In my region even the casual players who don't even care about rank matches play in the ranked mode because of that standard mode is like totally abandoned like 99% of the time you'll only get bots in the Standard mode. And because of that more casual players select the ranked mode and unintentionally ruin the matches for the other rank players.
Plus there's no incentive to play defenders or supporters everybody plays attackers for some reason (maybe because they want to be the protagonist like the Anime) and i hate that, it's the same repetitive stuff in every damn game.
Exactly this. started playing ranked this season purely because standards takes ages to find a match. And like you said I quickly realized where most of the playerbase had went.
Unskilled players don't understand the value of defense and support, and skilled players don't want to waste their time defending or supporting for unskilled carries that bumble around not doing anything.
Same issue here. It's so bad that rather than play Normals as a 4 stack we either try to find a fifth for Ranked or take turns sitting out to play Ranked as a Trio.
If in doubt, incentivize it in a way that rewards taking it and you get a benefit much more for winning to make it something desired.
You have someone take a defender/support when the team has none, you get extra, make it a 1-1-3 or 1-1-1-2, or whatever you see as the meta options dev wise.
People that want the rewards for its sake, will try, filter out, and go back to attacker/speedster, and those that defend/support, get ahead.
I think this game is very unfriendly to players with a high winning rate. The reason is that players with a high winning rate often match you with less than 50% of the players, and those players with a low winning rate tend to mess around. This is really frustrating. I can only say that the matching system Really sucks 😞
What threw me off about this game is not only the lack of content/repetitiveness, but the lack of people taking seriously their roles, I got kind of tired picking the filler role meanwhile attackers still play suboptimaly (back caps, overextending ecc...). yes, you can pick a carry, but having a team of 2 all rounders and three attackers isn't very appealing.
Also why is trio queuing is still allowed in the solo ladder?

Pokémon attracts a casual crowd that believes "there's no wrong way to play a game". In a team-centered game like MOBAs, there is ABSOLUTELY a wrong way to play the game, and the developers have done a *terrible* job showing people how not to play.
As solo q player only, I play only for 1600, but seriously there is no reward or stuff to show as reward for grind or skill in unite, and thats turn off for me
Its so dumb that rewards get worse the harder they are to obtain.
Used to give skins at 1600 but they removed it cause they can't make money with it.

I think Unite should try to make Standard mode actually appealing to play, it’s just collecting dust. If you make ranked mode more competitive/less broad in appeal, then Standard mode should be there to pick up the one-trick players, the casual players, or the ones who want to trio q or test troll builds.
Maybe designing more unique/fun maps that rotate in Standard and giving out rewards or holding events based around Standard mode instead of emphasising ranked would be one possible start. I think revamping Standard mode has a lot of potential to invite more players.
Literally that scenario happened to me today when I was drafted agaisnt a player who only plays Zera, and I stole his pokemon so he could play something else and he never played and the enemy team surrendered most likely because he wasn't in the game anymore. It's ridiculous how some people can't learn to adapt.

Nah the matchmaking is particularly a muchhhhhh bigger problem in this game. In league to get the highest rank you need to be top 100 in your region. In unite you can be a head banging Neanderthal. That’s a huge difference and huge factor

I new to unite, if i play a new game i habitually learn its core mechanics before i really play rank. Learning from yt content like (inder, spargels, unite climbin etc.). I agree with inder that there are more players that have no idea how held items or at least the macro game. I'm still in veteran (still so much to learn, understand and still poor skill wise. I'm in no rush to go to master). I try to flex to (defender/support) but its frustrating that there are more players higher than me that have 0 idea on how the game progress (Lane cinder ace with exp share and sp items)that are higher than me.
I agree with cross platform promotion it would be fun they could do like if u catch 50 scyther in Pokemon u get discount in unite license or smth similar
Great video and that was the best part. Make it like the shiny Zerora event in Sword/Shield. Beat Ceruledge enough times and it's free for all players. Give it bonus herba drops or heightened shiny rates to draw in people who don't care (at least currently) about Unite.
I think they should add some game stats in deciding the rank of a player (their value)..not just the rank points or games played..
It's quite hard to implement tho...
about emblems, would be great to have kinda of a STAB dynamic for the emblems. electric types with yellow emblems getting extra speed, fairies with pink getting more hindrance resistance, etc
emblems shouldnt have negative numbers it should boost only the stats.

