Heartwood Saunas - Our Story

  • Heartwood Saunas' Founder, Oliver Davey, grew up surrounded by woodland in the heart of Wales. Combining his passion for an outdoor lifestyle and his craft, he hand-built his first outdoor sauna from a design he had imagined.
    Our saunas, outdoor showers and plunge pools are all designed and made in our workshop in a beautiful, sustainable, and privately managed forest on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, where most of the wood used to craft our saunas is grown.
    Nowadays our team is a little bigger, and so are our premises, but each of our saunas is still hand-crafted; made with care by a small team of skilled craftsmen. Their attention to detail, from overseeing the first felled tree to fitting the final fixings, makes a Heartwood Sauna.

    Not only do these look absolutely stunning, the work that goes into these, and even the video. Sat here feeling like I just watched a short film! Bravo all involved.

    As a Finnish-American that grew up taking saunas, these designs are the stuff of dreams. Also, to be in Wales....i WISH.

      Your goal is to buy a Sauna starting, for a basic model, at well over 30K £?

    Here in Southwest Virginia I'm planning on building a wood-burning sauna, I may use an old fireplace that must weigh 400 lb and build Granite Rock cage around it all done homegrown materials. We have great Hardwoods, red and white oak, Locust, cherry and black walnut species as well as the softwoods like red and white Cedar. Inspiring!

    Hello from Finland - really admire the way you're communicating your way of respecting traditions of sauna culture, yet making it interesting in a modern way. It's amazing to see the real essence of what saunas are in your work, just like we do in Finland! :)

    Great workmanship. Well done. Nice to see, also the situation of your own sauna next to that great river! Love it:) What would I give to have that river and lovely sauna in my back yard? Hmmm?

    Beautiful, but 40,000-50,000+ pounds is too expensive for most buyers. 😢

    The workmanship here is very inspiring. The settings too. Great film! Is there a reason that you choose HUUM wood heaters other than the looks? I know some of the popular wood heaters including Harvia are poorly made and have a short lifespan. I haven't seen anyone talking about these HUUM heaters to find out if they are any good and if they have a lasting service life. The Kuuma stove from the USA has the smallest unit weighing 170kgs without stones, very efficient and will last for 20+ years of daily use. But the stone mass is minimal. I worry about a stove like the HUUM that weighs only 56kg. Thinking it has a thin fire box to be replaced after a few years. Looking to learn more about the efficiency and durability of these high stone volume wood heaters. I am more about function and durability over fashion. The HUUM stoves are available here in Canada. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • @flynnjp19

    I'm planning to design and make my own sauna wood stove and I notice a huge volume of stones used in these stoves, it seems the more stones, the longer the heat lasts? Using less firewood perhaps?

    • @matikaevur6299
      @matikaevur6299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More stones means more stable temperature, and definitely means more firewood - you have more mass to heat up! But if you have room for stove and firewood available, i'd recommend bigger stove. Takes longer to heat up.
      There are probably good calculations available what's optimal for given volume of hot room.

    • @hineko_
      @hineko_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general there are 3 main aspects of using stones:
      1) As a thermal mass,
      2) to spread heat more evenly because sitting in front of a point source of intense heat is not pleasant,
      3) to produce steam
      Thermal mass is needed because there's air ventilation going on all the time, also to heat air back fast when somebody walks in or out of the room.
