I've had an EcoBoost for over 5 years now and I'm sold on turbos. The low end torque is just what you want in a truck, and it's pretty dang efficient too, if I drive it appropriately.
My buddies Ecoboost had 3 turbo replacements and it kept burning oil and blue smoked at cold start. 120k miles on that truck when he sold it and bought a Toyota @@plmn93
Yes. But what about longevity? Some of us less fortunate can't trade in every 5 years before things start to go. Turbo internals under load have much more stress. They are not like a big truck diesel, designed to run at full load all day with the turbo howling.
@@jeanclaude7018 I can't speak for the Tacoma, but my 2.7 Ecoboost is indeed built like a diesel. Offset connecting rods, compacted graphite iron block, and water cooled manifolds. Yes turbos are another potential point of failure, but no more than direct injection, 8/9/10 speed transmissions, variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation, auto start stop, etc, etc. The days of simple drivetrains are long gone. Turbos can and do fail but they are not the ticking time bomb some people make them out to be. Most people never have an issue. And let's be real. If you can't afford a potential 2-3k repair down the road, you can't afford a 50-60k vehicle to begin with.
@@plmn93 The eco seems like quite the piece of engineering. I was looking at them because they seem capable of almost the same gas mileage as my old Nissan 4 cyl but triple the power. It seems unreal. There must be some wild stuff going on in there. It seems like somethings like stop/start add a lot of complexity for small gains, and these transmissions are too much. They WILL go down at some point, and it's often $5000 or more. Why can't they at least OFFER a manual option? I mean, the 5 speed in my little truck is original 1987 with 427,000 miles. I've been using that truck 30 years, and it already had 204,000 on it when I bought it in 1995 for $2500. I want to know what happened to things that last forever at a reasonable price. I can rebuild basic engines and transmissions, but this new stuff with 10 computers is another game. The vehicle can be totalled out by a big component going bad due to labor costs. You're right, I am disabled and can't afford it. Worse, it it's like some new trucks (Tundra) and you gotta pull the cab for just a turbo change, good luck doing that in your garage. It's off to the dealer to get the shaft. I was just looking for a bigger truck to occasionally tow with. I like the ecoboost because it seems to give an actual fuel mileage reward for the complexity. But I am scared of a used one with no warranty, and I feel helpless knowing I can't work on it and would have to hand it over to a shop. Maybe I'm gonna end up with a gas hog old V8 just for occasional use. I'm frustrated.

Owned a 2019 and 2023 Tacoma and I love my 2024 Off road! In fact, my son has the 2023 right now. Cannot really even compare the two generations. 4 gen is better in every way. To those that complain about the price, buy something else, the cheap Taco is no longer cheap. What is? I guess we will see at the end of the year which mid size is the best seller.
I actually agree with you.. it is what it is.. Im sure this truck will continue the reliability its known for but I do have my doubts.. the new powertrains are very very complicated. However. Toyota shot themselves in the foot with the pricing TBH...
I can’t afford any new truck I actually want anymore sadly. The last three four years has steadily increased the pricing to almost $75-80k where they are unobtainium for me and my level of income 😢
I'm with you but all hope is not lost. Pay off all your other debts except for your mortgage and save up $25,000. Then you can buy what you want! That's my plan. I also need to grow my emergency fund from 3 months to 6 months then I will work on saving for a truck. This will probably take me 5 years. Saving is the key and work your way up in your career!
@@IKnewMickey Investing is important! I'm still driving my 2010 Honda Accord that's paid off. Eventually I do want to buy a truck. The important part is saving and investing instead of signing up for a $1,000 truck payment!
So glad I bought a Nissan Pro4X after 6 months of ownership. With one of the financing deals, I paid off already, was an extra discount with a trade in. 38k for a Pro4X was good enough for me to buy the only new vehicle I will ever buy. For capability it beats the snot out of my old 96 Z71 for normal things. Almost went to a 2500hd 4x4 since they are cheaper than the 1500's. As a former Nissan master mechanic I figured they were all trash anymore because of Renault, and that also changed. My old teacher, who was a Nissan engineer, pulled a 5th wheel around to the lakes in the area at OSU in his second gen.
