Especially after reading the books and understanding just how tortured Cortana was. When chief finally appeared Cortana, nearly certain it was one of the gravemind’s tricks gave in and spoke to him. When she realizes that she’s not experiencing another cruel trick she gets her glow back. Shows just how much she trusts John. Willing to give herself up to him even if it might have been an illusion.
Same. Halo 3 was my first Halo game, so my first time playing through, I was like "Blah blah blah, who cares, skip the cutscenes so I can shoot more aliens!" Now I can watch this single cutscene, and get chills.
This CE reference and the one at the end where she says “truth, the covenant, the flood, it’s finished” and instead of saying “no. I think we’re just getting started” he says “it’s finished”.... bro it gave me chills
How Cortana says “You found me.” and Chief saying “You know me…when I make a promise.” was the best part. The most emotional scene in video game history.
_"You found me."_ I get a chill from this one line. The second Cortana says this, it's like she's giving you validation for how hard you fought from that god forsaken infested hell hole High Charity just to get to her, with the Gravemind constantly trying to break you down into making you believe Cortana was getting closer and closer to her grave (which she was, by the way). And when you see her alone, lying down, pretty much ready to give up, you break open that shield, and she says that one line, and it's like release. And everything else about this scene is perfection, right to down to the cinematography, to all of that gorgeous lighting, to the perfection that is the soundtrack, from Cortana's glow illuminating Chief's visor, to the subtle little details like at 0:22 (Cortana looks as though she really wants to touch Chief's hand there, but hearing his voice gives her all the familiar comfort she needed, and getting back into his helmet is the epitome of safety in her eyes...she feels less "naked" in there with him, ironically) to the short but to the point and amazingly well written dialogue. _"You know me...when I make a promise?"_ _"You keep it. I DO know how to pick em'."_ Full circle acknowledgment of her opening monologue at the start. Honestly, this is just one of the best scenes of Halo 3, its so beautiful, so subtle, and emotional without being corny (unlike Halo 5, which was emotionally flat and hollow when it tried to do the same thing in a sense...Halo 4, on the other hand, perfectly nailed the emotional side of things by adding a lot more "meat" to its scenes with character development).
One tiny subtle detail I really appreciate that gave me goosebumps was when she was talking about how John might be too late, there was little to no glow at all. She looked really cast away, faded, even "out of place" as the lighting from her isn't what it should be. And then when she replies to John after he says "When I make a promise..." , as she replies "You keep it", her original blue glow starts radiating again, the skin animation starts coursing around her body, her spirit is still alive and it's back because of John. Showing that she is her old self again, it just gave me chills.
When the man who brought the entirety of the covenant, the man who fought through waves of flood forms and who had a major hand in shutting down the rings made by a race of gods, the man feared by multiple species...drops to his knee.
"Just keep your head down... there's two of us in here now, remember." If you didn't flip shit when you first heard this line in 2007, you missed out on some good shit.
I only started playing the MCC a month ago so I got to see the whole story and bro CE-3 are just unmatched, beautiful fucking story. Hope infinite can inspire emotions the way those games did, Halo 5 blows hard.
So amazing to see that the almighty 117 got down on his knees while he says to Cortana : You know me, but I make a promise. He Shows that he cares for her in an amazingly passive way! I love halo.
I think what's truly sweet about this scene is how dimly lit Cortana is before Chief kneels down, and after he says that, she glances up at him and begins glowing vibrantly once more.
You got it wrong. He says "you know me, when I make a promise..." and then she finish the sentence with "you keep it". He promised he'd come back for her in Halo 2 when he left her in High Charity, and she told him "don't make a girl a promise you know you can't keep", but he kept it.
I've always thought that there was something romantic about them two. Not sexual attraction, but just romantic. Two beings who were developed for combat, both human _enough_ but clearly not, and both with some sort of emotional detachment from others. They make a good pair and, I feel at least, there's an unspoken romantic attraction between the two.
Its romantic but not sexual. So not romantic in the way we see it. Its mentally romantic, they're mentally in love. Which doesn't have all the hearts and kisses we think of when we say love. Its more like a deep companionship
Poem from halo evolutions: Theirs is a connection, deeper than circuitry Beyond that of man and machine deeper still; the electric flash of synapse It is bound in destiny; fortified in trust deeper than blood greater than love Theirs is a union the “Demon” and the goddess the warrior and the intellect Built for destruction Created for war To deliver peace; through force and fire Against an enemy from beyond the stars Advanced and devout In their wake; only glass and the echoed screams of the dying Threatened by oblivion; Tested by the promise of eternity Yet they remain; these two as one Somewhere, out amongst the vast cold of the universe proper They journey forth, into the unknown This princess, of light and reason This weapon, of flesh and bone
After just beating Halo Infinite, this scene along with the Halo 2 ending of her saying THE quote. Really hits hard in the feels. Honestly if I could I would revisit 2004 and 2007 again to replay these for the first time again. Nostalgia and growing up is a bitch. Time flies but memories stay forever.
I like to think that Cortana, slowing succumbing to derangement from the torment of the Gravemind and sheer isolation, doesn't really believe John's there when she sees him. But then she hears his voice. And it's like all the hope she lost comes back as the one person in the world she trusts with her life is standing right in front of her, ready to rip her out of the worst moments of her existence.
Bungie Halo is the master of "less is more" story-telling and driving the narrative. This scene is massively impactful with just a few lines of dialogue and a few notes on the piano.
