  • This video required many years of training and preparation. Im very excited about winning best overall lady fighter at my very first tournament, ive heard that doing so well in your first HEMA tournament is not so common a thing. I think i have done a good job to prove that historical south east asian weapon arts can stand toe to toe with HEMA at high levels of competition. I'm not even the best fighter that arnis and krabi krabong has to offer ive never competed in such a high level at those sports, only trained. I hope you enjoy my little video, please like and subscribe if you want more.
    the training swords i use in this video are from Purpleheart Armory. They are awesome and affordable and if you would like some of your own please visit: www.woodenswords.com/?Click=4...

    Well done, and congratulations! That's a very impressive performance, and even more so considering that you had limited opportunity for sparring prep.
    Oddly enough if I had seen the footgage of your fighting I would have guessed maybe Persian sword fighting, so Arnis / Krabi Krabong is an interesting surprise. This also goes to show how the fundamentals are basically the same. The cuts and parries you use would not look out of place in HEMA at all. Personally I like the more general term "historical martial arts" to emcompass a variety of sword styles (and other weapons).
    It's always productive to approach different martial arts with open-minded curiosity and a willingness to learn from others, so this is great to see.

    Videos like this are slowly moving us towards a modern armed MMA and I am here for it. The only way we can know for sure which sword styles are effective against others is to test them against each other in sparring, like you have done here.
    Anytime someone on the internet says "that wouldn't work" or "that style is useless" for any reason, I say to them the same thing: pick up a sword and come show me.

      Yeah but asian martial art styles have a lot of ego attached to them and a lot wont ever spar because itll ruin their ego if they even so much as lose 1 match. Its why up until the rise of HEMA a lot got away with the "my art is so deadly i cant spar with it."
      Now that people realized you can indeed spar safely with weapons that shit doesnt fly anymore.

    The whole "escrima doesn't work" criticism is... sometimes sort of warranted. What people who say that mean is that those goofy-looking multi-slash sequences with both people staying at the same distance are absolutely useless in real fights - and they're right. On one hand, they don't realize those sequences are *drills*, meant to put movements into muscle memory and do some physical conditioning, not application of techniques. (HEMA often does something very similar if not the same, by the by)
    On the other hand, I've seen far too many escrima schools where those drills were all that was taught - if you train that way then yeah, you will get stomped into the ground at a HEMA event. This is the same problem that a lot of the Chinese martial arts have, Tai Chi is originally a military wrestling style from 17th century (if we focus on actual sources and not legends), but it sure isn't taught that way any more. At least not in most places.

    • @ConkerBirdy
      @ConkerBirdy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, i had an argument with someone a while ago who believed his partnered drilling WAS sparring and he scoffed at the idea of HEMAists having to wear protective gear for "sparring" because his view of "sparring" was just partnered drilling.

    I'm sorry but no serious scholar or primary source considers the mythical origin story of KK coming from Pahuyuth to be legitimate. It traces very openly to early XIX century and while there may be some influence of older systems the martial art as a whole was created from scratch - largely for physical betterment and entertainment purposes, which is likely why it's so good in regulated tournament context.
    Anyway - I practiced KK before I got my first experience with one-handed swords in hema (ironic, since I come from a "saber country") and it proved very useful when I tried dual sidesword for the first time - I would've never performed as well as you have in your respective category though, mad respect!

      I repeat the story as I heard it from Kru Pol. I am familiar with the criticisms of the origin story though that's why I call it reconstructionist and also why I study arnis as well because I heard modern KK owes alot to Arnis during its reconstruction. I must admit as a Buddhist I'm a bit biased to a good story about stuff coming from monks.

    • @thomastucker7317
      @thomastucker7317 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Sk0lzky Not sure how I feel about this generalisation. Competitive sports fencers will train more hours, and more of those hours will be spent actually fencing. A lot of hema clubs can only afford to run classes once or twice a week, and because of the historical aspect more time is spent fencing by the book and learning the plays and techniques alongside sparring. Obviously its anecdotal, but locally a hema club ran a sabre tournament with sports sabres and right of way rules, there was a competitive epeeist who came interstate for it. And he was really good, lightning fast footwork and tricky setups, but he still dropped matches to a few of the higher level hema guys. I think in general, your point has merit, because the talent pool for hema is smaller and the median skill level much lower. But if you matched athletes of either sport for competitive history and average training hours, that would be a much more interesting comparison

  • @Nala15-Artist
    @Nala15-Artist 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Couple of circumstances that aided in your victory: The skill level of women in HEMA is generally low because there are very few women in the sport, so anyone who just trains hard already has an advantage.
    Second, half of the footage from the tournament you've shown is showing mismatched weapons, so at least those cannot really be said to be representative of the skill your martial art taught you, rather that you had an advantage from the onset (having a shield while your opponent doesn't is frankly just not fair)
    I mean kudos to you for setting your mind to something and having an achievement, but ... this is also just very little data to go on to compare arts or the quality/historical accuracy of the arts in question, which seems to be the framing device of your video to me.
    Larpers have also used techniques to train at home that have gotten them success in HEMA tournaments. The skill level in HEMA in general is so varied it's hard to get any hard data on any situation comparing it to any other art, especially one that claims to be "unbroken" or close enough to be considered as such by its practitioners.

    Congrats! You bring up a very important point that a lot of HEMA folks are in denial about, that it's a recreation. It's not so much about the particular style of fighting, but simply that HEMA has been recreated out of books by folks who generally had no prior training, and it's really a first generation art. While I'm not familiar with Krabi Krabong, I imagine the people who are resurrecting it are mostly already highly trained in closely related principles, and have experienced coaches and experts to help them along.

    In reality most swordsmanship is comparable, most of the skills and techniques would carry over. But Hema weapons are typically better, which you used. Weapon shape forms the basics of technique, a similar weapon uses similar techniques. I beat a Kendo guy and all I ever did was stick fighting. I used basic two sword block and thrust which he wasn't prepared for. They probably wouldn't critique you if you simply used sparring footage like this. Don't do the multiple slashes garbage you showed at the beginning, I use two sticks and I would ultimately tell you just to switch out one of the cutting blades for any thrusting sword.