He has a big problem highlighting problems or negatives. I understand they have to make nice with the manufacturers but he is a glorified salesman with a video camera
The 4 cylinder turbo will need more maintenance like changing your oil and air cleaner more often, warming up and warming down yourturbo engine. The care car nut does an excellent video on this power plant and the turbo will have to be replaced down the road as well, the turbo motors run real Hot!!!!
Oil changes every 5k is a good idea. I do that on both my turbocharged engine and my NA 5.0. It’s just good practice to ensure the oil stays clean and consistent.
I own a 2022 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6 Barcelona Red made in Mexico (I bought it brand new) and I love it! I lucked out in being able to buy it (it was covid and there were no new trucks on the lots), I was at the right place at the right time. It's a great truck. No problems with it. It runs great has enough power to go on freeways, and in the city driving. It's my work horse. Best of all it fits in my garage. I can't say enough good things about my Toyota Tacoma. Personally I don't like the little turbo engine "modern" current trend on 2024 and later models. I wish I had bought a Toyota Tacoma years ago.
Given Toyota's reputation for reliability and the new 4 banger with this, it would be interesting if you kept it as the shop recovery vehicle to see how it fairs longer-term but I do understand that ties up money rather than generating it.
Hard to argue with it. No glaringly obvious negatives. If the Toyota reliability is there, it's worth the money relative to others. But only time well tell.
Glad there are still some reasonable and level headed people on YT still. Too many here go to extremes to either vilify or defend to the death anything that they love or hate.
Pricing is too high, especially with that stealership 'market adjustment'. Toyota *could* enforce markup policies, but they won't because they're making money hand over fist--why rock the cradle?
I bet it’s thanks to all the haters that I was able to grab a trd offroad premium in solar octane. There’s a ton of space in the engine bay, and they really aren’t that complicated a powertrain. Seems to be a lot of hate just because a turbo exists, and seeing how a lot of other manufacturers have all done the same, I’ll take my chance with the yota.
That's what i'm saying! Start producing a single cab, long bed, manual transmission, manual windows and roll up windows, Apple car play, bench seat, and price it at $25k and watch it sell out completely.
I think a problem folks are having is the fact that it’s new and the Tacoma was by far the best in class 3 years ago, now it’s a much more even race, every mid size truck right now is leagues better than anything made before. I have a 2nd gen fronty and it feels analogue, and “ trucky “ a lot of these newer mid sized feel more accommodating and “ car like “. My problem is people crying about the truck being under powered, what are you expecting, towing capacity of a heavy duty, leg room like a full size, power of a mustang, but the size of a mid size, and price of a 2000 ford ranger, I mean c’mon you can’t have everything, mid sized trucks have never been fast, never been able to haul a huge load, and have never had alot of leg room in the back, hell I have a half cab, and my dog barely fits back there.
Great review ! Most reviews on TH-cam are slamming the new Tacoma for being a failure. There are hardly any on the dealers lots in the Midwest where I live. How can so many "experts" know it's a failure when they most likely don't own a Toyota let alone a 2024 Tacoma ?
No one cares. These posts are dumb. No one needs to know you are keeping your old outdated trucks. It's not just you. Literally hundreds of post like this a day 😂. Too many reasons to count. Price, design, whatever who cares.
All must be forgiven and forgotten, because the big T is worshipped. Now if Nissan did that same thing, all Nissans from 1990 to Now would be proclaimed to be junk.
Maybe I missed it but I thought after breaking the Tacoma you guys said you would be going back to complete that trail with the other mid-size trucks. Very much wanted to see that. I think it’s regrettable you’re selling it already much the same as the Tundra. They’re both long-term testing worthy I think.
6K or 2 months which ever comes first. LOL I love it! Move it on. Did EVERYTHING including slapped a "canopy" on it for a sponsor and content. You got this routine down pat. So, that Tesla should be gone in July. Ohhhh wait no no, Roman said you are stuck with that for a year. Drats. That means the Ranger Raptor will be on the chopping block by the end of June. So, going to have to wait a year before you can buy maybe a Nissan product?
I bought a 2016 V6 and hated it, sold it after a year. fortunately i did not lose any money as they hold their value really well. The '16 had a narrow high revving torque band which made for a terrible daily driver, the thing would kick down too many gears and really scream and still not move the truck when needed. Plus it bounced around in my subdivsion in under 30 mph zones. My bad for not catching this during the test drive. This truck is for young men who will use it offroad.