So many great opinions from all of you. Thank you for your insights! Loved your thoughts on incorporating new players from other Pokemon games. What a creative idea! I hope somebody from the Pokemon corp hears that. Seriously a fantastic idea.
Its easy. There is NO incensive to play better, to develop your gameplay and to do better in matches. It ALSO does NOT punish you if you troll or make bad plays (wrong picks, bad held items etc). These two things combined is something that got me to quit playing. I get to masters every season, for what? Nothing. The players who troll and make bad plays also get to masters so why should I be bothered to actually try?
I can't wait to see the Phil reacts to this and then the teeds reacts to that vid

I'd love a new ranked map, maybe with a switchover to 15 minute games later this year?
Then its ~20 minutes with queue and draft times.
The occasional new held item would be great, 1-2 a year? The occasional up-tweak to under-used items, like drain crown.
A new battle item would shake it up too.
We NEED more runes. You can't build even build 7 gray.... & the negatives pidgey-hole your choices. A rework would be great, but just adding more would hardly take any person-hours, and would expand our build options immensely.
I'd like to see 6-8 mons a year, with maybe 1 EX, & better balance patching post-release.
I think recent changes have been great. Overall Meta balance is as good as I've seen since joining during Mew2Y.
I'm watching Draft change the way people pick for the better, and bans are buffering the game's balance issues sufficiently.

The length of time it takes to draft is only noticeable to me when the game is surrendered at 9 min because one of the players crash out. At that point I am soooo frustrated to have spent all that time and decision making for NOTHING. I swear it's about 1 in 5 draft matches. They must make draft very stable for it to be successful.

I think another annoying thing that kills pokemon unite for less competitive is people not wanting to play support or tank, that still happens well into masters btw.
Like everyone just wants to pick DPS no matter what so if they don't have the role they get angsty or just literally suck at any other role. Maybe they could make support a bit more interesting, well defenders are fun to play but no one seems to think the same for some weird reason. I do think that the game could have an actual "meta" advanced training were you are shown how you are "expected" to play each role, specially for Junglers and Defenders and give a 1 free unlock of each for each one they complete.
I totally agree that draft is ultimatedly not a bad thing at all, even if it affects the "meta" I think it healthy being able to ban mons that are heavily disruptive to your possible team comp so if someone wants to pick a "meta" mon and gets shafted sorry dude but better learn to play more stuff.
There should be some kind of incentive for people playing at least 3 diff roles in unite. Probably give diminishing returns if you keep playing attacker or Balanced mons.
Also as a casual player I HATE the medal system, It would be nice if it was just some kind of skill tree and medals are to equip and enhance stuff or something, not literally a huge pokedex where 80% of medals are kinda underperforming or have huge negatives.
I do like the game but all these caveats are disheartening because it does kind of accumulate.
Also I do agree the PR for Unite is atrocious. I mean, it's always have been that way PR for pokemon side games since a while ago, pokemon have a loooooot of side games currently running yet they do 0 PR because they think "hey it's pokemon people will search and find them ig" and that was really showing in the DS/3DS era were they started to do a lot of side games with barely any publicity aside from official nintendo magazines.
Lately i feel i get 1 of 2 solo q games:
- a bad game where the team spam pings, surrenders, afks, permapushes pads and dies, ults at 2:20, backcaps and we lose
- a similarly bad game, pings and surrenders all game, but my team manages to steal Ray and barely win
Both just feel so awful and frustrating I usually wanna log out right away.

