Hans was a bad plot twist, Hans being the mirror is so scarcely credible that I only believe it because someone had to be the mirror, and Lost in the Woods was a highlight in that mess of a sequel. But, I will not deny I love Frozen.
Another great video! You’ve got a gift

So glad you talked about the Tangled vs Frozen “rivalry” it was so annoying to see everywhere to the point that it retroactively made me dislike Tangled when I initially loved it. Why we gotta pit two girbosses against each other???

Literally! Liking Tangled essentially making you "not like other girls," like come on, you can like both Tangled *and* Frozen. They're both good movies with good stories, good characters, good music/songs, and good themes.

Wow, this is one of the best video essays I've seen for this movie. When I was watching it I thought this channel had to have atleast 100k+ subscribers and was shocked to see that it was much lower. Your points are all so well thought out, and the way you described the symbolism in the two films helped me see them in a totally different light. I couldn't help but agree with all of your points as well, as they really do make sense and are exactly what I was thinking, I just couldn't put them into words like you did. All of that to say well done 👏👏

  • @Deus_Ex_Malcontent

Ok, before I say anything I wanted to thank you, if for nothing else the for these two points: calling them out for their attempted rehabilitate Anna and Elsa's parents. They were awful and no amount of retconning is going to change that. Full stop. Second, I will FOREVER love and be indebted to you for taking people to task for their inexplicable need make the comparison between "Tangled" and "Frozen." My wife does this and I die a little inside every time she does. lol.
I also very much appreciated you referencing the documentary they made on the making of the movie. In that they mentioned how they edited out and reshot something like 20-30 minutes of the film because the arch of parts of the story was getting to "adult" and they wanted to make the points more relatable to kids, who, let's face it, are ultimately the films target. I wonder how those missing minutes may have improved some of the point you made.
I don't know if you watch any content from "Overly Sarcastic Productions" but previously "Red" mentioned Frozen II during a video on sequels. This is a broad sweep at the movie and speaks more to it's function as a sequel as opposed to the more "deep dive" you took, but as a fellow "Frozen" lover, I'd love to have your thought's on this point:
“Frozen II” takes the happy ending established in the first movie-sisters reunited, Elsa's magic under control, et cetera- and expands on it very slightly to make a starting point for the second movie: sisters a bit unhealthily codependent, Elsa's powers starting to grow in weird ways, Elsa too reckless with her newfound personal freedom, Anna extremely worried about Elsa running off again and getting into trouble. When Elsa's magic accidentally awakens four pissed off elemental spirits, they go on a journey of self-discovery to fix it and save the kingdom. By the end, the sisters have uncovered the generations-old conspiracy that angered the spirits in the first place, discovered the secret story of how their parents first met, and also traumatically relive how their parents died searching for answers about Elsa's powers. Elsa has functionally become a god, and also temporarily died, and Anna has been through the absolute wringer, what with the dead parents/abandoned my sister/dead sister/dead snowman quadruple threat, and, consequently, stepped up to develop the emotional maturity, personal responsibility, and big picture perspective required to rule as queen. Meanwhile, Elsa has fully come into her own as what is functionally a goddess and completed a two-movie character arc that started with her as a self-imposed prisoner trapped by her fear, middled with her still somewhat trapped by her responsibilities as queen, and ended with her completely free and at peace with herself for the first time ever. It's a sequel good enough that it retroactively makes the climactic happy ending of the first movie feel like a narrative midpoint. Sure, Anna and Elsa are happy at the end of Frozen, but Anna's still a klutzy goofball who's just happy to have her sister back, and Elsa thinks not accidentally injuring anyone is the extent of her power. Anna's not ready to be queen, and Elsa hasn't fully come into her own. It's a happy ending on its own, but the sequel actually makes it seem retroactively incomplete, which is damn impressive!"
As always, LOVE your content. I genuinely liked both of the Frozen films and appreciate you doing this.

I'd honestly never thought of it like that, but that point is excellent! Anna becoming queen is one of my favorite narrative points from Frozen II, and that quote totally enriches that plot development for me. Even in the first movie where she's primarily portrayed as a klutzy goofball, she's always been the first to show initiative, which naturally segues into her becoming Arendelle's leader.
Thank you as always for your wonderful insights and sincere kindness -- it always brightens my day to see a comment from you! :)

Thank you for the kind words, I very much look forward to your posts! And my name is Richard btw. @JennyCook57
I'm trying to be positive with the prospects of there being a third chapter especially with the same creative team being onboard. I'm not willing to be crass enough to think this is just Disney trying to squeeze every penny they can from the franchise, I mean, Frozen II worked because there was still clearly something to say. I guess there still is insofar as what are the origins of Elsa's powers and why it was her and not Anna (maybe with a sprinkling of Kristoff's backstory?) so I'm being cautiously optimistic.
Thanks again, looking forward to your next post!