Kase & Tommy make TFL so much more enjoyable to watch! I don't know about anyone else but watching the older guys bumble around the cars makes me sigh. If you also bring a smart beautiful woman in the mix, I bet you will get 4 Million Subscribers. Instant Smash!!!
ya, Andre seems to love to interrupt Roman, those two should not present together. Nathan does not let himself be thrown off track as much, some very cringe videos however.😄😄
Folks need to realize that a lot of new vehicles on new platforms in the first 1-2 years have growing pains, manufacturers have always had problems when you pass out thousands of vehicles that people do all sorts of things with, stuff breaks and that’s how improvements are made
Best thing for the consumer is multiple good alternatives so great that people are buying the competition. Which is why Toyota even bothered with a 4th Generation. Glad they did, all the makers will have to do the same if have not yet.
That front axle snapping was "the pop heard around the world" I can tell you what, If it was me or any schlub from the street the dealer would have denied the warranty and said it was abuse. It wasn't abuse and I'm not sold on what Toyota is doing. Right now between the insane prices and questionable reliability that's going on with Toyota I would stay far away from them. As a former Toyota fan I never thought I would say that.
It's overpriced, under powered, has unusable rear seats, cheap interior, made in Mexico and anyone who wants one should hold on to whatever they have now and if they still want one, buy a three year old truck and let the original owner eat the initial depreciation and headaches.
I always wanted a Tacoma and I was disappointed when the 6 cylinder was taken away. I waited for the release of this truck and I went with a 2023 instead.
@TFLnow: Nice work Case, appreciate the review. I am in the market for a mid-size truck and have two questions. Is the TRD Off Road with the base engine enough for light duty off-roading, fire roads, etc., or should the TRD Pro or Trail-hunter with the hybrid engine be considered? Also, After watching TFL March Truck Madness, it seems that the Ranger and Colorado/Canyon offer a better value, more payload, and higher towing capacity. I am leaning Canyon AT4. What say you?
To add insult to injury most of the center screen is useless black space.. so its even SMALLER when it turns on. Im ok with a smaller screen, it is what it is but make it look much better than all show and no go.
It's all about big, useless space now. Look at the puffed up hoods on trucks that have empty space under them. Just like the giant cars of 1958 with a mile between the bumper and radiator.
selling the blue lemon - trying to offload before *** happens is understandable but it really would be a service to keep it and document things because you have never had such a big failure so soon before this Toyota
I am not in the market for a new truck right now, but if I was going to get a midsize, I’d get a Frontier. Better to let everyone else be the Guinea pig to see if those turbos hold up over time.
Great video about this truck, the truck looks great compared to other trucks, I got the same truck because this truck performs like a great truck, if this truck was like any other truck I wouldn’t have gotten this truck. Keep in trucking my friend.
In '20 I bought 3rd gen TRD 4x4 access cab with a long bed for 29k new. No issues minus 1 recall. Reliable for 200k miles minimum. Whoever is crazy enough to pay 75% more, 4 years later, for a turbo charged 4 banger, just has the money to burn & no consideration for pressure/ wear & tear- post warranty.. No thanks. Toyota blew up its own success model in 2024.
You have tested it against the top off-road vehicles but not against the top off road Toyotas. The Toyota TRD Off Road is a mid level Tacoma. Test it against the TrailHunter and the TRD Pro when they are released and then it will be a fair comparison.
I wasn't surprised it broke right away. My 23 4runner had a bad front differential from new apparently. The first dealership kept saying that's just tire noise, basically " stop bringing it back ". I took it to another dealership later because it got worse, the second dealership said no no no. That is NOT normal. They swapped out the whole front differential at 14,500 because it was FULL of metal pieces. Tech told me it was the needle bearings imploding. My question is does this new truck still have this infamous part? Of course I won't even bother to look until they bring the prices back down some.

$8000 for a bed topper and glorified tent is a rip-off....
plus its god awful ugly.
That topper and those side bars are just ugly
You clearly don’t know the wedge camper market. Many are 14k, the GFC is a deal.
Man, I've never paid that for a whole truck!
oh you want windows with that? it'll be hundreds more. the added costs for convenience are incredible. was almost 10g's with delivery and when i selected some add-ons. not in my lifetime.
Lol sales are down 60% 😂😂😂.
