I LOVE the Connie Hawkins pick! When most people are asked to name an all-time starting team they usually name the five best individual players at the five positions ... giving little to no consideration as to how those five players would mesh and blend their talents. I think what Dr. J did here was to actually form a "team" in his mind. I have no problem with any of the players he named on his starting five or his bench. It's his team, he can pick anyone he wants. But like I said, I LOVE the Hawkins pick. That dude could flat out ball. He got blacklisted by the NBA over his alleged association with gamblers while still at the University of Iowa. He was never charged with anything, nor was any gambling or point-shaving accusation against him ever proven. Truly, guilt by association. Sadly, Connie Hawkins is one of those players in sports whose true value will forever be tragically undervalued or worse ... unknown. The great thing about Dr. J putting the Hawk on his team is that it might convince newer fans to learn more about the wonderful legend of Connie Hawkins.

Bird isn't listed because of pride. Sad part is Bird might have listed you, even with the 42-6. Dr J undermines himself by not acknowledging his great opponents.
Cousy and Stockton, Rick Barry (moving Rick to off guard) Pistol Pete backcourt, Kevin McHale, Larry Bird, Jerry West, Dave Cowens forwards, George Mikan, Bob Petit , Bill Walton centers. Coach Red Auerbach My team is like Docs in one respect only.
1. Kareem. Unstoppable shot.. 2. Kobe ...3 Shaquille oneal...4wilt chamberlain..5 ...Jordan Because you can’t touch Jordan so he will get me a lot of points on the free throw line
The argument for Kareem as top 5 All Time best is actually quite strong. High School champion. College Champion. NBA Rookie of the Year. Six time NBA Champion. Two more as an assistant coach. That is 8 rings, Mister Jordan. Six time NBA league MVP. 11 time All Defensive Team. All Time scoring leader. All time leader in games played and minutes played. Human Rights activist. All around Nice Guy. Beloved by all his teammates and fellow NBA greats. His movies are good and successful. Best selling author. Still alive and zero scandals.
Wow, does he hate Wilt Chamberlain? Jabar doesn't have 82 records after 40 years still. They had to change the game because Wilt was such a force. He got 54 rebounds against Bill Russell's Celtics in one game. He averaged 50 ppg for one season. He had a 100 point game with the opposing team trying to stop him from getting 100. He led the NBA in assists one year. I think he had over 30 blocks in a game. He never fouled out of a game. He played the whole 48 min game usually and had incredible stamina. Players that played against him said he was the greatest, including Bill Russell who played Walt about 150 times. Rick Barry says Wilts the most dominant player. If you look at what he did in basketball, he is far and away the most dominant player. He only won two championships in part because of having 7 coaches and different teams. The Celtics may of won 20 championships if he was their center with the great coach they had and players. There are some amazing videos about him and the players that played with and against him. Most amazing athlete of the century. He did track, volleyball, water polo also. Cheers
I know it's just his opinion....but! I've heard NBA legends and people in comment sections talk about all time starting 5 , and let me tell you that MOST of these people always leave out "The big dipper" Wilt Chamberlain! I'm amazed of the lack of respect that the GREATEST center to ever play the game receives!
1st team - Bill Russell, Larry Bird, John Stockton, Magic Johnson, Connie Hawkins. 2nd team - Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Bob Lanier, Pete Maravich, Kobe Bryant. Man, I've left a lot of GREAT talent on the bench.
Larry Bird was my favorite basketball player. Everything he did was so "WELL DONE" ....Bird made plays that left me in AWE. A Sharpshooter, A Sniper, Great Passer, Clutch player, Confidence, Hustler, JUST DARN GOOD AT EVERYTHING HE DID. THANKS LARRY...YOU WERE QUITE A SHOW!!
And a GREAT teammate! He made everyone better in ways few, if any, have before. He lifted the cellar-dwelling Celtics to the division finals as a rookie and the title is second year.
Also A Celtics fan, I remember Andrew Toney giving us more than we could handle plenty of times too. I loved that late 70s - early-mid 80s Celtics vs. Sixers rivalry. I think even more than the one with the Lakers, which so may more people talk about. I mean, I HATED the Sixers. But, that's a sign of respect in sports rivalries. Everyone remembers Dr. J, Barkley, and Moses. Everyone remembers the 80s Celtics & Lakers. But Toney seems all but forgotten to those who didn't see him play.