I can't stress this enough, but in the Philippines Official Pokemon Tournament, only the two teams that already reached International. Those are the only team that was "Interesting" and felt "Competitive" and felt "Serious".
Which is funny, because almost everyone in the competition is nearly 2-3 years in Pokemon Unite. And only 2 teams that only gets to play, nearly clowning the rest of the "Play4fun Teams".
It's probably because winrates doesn't matter as much in this game since ranked difference barely matter or barely signified by the game's Match making. Etc.
They really should make the out of combat effects not go on cooldown when fighting wild pokemon and change the it to take 3sec instead of 5sec to activate

What you said about the player base missing fundamentals is exactly why I stopped playing. Or just the outright troll/afk. My block list was filled with them.
Need new battle items , new ranked ladder , new emblems , new actual clothes for character. I actually think they are releasing too many mons id rather them focus on those aspects. Expensive ass holowear ain't gone cut it.
I feel like this hasn’t been addressed, but there should be a required tutorial on how to use the draft mechanics & how items work.
Pair that with a better (more spread out) ranked system and it should truly funnel players into being more effective teammates.
Just a few tiny additions would drastically change the landscape and enjoyment of the game.

We should have 2 modes one for draft ranked and the ones who don't want draft should play in standard mode with their own ladder. This way standard game will also see more play.
They can also rotate the wild Pokémon with new additions from other gens. That would be also nice.

I think the draft is fine but you should be able to pick your lane from the matchmaking, so the pick order would not be much of an issue, since everyone in the draft knows their role
I know its a really subjetive opinion but i think draft its a good thing for the game because it will separate the casual players from the ones who take it more seriously, after all, we have a big Standard Match button that is barely pressed.
I play a lot less these days. Not even so much that the draft is bad, but the lull of chugging through mid 1400 ELO and not feel motivated to climb both contribute to the boredom. I don't care for that 1600 sticker anymore. Got Season 18, but 19 is whatever. 20 will be whatever. Need something fresh, but none of these stupid 1-2 broken Pokemon metas.
A better solution than what indie suggests is to add more ranks. You can get stuck at ultra by getting matched with 50% win rate players.
This is the first time in almost 3 years of playing where if I lose, but have competent teammates, I feel happier than struggling for a win.

may be talking by myself but real issue's organic unite player-base consists of pokemon fans, people whom just come in lacking any MOBA experience to play their favorite mon & some stayed for the fun, but we're still some years far from having a decent skill leveled base. its frustrating, but content creators may still have a niche on the educational take for now imo
Na draft is a problem and it not that the worse players quit it the middle players have quit and now you have good and really bad players in the game.
Draft problem is if you first pick and you go center with hyper carry, you now can't be the defender or support your team needed. So there rest also pick hyper carry and the enemy team has an amazing draft comp. Now what is the point in playing?
I think there are also more content creators so I'm sure people disperse, and that includes myself. 😅 And a I think you hit the nail in the head with players behaviours and choices, ray flipping etc
Honestly though, the content drought is entirely because they are trying to not change too much while competitive tournaments are going on. I think we would get more content once worlds passes personally
I feel there should be a TDM mode where you just kill and kill and die and respawn and just roam around the map like everyone for himself.
The ranked system was doomed from the beginning, everyone get easily achieve the highest rank.
Energy system failed and abandoned, same with fashion and holowear tickets.
The BP and holowears in general are pretty bad and very expensive.
We havent got a map or emblems in forever.
The communication options for teams is also very limited without vc.
They release unbalanced characters and make awful patches 8 out of 10 times, not to mention the EX saga which in itself is rediculous.
Its not skill based enough, the characters are too easy to play even for noobs.
If Rocket league can do it in 5min Unite can do it within 10min.
Its rediculous, also the nintendo switch device is just a shitter, and phone is just not what the gamers want.
At this point the best thing to do a do over globally relaunch with the chinese version and transfer peoples old achievement and everything to the new one except for their WR.
The company dont tell us anything even tho the player base and content creators are begging for it.
Draft havent been good and came way to late, then made another bad decissions and give the worst players bans.
They dont give us battle items or held items pretty much ever, tho their a lot of VGC items begging to be added in some way.

