne. It was great to see the photo of Howard in this video, hadn’t seen it before. It seems like a lot of people in this video know people who knew Howard and Hal. I’m wondering if anyone knew my girlfriend’s grandfather Dennis? I know he lived in Phoenix, but would visit Howard sometimes in the 1970s. I’ve heard the story of Howard’s murder from his stepson Mark.
The barber died in prison. He cut my hair for almost 10 years. The story at the time was that he had gone off some of his medications and flipped out. It was also said that he reloaded his pistol and emptied it again into Trapper.
I had a friend as a kid who has a family member that was deemed criminally insane and put in an asylum, from what his family still says, that's a sentence i wouldn't wish upon anyone, going to an insane asylum is far far worse than any prison you could be sent too they say, not sure how true that is but it can't be no easy ride that's for sure, great story as always, love these videos so much.
Love to get more details on this story I've been hearing of Howard my whole life. I'm related to the Ruiz's and have been on that beautiful land many times!
Blue heelers are very protective of the buddies. If you mess with thier Dad, you better kill them. Very muscular and a bad ass set of jaws. So sad RIP.
The barber was probably waiting for the old guy to die before revealing his find. The arrival of the son made him realize he wouldn't get it all.....the son would get his dads share. So he went bonkers. He must have thought he knew where to mine but hadnt done it yet. Who knows but thx for the great story
A grind hole is a hole made in a rock -usually a large surface rock that is made by an ancient Indian tool called a manos or hard stone. It is used to grind mesquite or palo verde beans into a flower used as a food staple by Ancient Indians possibly to make a flat bread or to mix with berries and meat and animal fat to use during the winter months. They are found all over the Superstition Mts. and other locations all over Arizona. It is thought that these holes about 8-12 inches deep were used by early Mexican/Spanish miners to grind ore into gold or silver dust to store into pouches easy for transportation. Some times there are many grind holes in one large rock which indicates many Indians lived there in the summer months! At the place called N. Black Mt. near Knife Rock there are many grind holes there. see the episode on Knife Rock!! I cant attach a photo to this type of message . Email me at azjack212@gmail.com and I will email you back some photos.
They are temporarily out of print. The printing cost has risen and I was Trying to hold the cost as the same as before but I may have to sell them myself. Giving them to stores to sell will be too difficult so try me again in a few months you can try my email azjack212@gmail.com -thanks!
That man's memory is uncanny! Names, dates....instant recall and photographic memory. Beside that, he knows how to keep it all interesting...amazing! I hope someone picked his brains and put all on tape. Where is Hollywood while he is still alive? All they would have to put together would be the facts! Plus it would also make THE most amazing documentary in 5 to six episodes. You could not put it into one episode! It shows once again what caliber people came to this country from all circumstances from all over the world, lived under the worst circumstances and hardship only to get murdered and all for the freedom of forging your own life and ending up better that when you arrived! This convinces me beyond any doubt why Socialism will never work in this country in the long-run: People need the Freedom to do for themselves and nothing is too difficult to achieve their dreams! People do not want to sit back and get hand-outs and free healthcare and free phones and free schools and free everything! These who settle for that are the losers and you can find them all over the world! The people who make great countries succeed are the doers, the brave men and women who insist on doing for themselves... for the Freedom to be able to do for themselves and obviously, are willing to pay the price! They are the people who made our history and will continue to do so! Their motto: Don't think for me, don't speak for me and don't decide for me!
You see, your problem is, you're trying to find a rational reason from an irrational person. Crazy people react normally from a skewed point of view. Their outlook on reality is nothing like ours. For all we know he thought his friend was an alien or a giant purple bunny rabbit. There is literally no telling.