Thank you Dr. J for not including selfish but talented players; Starting with labron. There's quite a few people that definitely would be mentioned that are team first. But great job
? I get what you're saying about selfishness in modern players in general, not having team loyalty and wanting to form tandems with other players which can fly in the face of fan loyalty. And LBJ really propelled this player empowerment with his moves to Miami, back to CLE, the L.A. But on the court? Lebron has always been a great passer. He avg. 10 apg last year, WHICH LED THE LEAGUE! If you lead the league in assists, you are pretty much, by definition, not a selfish player.
Sad that he didn’t mention Bird. . However I’m an old white guy who had some ups back in the day . My nickname became “ Doc “ . I’m proud to be nicknamed by a man who I actually meet and watched at the Hampton Coliseum when you were a Squire !! You have a place in my heart forever Sir.

the ABA in 1971, Julius Erving was eligible for the NBA draft in 1972 (as that is when his college class would have graduated and he would have been considered eligble by NBA rules at the time). He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks (where he would have teamed up with Kareem Abdul-Jabar), but instead signed with the Atlanta Hawks (where he was teamed with Pete Maravich). Dr. J attended the Hawks preseason camp and played 3 exhibition games before having to return to the Virgina Squires due to a legal injunction.
I've recently seen a lot of video about Wilt Chamberlain. He is my GOAT also. Of all the things he gets notoriety about, I think one thing gets overlooked: Chamberlain blocked shoots like no one else ever has. Yes, the rules have changed. But the thing I keep seeing in these old films is an opposing player making a strong move to the basket and Wilt coming from nowhere to stuff the shot. Wilt is a step behind, and still catches up to make the play. The man was quick, with his hands and feet. Could jump like few others ever will and was the strongest man on the floor, no matter when or where he played. He is slipping behind in the all time records over the years. But IMHO, the Stilt is still the best that ever was.
@@jaycosper8048 Kareem is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in NBA history. He also had one of the longest playing careers, which adds to his greatness. Even though he is an all time scoring leader, his longevity distorts his over all level of seasonal contributions to his team. The GOAT argument is really tough. The NBA in its history has had possibly 15 players that could have the GOAT label legitimately applied to them. The trouble is factoring out conditions like the quality of their team mates, era and especially the style of basketball in the era they played in. And additional factor is pre-1982 as to what stats were recorded for each game. I don't have Wilt stats at hand, but if he was 20 points - 15 rebounds- 8 assists- 5 blocked shots and 5 steals a game for his career, how good was he compared to the 1980's Kareem/Jordan/Magic/Bird league? Considering the lore of Wilt teaming with a punch of college players to compete with Magic and Worthy in a pick up game when Wilt was in his 50's says a lot about his game.
That's a great team! But I'd take Stockton over Magic (and I grew up a Lakers fan). It's not because I think Stockton is a better individual player, it's because I know that he'd run the team better, which is what a PG is supposed to do. Yes, of course, Magic is higher on everyone's All Time Greats list, including mine. But this is an All Time Starting 5 list, which is much different. And to me, having a pure PG whom is always going to make the right play for the team, is more important than having one who can post-up and play center. I mean, sure that could come in handy on rare occasions (and they'd be really rare with such an All-Star cast) but it's not like Stockton doesn't come with his advantages too (better at getting steals and preventing them, etc.).
Can you imagine a double center lineup with Kareem at the 4 and Wilt at the 5? With Lebron on the wing, Steph at point and Jordan at SG? The inside outside ball movement would be insane. You would have GOAT from long range, mid-range, the post, along with offense, ball movement, rebounds (offensive and defensive) and defense.
What NBA player had a Quintuple Double in a game? 53 points, 32, rebounds, 24 blocks, 14 assists, and 11 steals? The same player, after retirement at age 50, still dominated NBA all-stars in full-court pickup games. The same player that at age 36 blocked three of Kareem's sky hooks in one quarter. He's number one overall by the same margin that Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes. Wilt at center along with Elgin Baylor, LeBron James, Jerry West, and Oscar Robertson, goes undefeated against any possible team anybody else could throw out on the court.
PG: Magic SG: Jordan SF: Bird PF: Duncan C: Hakeem 2nd Team PG: Stockton SG: Kobe SF: Lebron PF: Barkley/Malone pick em C: David Robinson....This is a modern era lineup post 1980
Derek Gabrys - hard to argue against your #1 team, amazing most of these guys were part of the true dream team, circa 1992. Impossible to ever beat this team!
First team goes without saying. That second team is beast. Stockton doesn't even have to play D. Who is your last one (Barkley/Malone is the other) to round out the 12 strong?
I think many are missing the point here You can get every NBA great, Russell, Wilt,Baylor, West, Bird,Magic, and yes, Dr.J and if you asked them the same question, they likely would come up with players you disagree with. Why?, because they were players that they themselves liked, and probably liked them because they were in sync with their own game, they saw something in those players they name that struck a chord with their own game. That's why a coach in an All-Star game puts in certain players in the 4th quarter since he sees who works well together, not all the greats can work as a unit. If you had 2 guys with the same ability and style, you most likely would pick the one you are compatible with. So glad to hear him mention Connie Hawkins ( my All-Time fave) and Elgin Baylor, because he developed his style from both Hawkins and Baylor, and he was on the court against Hawkins when Hawkins was in his later years and Doc was in his early years. I can remember playing with guys in the schoolyards who i always loved to have on my side because we knew each others strengths and weaknesses, had a harmony that allowed us to play well together. RIP Connie.