I can’t afford any new truck I actually want anymore sadly. The last three four years has steadily increased the pricing to almost $75-80k where they are unobtainium for me and my level of income 😢
Just buy more money. 😊
I don't save money. I buy dividend paying stocks from top tier companies. But we're all different.
@@IKnewMickey Investing is important! I'm still driving my 2010 Honda Accord that's paid off. Eventually I do want to buy a truck. The important part is saving and investing instead of signing up for a $1,000 truck payment!
Wait the dealers out. We're in a recession so your time should come...
Case is one of the best guys in the TFL family 😎
Definitely positioned to carry the torch
Case definitely is one of the best guys agreed. Keep it going.
It’s just good practice to ensure the oil stays clean and consistent.
yep, those were what turned me off. when i get to my destination, i wanna exit asap. i'll stay with my current pre-24 taco thank you.
Great review and you’re a natural in front of the camera. I love my 24 Tacoma! I had a 22 tacoma and the 24 is a lot better.
Glad to hear you speak positive! I just purchased a 2024 and have heard nothing but negativity!
Given Toyota's reputation for reliability and the new 4 banger with this, it would be interesting if you kept it as the shop recovery vehicle to see how it fairs longer-term but I do understand that ties up money rather than generating it.
Selling already? Boy, that was a fast turnaround for a vehicle.
@@theglowcloud2215 Honestly, I have not seen a dealer around here add any mark-ups to the new Tacos yet. Seems to be more regional.
Bought my Tacoma with no mark up. Southern California longo Toyota!
I think the frontier is the best all rounder mid size on the market rn tbh. Price reliability versatility utilitarian etc.. Im a Ford owner too.
@@ScottyBennitone Toyota is more reliable; but all Japanese vehicles are reliable
@@ScottyBennitoneonly if you want more of the same.
Really think Toyota shot themselves in the foot with the pricing. In this economy people need an affordable option
I bet most of the people complaining haven’t driven one, or don’t own one. They’re only parroting things they heard on the internet.
Now… has that truck really been “off-road” since the repair, or just off the road?
Does pulling onto the shoulder count?
Great review ! Most reviews on TH-cam are slamming the new Tacoma for being a failure. There are hardly any on the dealers lots in the Midwest where I live. How can so many "experts" know it's a failure when they most likely don't own a Toyota let alone a 2024 Tacoma ?
If you don't mind the transfer case failing when lightly driving up a bunny slope it is a great vehicle
You guys should do a lot more roadtrips especially with Andrey. His videos are very entertaining.
Seems like y'all just got the Taco. Selling it soon already wow. Didn't think y'all did that many vids on it.
I think y'all are right, y'all
I ended up with a Honda Ridgeline after driving them all. A substantial difference in ride and nvh.
I will stick with my 2016 Crew Cab Taco, V6 and 6ft bed.
No one cares. These posts are dumb. No one needs to know you are keeping your old outdated trucks. It's not just you. Literally hundreds of post like this a day 😂. Too many reasons to count. Price, design, whatever who cares.
I also plan on keeping my '17 TRD Sport, V6, ext cab, 6ft bed till the wheels fall off.
Kase is always on point.
Still no way I'd buy a first model year, even a Toyota.
As you understandably move on, it would be good to try and stay in touch with/subsequent owners to track its long term reliability ✌️
That is a great idea! They had a rate my ride series for a while, this could be like that! Sell it to a TFL subscriber and follow up!
Since when did Tom Cruise start working for TFL?

Front differential breaks at what ? 3000 miles ? Made in Mexico $56,000 I'd be furious
I feel like that topper was put on there for a reason too. Lol. Likely cancelled when the Tesla suddenly and unexpectedly became available.
“4wd system performed exceeding.y well”? The front diff hard broke first time out. I wonder what you consider average performance?
TFL is a subsidiary of Toyota and the other manufacturers
6K or 2 months which ever comes first. LOL I love it! Move it on. Did EVERYTHING including slapped a "canopy" on it for a sponsor and content. You got this routine down pat. So, that Tesla should be gone in July. Ohhhh wait no no, Roman said you are stuck with that for a year. Drats. That means the Ranger Raptor will be on the chopping block by the end of June. So, going to have to wait a year before you can buy maybe a Nissan product?
Love my new gen taco, people hate without even taking it for a test drive
Did you see the video tfl made when it snapped like a twig?