I've always liked tangled more but thats never been because I thought frozen was bad, and the people who told be that tangled was better i always thought were wrong but i never really thought about how they're completely different movies. I really didn't like frozen for some time due to it being EVERYWHERE and having a young sibling who loved it, but at a sleepover my friends and i watched it for the first time in years and my first thought at the end was literally just "why tf do people hate this its good?". Honestly I think the parent trope in frozen 2 allowed Anna and Elsa to develop realistically as characters. Like by the end of the 1st movie, the characters had reconciled and Elsa had learned to rely on Anna rather than just herself like she’d always done. However the 2nd movie picks up with Elsa struggling with her past tendencies, and even at one point she gave into them when she decided to leave Anna behind to follow her mothers voice to Ahtohallan. And Idk i think that’s a very realistic thing; struggling with the past even if you’re past it.

Top-notch and admirable review. You should be more famous.
Regarding this, You are wholly correct: after Frozen conquered the world and rose up so high, it became the crux of unnatural hatred by those who felt peculiar or Superior to those who were fond of Frozen. In my opinion, disliking something being overrated and overexposed is fine, but abominating the thing itself merely because it's well-liked and not because it is bad is childish and not representative of a well-realized understanding of the situation. I also consult about it being rather futile to compare Frozen to Tangled, they are too divergent. I much more prefer Frozen though, except for the antagonist.
As for the movie, it is phenomenal even after such a prolonged time. The dynamic between Elsa and Anna is astounding: it is such a gorgeous driving force throughout and the execution is brilliant. The soundtrack remains unmatched, as does animation quality. The humor is great too, and since i adore Winter, the aesthetic is exquisite 💙 I didn't like the villian, Hans that much. The concept is good but he was underutilized in my opinion, and he didn't perform much contributive actions to the story. I adore the evil depictions of Anna, though, and i think that would have been magnificent for the movie. Please don't demolish me for this.
It isn't perfect, but what is objectively perfect? Frozen and its sequel are disney's best movie. There, i stated it.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney film ever, so if I do wind up making a video about it, I'd want it to be special. People equating something being popular to it being bad is pretty annoying. I'm not totally innocent of it either. While I can count on one hand the situations where I became annoyed that something was more popular than something I preferred, those cases DO exist for me. And it doesn't mean that popularity is unwarranted. Frozen was fun. It had great songs, fun characters, and an interesting deconstruction of the concept of love. It's totally okay to not like it if it's not your cup of tea. And I *get* how annoying it is when something you were kind of neutral on before just keeps getting shoved into your face when you just don't see the appeal. I've been trying to get better at just letting people enjoy things and knowing how to positively engage in conversation when characters or pieces of media I personally dislike get brought up in the conversation. There's no need to get up in arms about it. Something something "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." It's okay to critique, but dumping on something popular just to make people feel inferior or to fluff up your own ego is pretty scummy.

Also, does your dislike for the Tangled series extend to Cassandra/Cassunzel, by any chance?

    • @JennyCook57
      @JennyCook57  ปีที่แล้ว +8

Cassandra? Yes. Cassunzel? No (never been that big of a shipper, personally) Cass-and Season 1 Varian-both blame Rapunzel for stuff that is objectively not her fault, and their entitled attitudes made it extremely difficult for me to sympathize with them as antagonists. I also hated the twist about Eugene’s backstory, Season 3 dragged on and on, and the art style always triggered the uncanny valley effect in my head. The idea of making the series look like one of her paintings/journal entries is really cool, but Flash animation rarely ever results in characters who move like natural human beings. I really wanted to like the show, but it was a really frustrating watch for me.

People are allowed to like and dislike whatever they want, it is called having a preference and there is absolutely nothing wrong about it, and you look like you should be old enough to already have this knowledge, just saying. I personally hate this awful excuse of a movie for bastardizing Snow Queen's story and it's big-screen potential, I find Elsa to be TERRIBLE protagonist and an even worse rule model (she was perfectly happy letting her citizens die and send a snow monster after her "beloved" sister, and oh yeah didn't she zap her in the heart and did completely deadly squad about it? heroine of the century ladies and gentlemen, Disney should have kept her as a vilain) not to mention every time I hear "Let it go" I want to pull Van Gogh and cut my ears off. Saying that my feelings about it aren't valid and that I and other people who happen to share the same opinions as I am are "just big meanies" is stupid plus it makes you look like a toddler throwing a tantrum. We live in a colorful world and all people are different so get over it. I do my best not to push my opinions onto others however I hate people like you, who just can't accept the fact that not everybody likes your favorite princess movie. Seriously how old are you? There are much bigger issues in the world than the fact that some people happen to dislike Frozen.

Funny how people only say “there are more important things” when someone is making a critique. Rarely see that energy when someone is being positive about something. Strange. Opinions go both ways, and people are allowed to defend things they like.