It's such a difficult choice... That said, the Tower of Power, Kareem, sands alone. Won 71 consecutive basketball games on his high school team in New York City, 2 state high school championships, a national high school championship. And, of course, 6 NBA championships... Nobody else comes close to achieving what he did from start to finish!

Will Chamberlain goat hands down
I've recently seen a lot of video about Wilt Chamberlain.
It is hard to say because the players and game and players are different today.
Yes he destroyed a lot of max kellerman and skip bayless during that time with lesser nba team so therefore he is the GOAT
🤔 Kareem?
Kareem was dominant! Seen old clip of him going against wilt he was a stud for sure.
Against an old Wilt..lol
Bird, Russell, Wilt, Jordan, Magic
I like that lineup, can we have pistol Pete as the sixth man !!!!
Fun Fact: people forget Moses Malone was the first player to bypass college and go straight to league from high school
It all depends on what league you are talking about. Moses started out in the ABA not the NBA.

Dr J is my all time favorite player since his days of the ABA ( tho I never get to see him play ) and then when they merge with the NBA, that's when I really get to follow his career... So for ME, Dr J would be in my starting 5, because he IS my favorite...So yeah, it's pretty much base on one's ' favorites ' when you think about it...Cheers..
..Btw, I definitely would put Wilt in my top 5 too..
because chamberlain is just selfish. he expect the tactic to be everyone passing the ball to him, and he once nearly fought the coach because he disagreed with the tactics. i rather put russell in, because russell makes the team win championships, and chamberlain kept losing to him to the point that the final score is russell 11, chamberlain 2. chamberlain himself even said that he rather get the stats than win championships, thats a loser's attitude
Raul Jimenez yes sir look at the record books. Agreed
Bill Russell owned Chamberlain!
Dr j was at the end.of his career them. A young Dr j would dunk Larry Bird ass through the rim. The Dr J in his prime was unstoppable.
I bet I know exactly why you’re saying that. I don’t even need to see you to tell.