I bought a 2016 V6 and hated it, sold it after a year. fortunately i did not lose any money as they hold their value really well.
The '16 had a narrow high revving torque band which made for a terrible daily driver, the thing would kick down too many gears and really scream and still not move the truck when needed. Plus it bounced around in my subdivsion in under 30 mph zones.
My bad for not catching this during the test drive.
This truck is for young men who will use it offroad.
New experience will be WHEN YOU SELL truck knowing the issue the you had with FRONT DIFFERENTIAL ADD FAILURE.
ya, they basically hammered and flogged this truck, not one that i would buy knowing the history
This is cool vid but i wanna see a 100,000 mile review. Really start to see if it’s worth it
Kase & Tommy make TFL so much more enjoyable to watch!
Nathan does not let himself be thrown off track as much, some very cringe videos however.😄😄
@@JP-jq1qx Agreed! It's just sad and getting worse to watch them forget what they're talking about more than half the time. OMFG, Lol!
Folks need to realize that a lot of new vehicles on new platforms in the first 1-2 years have growing pains, manufacturers have always had problems when you pass out thousands of vehicles that people do all sorts of things with, stuff breaks and that’s how improvements are made
A 6000 mile review? Idk the turbo scares the hell out of me in the long run.
Sir you do exceptional reviews
4-cylinder turbo charged engines weirs out much faster
Best thing for the consumer is multiple good alternatives so great that people are buying the competition. Which is why Toyota even bothered with a 4th Generation. Glad they did, all the makers will have to do the same if have not yet.
That roof spoiler looks awfully close to that GFC. I wonder how that will fare with frame/bed flex
Agree. They had "special" relationship with their dealer
It's overpriced, under powered, has unusable rear seats, cheap interior, made in Mexico and anyone who wants one should hold on to whatever they have now and if they still want one, buy a three year old truck and let the original owner eat the initial depreciation and headaches.
The previous gen was made in Mexico
What truck on the market doesn’t have issues right now?
I got a 2023 Nissan Frontier and have no plans on getting rid of it.
More power than any precious Tacoma, larger rear seat than previous Tacoma, interior is far superior than previous Tacomas. All facts so.....
@@ryansheard8092I just reviewed the rear seat on this Tacoma at the dealer and it looks likely less room than my 2013 Tacoma.
Did you test the Nissan frontier? I think the Nissan will be for me
I've owned 4 Tacomas, and I will NEVER buy a turbo or turbo hybrid. Guess I'll be looking at a NIssan, never thought I'd say that.
Great truck. Tell us about that goofy camper top.
I would love to have a V6.
They're at the Nissan dealer only. 310 hp.
Who makes the turbo? Is it a Borg warmer , Gerrett? Any idea
Hecho en Mexico, like the rest of the rig?
I am not in the market for a new truck right now, but if I was going to get a midsize, I’d get a Frontier. Better to let everyone else be the Guinea pig to see if those turbos hold up over time.
The frontier benchmarked the 3rd gen tacoma. Just fyi lol
What’s the best price you can do without the camper?

I love my GEN two 2012 Tacoma. This truck is going to outlive me my son and his children.
I hope not!

They look like Kuhl Radikl.
I can see Case (Kase?) on one of the big time channels in a couple years.
Bro, can you help me see if there is a secret space in the bottom of the centre console?
I wasn't surprised it broke right away. My 23 4runner had a bad front differential from new apparently. The first dealership kept saying that's just tire noise, basically " stop bringing it back ". I took it to another dealership later because it got worse, the second dealership said no no no. That is NOT normal. They swapped out the whole front differential at 14,500 because it was FULL of metal pieces. Tech told me it was the needle bearings imploding. My question is does this new truck still have this infamous part? Of course I won't even bother to look until they bring the prices back down some.
Had a 1986 Toy 4x4 that ate a diff in the first 15k miles. It did it again before 150k. Has much changed in 40 years?
Can’t image why I’d want that truck over my second generation Tacoma.
You didn't mention the new Ranger has a much larger back seating area than all the other mid-size pick-ups.
Yesterday i saw a new taco in the wild, that makes it number 3. Only 3 ive seen. Others havent seen ANY. im happy to see they are not selling. Id honestly be too embarassed to own one.
I disagree with the back seat comment. The back seat on the Ranger and Ridgeline is perfectly usable. There is no excuse from Toyota on this
