Jowlagiri Man Eater by Kenneth Anderson | Audiobook (English)

  • Kenneth Douglas Anderson (1910-1974) was born in India into a family of Scottish origin, long domiciled in India. His works have been popular with generations of nature lovers for their thriller-like readability and his extensive knowledge of the jungles of South India and of the natural world in general. Much like Jim Corbett, he has left behind a legacy of a sportsman with a conscience who lived and hunted with a code of ethics.
And so, by popular demand, here's one of his earliest stories. Although no dates are mentioned, the best guess is that the events described here took place sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The Jowlagiri Reserve Forest is in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on the border with Karnataka.
The narration is only meant to serve as a tribute to Mr. Anderson's exploits and as a small introduction to his body of work because the quality of his storytelling deserves to be read and acknowledged widely.

Kenneth Anderson's writings are top notch. While Jim Corbett largely sticks to the hunt with fewer meanderings, I really like when Anderson goes off tangentially talking about other things in the jungle or relating some interesting anecdote. India is enriched to have had these two who have left behind such rich and storied cultural treasures in the form of their books. These will last if the jungles are gone.
I cannot thank you enough for doing this!

He is the Jim Corbett of the south.Worked for HAL in Bangalore.Great story teller and his son Donald followed suit until he migrated to Australia,I think. All his stories are less supported by records hence never got to be as prominent in jungle lore as Jim.But immensely mesmerizing.

Interestingly. They were both hunting man eaters around the same era. One in the North & the other in the South. He was actually born in Poona but his father got transferred to Bangalore. I literally got chills up my spine reading his books. I could literally feel myself there. His son died just a few years ago at about 90. He is referred to a lot in the books & was actually asked to continue some stories as he was on many hunts with his dad.

damn i want MORE stories like this. there ARE more on youtube but they are either AI narrated OR poorly narrated. Great Work by you as always. Like i said before these stories (original ones unknown by the public) are STILL out there. The killing of the tiger is not the main thing for me in the story. its the detective side, the fear and struggle of the villagers. the anticipation of the whole thing that embodies anderson and corbett stories. My crazy dream is to travel to Indian villages to capture the people, the victims, the lifestyle of these people AND the singular details of the particular animals and their victims that constitute these freak and rare situations.

    • @selvalore
      @selvalore  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, I think the main attraction to these stories is the backdrop of history with the accompanying ecology, geography lessons along with nature study from men who were so well versed in it.

@selvalore agreed man. YOU need to research modern day man eaters. The animals that are serial killers. not the one off killers. You have a wonderful talent for narrating. And I'm sure people would be glued to your channel if you found some modern day stories. Just the other day I read about a leopard in Bijar that's killed 14 people. The paper gives boring first names and bare bones descriptions like " a farmer was killed by a leopard in Bijar on Tuesday. the farmer was identified as Ahmed. He was working in his ginger field at 7 a.m. when the leopard attacked him." THATS THE ONLY INFO ABOUT THIS GUY AND THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED. There is SO MUCH MORE I want to know. like who was the man? what was his life like? what is his village like? did he have children? how about the landscape? etc etc etc. The BORING newspaper story has SO MUCH potential to be a spellbinding tale of danger and tragedy. anyway, keep up your good work narrating stories. You have a great channel.

A helpful fact. Why do crickets stop their din when a tiger roars in the jungle? This as solved by Anderson & other experts. Crickets don’t have ears so how do they know when a tiger roars? Answer ….. A tiger roar literally shakes every tree & bush. So it’s the sudden agitation of the bush that quietness them.

This is just fiction and full of errors. There are no hyenas in India. Apparently the writer has read some hunting books from the likes of Jim Corbett and wrote this fiction.

Hello Frank! Well first, thanks for expressing your thoughts.
Mr. Kenneth Anderson was a bonafide hunter, naturalist and writer. One of the finest from that part of the world. The only reason why he is not as well known is because of a certain Mr. Corbett whose popularity around this time already spanned continents. A lot of his kills are officially recorded and well documented. This is one of those maneater kills. This was also one of the first stories he ever penned. His style is different from Corbett and his disposition was more daring and exploratory than Mr. Corbett who, atleast in his writings, is all business and no flair.
With respect to the point about hyenas, the striped hyena is native to India. India even had Cheetah until about a 100 or so years ago before they were wiped out. Its the only country outside of African countries, to hold a stable wild lion population.
Thanks for listening and for leaving a comment. Best!

Well I've just read Mr Singh's reply. I am sure your comment was well intentioned but a little research before posting could do no harm. Thank you Mr Singh for taking the time to help expand all our knowledge. Yet again you show your class. 👍

      “striped hyena | Hyaena hyaena
Striped hyena is the only hyena species found in India. It is closely related to two other species of hyenas and the aardwolf. Hyenas in India inhabit a diversity of habitats, from dry open scrub to deciduous forests and agriculture fields. Although they can hunt down prey, hyenas are generally scavengers, feeding on domestic and wild carrion.”

This man is fake. Makes mountain out of a mole hill. Jim Corbett a true hunter and adored by crores of people.

While I don't agree with that first statement, you are well within your rights to hold a contrarian opinion.
I have always found Kenneth Anderson's writing entertaining, and insightful about Indian jungles.
      Thanks for listening!