For me it died with the zacian comfey meta. It destroyed any idea of fun and replaced it with depression.
honestly, veteran players don't understand how bad unite is for new players. with this ranking systems new players have to play 20/30 bot gamea before reaching real people where they stomp ai and get bored. most of my friends that played unite know it as the easy game where you always win.
one time i played with one of them and he was playing fulll special attack items on mimikyu, and he said "it doesn't matter i never lost"

I think more people should speak during games to help players who need it. Not shout and cuss like some do. Pokemon is such a huge deal in the world its very strange that a moba that represents Ash's determination to become a pokemon master has these struggles, the other pokemon games im aware of seem to be doing well although i dont play them just from glancing it looks that way.
I used to play pokemon on my gameboy at school, i dreamed that one day i could play a game that allowed me to use the pokemon like this, i hadnt played anything to do with pokemon since until i played this game, will be a real shame to see it keep losing like this. as Spragels really emphasized, the big big thing is just a current Content Drought; however, the problem is twofold and deep rooted. A: Theres not much content right now and the game needs some spice, but also B: . . . Still absolutely no incentive within game to learn and improve. Why flex to fit your team, do your best to adapt + grow and consistently strive to push your limits as a player when your reward is to be placed as The Designated Carry (whether you actually play them or not) of stressful one sided games with players that dont even honestly deserve the win at least 40% of the time? or be placed on the other side of that, stomp all game, but then your team overextends right before final objective and its all over. Good players will still attempt to do this and anyone reading should still do their best too, but when the game doesnt actually reward you for any of this its just not worth the investment
I stopped playing recently, and the main reason is that the game feels more frustrating to play than enjoyable. When you take a step back it's plain to see that the 10% of fun isn't worth the 90% of pain (10% is generous btw). Watch any streamer play this game and you'll see that that is their experience too.
What I believe to be the main cause of this frustration, and what I've been saying is the biggest problem with this game for literally years at this point, is matchmaking. The skill variance in master rank is absurd.
There is little to nothing to grind for anymore, and even if there was, I'm just not interested until matchmaking gets addressed, but I doubt it ever will.
Unite is an objectively bad game. And if it wasn't for the Pokemon IP, none of us would still be playing it.

The game tries to appeal to opposing audiences (serious vs casual) because there is not enough player base which is already a really bad sign. The two types of players just don't mix which creates a toxic environment so serious players don't stay. its going to keep declining till it stagnates
Best Pokemon to buy in current season?
10:30 is precisely why I've given up on Unite. Having to play with those players at least 90% of the time makes the game not fun to play, for over 90% of the time. The 10% or less of actual fun, rewarding gameplay simply isn't worth the 90% of frustration anymore. And you can tell that this is the experience of people like Cris when he streams. If it wasn't his livlihood, I'm quite sure that he would barely play Unite at all.
The fact that these clueless players are everywhere at the highest rank of the game shows how flawed the ranked/matchmaking system is. Objectively bad players with no game sense or idea of micro vs macro, who have just been mashing the A button for over 10,000 matches should not be able to reach the highest rank. Until matchmaking (which I have said is Unite's biggest issue for years) gets addressed, I have no interest in playing this game long term anymore. Unite feels like a Beta that will never reach it's full potential because all the obvious flaws are ignored. The best case scenario we can hope for at this point is that the Chinese version is going to be a complete rework of our version, and that the global version will then adopt those improvements.

I don’t think the game is dying but I totally agree it isn’t growing. Don’t play the game everyday anymore and when other cooler stuff is out I’m playing that. Elden Ring DLC hype man.

Dev priority list
1. More content. Always needed.
2. Create a true ranked experience with good rewards and a real ladder to keep players around longer.
3. Fix matchmaking. It's just horrible.
4. Reduce CC. Part of what makes these games not fun for people is that they get stunned by multiple enemies and dont know how to combat it.
5. Better marketing and communication in the US/Europe.
Well I have bad news, I've been playing genshin and hsr for 2 years now and I've seen the Chinese devs cater to one side (China) and absolutely ignore everyone outside of China. I'm bringing this up cause I was not aware of this Chinese pokemon unite thing. Neglect is in full effect here and I'm not expecting anything now. The whole catering to one side and saying f you to everyone one else, it all makes sense now. Guess you'd have to be a genshin player to understand this

My (very biased) opinion is that this will make for a worse experience in Unite, at least temporarily. More *Pokémon* fans means more clueless players who're just in it for the franchise