I got to meet steve downes at a con a while back. When i told him this was my favorite scene, he said it was one of his too. He signed a picture and with the words “You Know Me”. That autograph is gonna be my airloom
Cortana to me was the one character that I feel like made Chief more human through the series. She may have been a digital construct, but her attachment with John throughout the series was what I feel like made Chief grow into a human again then a machine.
This has got to be the most underrated scene in the original trilogy. Cortana's desperate broken words, the beautiful piano medley, the way the light from her construct reflects off chief's armor. I really hope infinite gives us chilling/emotional scenes like this again, or atleast a couple flashbacks.
The theme that plays here also plays in Reach whenever Halsey gives cortana to Noble 6 and it's just a beautiful connection between the two games and shows how important Cortana was for the war
The best Cortana scene in my opinion. It summarises their relationship and has reference and quote from the previous halo games. This is next to Noble six sacrifice for the Pillar of autumn.
0:08 cortana is talking, cortana motif plays. 0:23 chief comes in, and chief's motif fades in the music 0:39 the attention goes to the index of the first halo ring, the halo theme starts playing. The amount of effort that went into the direction of this game is unparalleled. Just think how much work, you need to create dialogue that perfectly times with the music, which has to be powerful enough to be one of the most emotional and memorable moments in all of gaming, while advancing the plot... This is why Halo is not art, it's more than that.
I can never watch this and not think of the horrible story of halo 5 making her a fucking villain. I can't see cortana in any game now without having that in mind. Thanks Brian Reed from 343i. You utterly destroyed a character I held dear to my heart since I was a child in 2001.
CleanserOfNoobs then again having her as the villain makes sense after what happened to her here, not only the rampancy but also the logic plague hitting her all at once, she stood no chance in keeping her sanity, hopefully they fix this shit in 6 though, and there will be a six considering they can't just leave us on a cliffhanger
in Halo 5 on legendary at the end you can hear Cortana doing this humming sing, to me it sounded like Guilty Spark used to sing like that before, so that means that Cortana is possessed by Guilty Spark or made evil clone
I personally feel that if they can get the story in Halo Infinite and possibly onward right, it might be one of the best story decisions ever made. Considering that in the end you're not only trying to save humanity from Cortana, but also saving her from herself.
dude when I first played throught this on Legendary, that "you found me" followed by the music gave me such chills after just having to fight through all those monsters to get to her.

+Joe Delaney He is in fact going to get another AI, but the new one is going to be named John. Then John tries to kill chief and will be the main enemy in 6. The games follow the books fairly well.
Fuck dude. This hits me in the feels. Chief and Cortana in Halo 1-3 makes me feel like what i imagine my wife feels when she watches some romance drama. But Halo did it without any sex or relational baggage, just a man fighting his way to save his woman.
Reminder that the spartan 4 team dedicated to containing the flood was overrun and infected. Master chief went on a 1 man assault against high charity and rescued cortana and blasted high charity to peices.
If you think about her questioning him "which of us is the machine" well it's technically Chief; he keeps going all for her or maybe I'm reading Halo 5 wrong. But for all intensive purposes she is his "soul" without her he kept running mission after mission and went rogue to try and save her.
I cried during this scene back in 2007. 9 year old me left Cortana on High Charity. 12 year old me came back for her. (They let her pick any spartan she wanted) ➡️ ”you found me”😢
I felt so relieved after completing this mission, not because of how hard is was or that I killed so much Flood and escaped High Charity yet again, but because I got Cortana out. She faced the Gravemind with confidence at the end of Halo 2. To see her as a broken mess like this crushed my soul. I can only imagine what the Gravemind put her through, so I felt just as dedicated to get her out as Chief was.
As a kid, I didn’t understand how important this moment was. Now, the simple “You found me” line gives me chills.

i will never make a girl a promise if i cant keep it...
thanks halo for so many good moments u gave me :D
I lost it when I found out the story about Cortana in Halo 5! Completely ruined my whole love of Halo if they keep this total shit plot line!
Hopefully they will retcon it with Halo 6.
I didn't know toph played video games, how do you do it since you're blind???
Still the most impactful and memorable game I have ever -blam-ing played
There's two of them in there now, remember.
We all know Chief, when he makes a promise
Halo taught me so much, if I make someone a promise I have to keep it, no matter what
0:55 Chief looks like he’s smiling and happy! 😁😁😁😁😁
If you think about her questioning him "which of us is the machine" well it's technically Chief; he keeps going all for her or maybe I'm reading Halo 5 wrong. But for all intensive purposes she is his "soul" without her he kept running mission after mission and went rogue to try and save her.
Exactamente,en eso consiste su amor.
Cortana is Chief's anima? I never thought about it like that.
To me its like hes the car shes the engine
I cried during this scene back in 2007. 9 year old me left Cortana on High Charity. 12 year old me came back for her. (They let her pick any spartan she wanted) ➡️
”you found me”😢
When you find your calculator after summer.
This scene reminded me of the chief accepting to trust the weapon in halo infinite. Both very emotional and beautiful. I almost cried in halo infinite
The voice acting here is one of the best in gaming history
Finding Cortana is like reconnecting with that old high school friend you had a crush on and she has no kids
And she’s damaged 😂
I felt so relieved after completing this mission, not because of how hard is was or that I killed so much Flood and escaped High Charity yet again, but because I got Cortana out. She faced the Gravemind with confidence at the end of Halo 2. To see her as a broken mess like this crushed my soul. I can only imagine what the Gravemind put her through, so I felt just as dedicated to get her out as Chief was.
Every time in the end of 2 I'm like no. Both go or nobody goes. Blow up high charity later
