@@IrinaSwat it's a hard game but it becomes much more manageable when you learn how to abuse the invincible throws and time your party. Also it's very fun with a friend
I have to do my part and pay homage to River City Ransom: Underground, one of the most fun beat-em-ups I've ever played, and I see people talk so little about it. It's got a great pixel art-style, an amazing retro soundtrack and a fun and deep combat system to master, where you pick and level up different fighters in an open-world story driven beat-em-up. Shout outs to anyone who's experienced this great game.
Any time I never know what I want to play this dude comes out with another kick-ass list! Keep up the awesome work brother because you are the indie game review guru!
For me fight n rage beats SoR by far. The battle system is so much more flexible and frantic. I'm surprised river city ransom underground didn't make the list, another underappreciated masterpiece
Im so glad you put Fight N Rage on this list. I hadent played a beatem up in a while before i found this gem a couple years ago and I no lifed it for a while. I haven't played it on switch but I own it. I will buy every version of the game i can to support Sebagames. Also the soundtrack done but 1 other guy is perfect.
Honorable mention would be Streets of Red double dare deluxe. It was a fantastic beatemgame experience with many references to other games and media, plus the journey towards the platinum trophy was quite enjoyable
Lost Castle is on sale for $4 on Steam for the rest of the week! I just picked up the deluxe edition today for $7! I have about 5 games on this list and the ones I don't are on wish till they go on sale. Great list!
As soon as I saw The Takeover I thought it looked like they wanted to model it after Streets of Rage, but with a different kind of graphics. I had to get Streets of Rage 4. I just have too many memories of playing Streets of Rage 2 with my brothers back in the day. Of course, I also have Fight N Rage, but I haven't played it enough to get good at it yet.
Phantom Breaker looks awesome, especially comb-system and pic-n-mix 10 different characters. Shame it's only 2 lanes/planes of movement to hop between though. Up to 4P is a very welcome tough however! The Friends of Ringo Ishekawa also the dev of "Fading Afternoon" is wonderful pixel art beat'em-up/life-sim/slice-of-life. The dev pours their heart into these titles and you can see the "love": It's got that combo of "ultra-violence + melancholy of life" vibe! River City Girls: Some great pixel art animation around! Castle-Crashers is probably one of the best games ever and top picks in this genre. There's so many fun ideas in it. Midnight Fight Express looks so fun and playable - The Warriors the game sorta feel. Fight N Rage looks like it's on some seriously strong stuff! Incredible look.
I really hope more Good Beat Em Ups are made over the years. Own and have played everything on the list and most everything even in the steak category. I have my eyes on one in the far distant horizon, but it could be more than decade before that one happens.
I wish I could time travel summon young me who absolutely loved beat-em-ups but could only ever play a round or two on the arcades - imagine having dozens of indie games available!!
I'd like to point out since they didn't. Charlie murder is made by Ska studio the one who made Salt and sanctuary/sacrifice and those games are quality as hell
Love your videos! Found so many great games that would have been lost if not for your videos! Thank you! Maybe one day the game I'm working on will be featured. The dream 😊
Well made video thank you I really love all the games you recommended. I wish EA made a remaster or something of "DEF Jam Fight for NY" it's such a great game...
Gotta be honest, i had one on sega and it was fun but thats it. Never really got into them but always wanted to. Gotta check some of these out. Sadly none of my friends like these games
The only beat em up game i ever liked was URBAN REIGN, the 2003 PS2 exclusive title.. Very few know this game coz it was an exclusive, i still hate that this game didn't got its 2nd part
#14 Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds looks like a fun little game. Like if Isekai Quartet or one of those rom com animes involving magical girls got the Scott Pilgrim treatment. #5 I am intrigued by Full Metal Furies. It's a beat em' up with Greek mythology, noticeable rpg elements (not just leveling up), and the gameplay actually seems different per class/character. Wonder if they'll meet up with the Full Metal Alchemist and get the Sniper some Full Metal Jackets. #2 Fight N' Rage seems a little goofy. The Female's name is Gal? To be fair, Gal is a name. Gal Gadot for example.
I tought that the genre had evolved over the decades. Except 9 monkey everything else looks still bound to mechanics 80-90s. I'd dare say, the evolution of the genre went on with the likes of DMC and Bayonetta. But I was really looking forward for something from the past with modern mechanics and visuals.
Streets of Rage 4 plays far more smoother than the previous games and has a far more advanced combat system. I'd say that's a good continuation. Many of the other games are just too retro for my liking.
Why the hell hasnt someone made an indie game version of dragon's crown. Qq. Also, I like Fight N Rage, but gal has to do like 3x the inputs per second as the other two just to do as well, then you get carpel tunnel =p
Is Fight'N Rage made by Team Ninja, or ex Team Ninja employees? Because they're certainly using Team Ninja's "physics" system in their character sprites. 🤣
@@ClemmyGames I agree that it's relevant to the revive of the genre and indie games in general, but aside from The Behemoth's iconic visual style, it has nothing going for it, most games in top 15 to 7 are better to play than it.

I am just not a fan of that art style. Im more in to pixel graphics... beatemups like mother russia bleeds or fight'n'rage. that said i rely like old streets of rage!
Fight N Rage is amazing. It is a must buy.

indeed, im playing it right now.

Fight n rage is my number one spot. It is full of surprises and the core gameplay is so fun

You must not have played much of Streets of Rage 4 then. It's far more deep, flexible and smooth.

1. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge
2. Batman Returns (SNES)
